This is truly depressing

This is quoted exactly from the information insert that came with my new prescription for my diet drug.

QUOTE

[U\} What is XENICAL[u\]

Xenical is an oral prescription weight loss medication used to help obese people lose weight and keep this weight off....

Following one year of treatment, XENICAL in combination with diet was shown to be more effective in reducing weight than diet alone. In most cases, weight loss was gradual. Patients treated with XENICAL and a rediced-calorie diet for one year lost and average of 13.4 pounds while those on a reduced-calorie diet alone lost 5.8 pounds.

Now, tell me--does 13.4 lbs sound anything like "obese" to you? Here's Webster's definition: "excessively fat."

According to my Mosby's medical dictionary, "obese" is 40% above proper weight. This means that a person who should be around 150 lbs instead weighs 200 lbs. That would take 4 years to do this the drug assisted/medically safe way.

This is truly hopeless.

well I found, for me, somthing that works and her is my secrete and what I did.... tho I'm not on the diet anymore and need to get back on it again...

here it is.....

1) Stop drinking POP, anything with carbination... I lost 10# in 2 weeks just by not drinking pop...(BTW I hadn't changed any other eating habits at this point)

2) Eat Breakfast, anything from toast to full blown buffet.. I found that eating breakfast caused me to not eat as much at lunch and dinner...

By doing these 2 steps I lost 30 more # in 3 months and ate everything and anything that I wanted..

The hardest part is to get started and the first month is the hardest but it works..... if you stick with it....

replace the Pop with Juice and water...... and eat high fiber cerial when you can...

It gets more bleak.

Effects on weight regain:

Three studies were designed to evaluate the effects of XENICAL compared to placebo in reducing weight regain...
In (the first) study, patients treated with placebo regained 52% of the weight they had previously lost while patients treated with XENICAL regained 26%...
In (the second) study, patients treated with palcebo regained 63%...and with Xenical regained 35%...

Damn. Damndamndamn.

Thank you NS.

I already rarely drink soda--it is off my dietary restrictions for a separate problem. I am a water drinker (or herbal tea or broth).

The breakfast idea helps some people, others it backfires. I am the kind who can't stop once I get started. If I don't eat, I am fine. Once I begin though, I crave nonstop. And beginning my day with heavy carbs (bagel, cereal, etc), makes me sluggish.

A few other Ideas that might be good.

Eat what you normaly eat but try to eat 1/4 to 1/3 less of it. Just reduce the volume that you eat, but still eat all the same stuff.

Do very light exercise. Just walking 30 min a day will knock a lot of fat off. You don't need anything more then that to start off with. Swimming for 30 min a day would be better if you can.

Statistically, the advice that has been described above is effective for people who have a little bit to lose. (10-20 lbs)

For people who are "morbidly obese" there is only one treatment that is proven effective. And it has a 60-80% "success" rate.

For people, such as myself, who are 100 lbs or more overweight, dieting and all those "tricks" are well learned. The statistics show diets to be 2% effective. This means that if you take 100 people who are 100 lbs overweight and put them all on diets, in 5 years, you will have only 2 who are at a recognized healthy weight.

PC, I am not setting myself up to fail. I have already proven myself to be such a failure. Now I am trying to do whatever it takes and my insurance company is making me just through the hoops by dictating what I must do to qualify for the only proven treatment.

BTW, the prescription cost $118.99 for a 30 day supply. Obviously, the success rate of this drug is based on the ability to afford groceries.

This is truly hopeless.

It's only hopeless if you think it's hopeless.

It probably took you more than four years to put on the extra weight. It's not realistic to expect that it will come off any faster.

If I don't eat, I am fine. Once I begin though, I crave nonstop.

Learning to change your eating habits will do more in the long run than the medication will. I suspect the reason you binge when you do eat is because you go too long between meals. You need to force yourself to eat three or four small meals a day until they become habit.

Breakfast does NOT have to include carb-heavy foods. A stick of Jerky or a Slim Jim (tm) will serve to curb the appetite throughout the day as well as a Pop Tart(tm) or bowl of Cereal would.

Your mention of "crave nonstop" makes me wonder if your weight problem may have more to do with your mind than your metabolism. Hypnosis or therapy might do more than XENICAL(tm)

Unreg-

That was my way of saying that probably the most important thing you need to have is a positive mental attitude. Listen to Weird Harold and the other's advice, and forget the statistics.

Although I have successfully lost weight when I've set out to do so, I'm not an expert on dieting. I just believe that no matter what you are attempting to do, if you have the mindset that it's hopeless before you even try, you are ultimately doomed to failure.

A good mental attitude and good will power can overcome many things. Fuck statistics. If you can set your mind to it and just give it all you got you can lose the weight. Losing the weight may take a long time but it still can be done and losing weight slowly is better anyway. There is less a chance of gaining it back if you lose weight slowly and gradually.

Finally something I am equipped to post about... I've been talking shit up til now... LOL ... I have a diploma in this shit and have done diets for competitive rugby players.

Unregistered first figure out what you eat in a daily basis. Then take the same amount of food and split it into 6-8 seperate meals. Eat small and often and you will kick start and stimulate your metabolism. Make sure that any major exercise you do is before your first meal of the day as that is the best time for fat mobilisation. In other words you will be burning fat.

Increase your exercise regimine. That doesn't mean you have to join a gym but get out and do some walking... not a leisurely stroll, actually pound that pavement.

One more thing... PC hit on a real stumbling block. You have obviously paid good money for this Xenical... give it the chance to show ther results you were hoping for. you have to believe in what you are trying to do otherwise you may as well go out and buy yourself a box of donuts and give up.

Good luck.

In the long run, in my opinion, medications aren't particularly helpful for those of us who are emotional eaters. You said yourself that once you start, you can't stop. That's an emotional control, not a physical one. Unless you change your habits, even once you lose weight, it's just going to pile back on, because you're going to go back to doing what got it there in the first place. (If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got.)

Give the pills a chance, like everyone says. If it doesn't work (and even if it does), don't get discouraged. There's a fabulous support site at www.dwlz.com ..they have a message board system and let me tell you, if you're looking for support, that's the place to go. Most of the people are on Weight Watchers, but they welcome people on any program, or not even on a program. There are people there who have lost 100+ pounds and are keeping it off. But it comes down to changing your living habits.

It's hard - take it from someone who's in the process right now - but it's so worth it in the long run, because even if you're not doing as well as you should, you're still doing things for the better.

I wish you the best of luck...I know it's a tough battle. Feel free to PM if you need to talk.

How the hell did you let yourself get so fucking fat to begin with?

That's beside the point. The real point is how do you type whilst drooling all over your keyboard, and how do you finish a post when you have to stop and sniff your finger every time you scratch your bunghole? Also relevant, do you miss the stain on the mattress that constituted the majority of your IQ? You know, the part that your dad squirted on you mom's leg when he was fucking her in the hyena cage at the zoo? You remember good old dad don't you? Yeah, he was the one with the hunchback and the halitosis that could kill a sperm whale at six hundred yards. Of course his breath always got better after he finished off that quart of Old Granddad every night in the gutter behind the methadone clinic. Dear old dad...how is his leprosy anyway?

Not bad, not bad at all, PC. I think you covered all the options. I'm grinning any way

Since you seem to have a sense of humor about weight loss, maybe this edition of my daily joke mailer will help you retain your perspective:

A Dieter's Psalm

Strict is my diet. I must not want.

It maketh me to lie down at night hungry.

It leadeth me past the confectioners.

It trieth my willpower.

It leadeth me in the paths of alteration for my figure's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the aisles of the pastry department, I will buy no sweet rolls for they are fattening.

The cakes and the pies, they tempt me.

Before me is a table set with green beans and lettuce.

I filleth my stomach with liquids, My day's quota runneth over.

Surely calorie and weight charts will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the fear of scales forever.

Hi.
I used to have non-stop cravings too, even though I was doing what everyone suggests - eating a high-fiber cereal for breakfast, avoiding pop etc.

I tried various kinds of exercise, but at 5' tall and 200 pounds, it was painful and difficult to do much of anything.

I found a book called the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet and I tried that. That was in August 2000. So far I've lost 55 pounds using their method and I don't feel deprived at all. After about the first 2-3 weeks all my cravings went away too. Now if I crave something, I can trace it directly back to eating too many carbs the day before. That helps me combat it.

I feel a million times better and I've gone from a size 18 to a size 12!

I didn't have to buy any expensive drugs to do it either. It might work for you, if you think you're a carb addict...

Wise words

From "Meatloaf" nonetheless. (Talk about appropriate nicknames)

Put the fork down.

Seriously, it took years to put on so why expect it to drop off like ice melting in the Sahara.

3,500 calories equals one pound of fat ona human body. If you take in just 3,500 calories per year above what you expend then that is a net gain of one pound per year. Pretty fine line to toe I would say.

Fast off means fast on. Diets are inherently designed to fail because you stop following them when you reach your target. True maintenence involves a lifetime change in habits.

Eat healthier foods and in moderation and exercise more.

No big secret....but it is difficult when faced with "supersizing it".

Sitting here at the computer doesn't make it any easier. *looking at expanding waistline* I sooo hate winter.

Weird Harold...Great prayer.:D

I prefer natural ways to lose weight than drugs. Yes some would disagree with me saying obesity is extremely serious. I agree.
If you can find a natrual way of losing weight then to me it makes more sense.

1. I think attitude is extremely important. You have to want to lose weight and remain positive about yourself. You are doing the right and healthy thing for you.

2. Find what works for you. Yo yo dieting, crash diets etc are bad news. Research a drug/ recommended diet etc. What are people saying about this diet? (BTW I dislike the word diet. I prefer a change in lifestyle to a healthieer waf of living)

3. Most drugs have side affects. Is it worth taking this drug?

4. There are a lot of support groups available where you can talk to people who will listen to you. Sharing how you feel about your eating habits, losing weight, food issues etc.

(Overeater's anonymous is one I know of. And you don't have to be overweight to be an overeater. They have anorexics, builimics, compulsive eaters etc)

Exercise is a great way to lose weight. Especally swimming and walking. Talk to your doctor about being sent to a dietitician for good health tips and finding support networks. Find a walking partner who wants to lose weight and encourage each other. DO NOT skip meals! From the little I know 6 small meals a day consisting of health foods and drinking at least 6 glasses of water a day is the best way to go. I
I also found that if I drank a combination of cider vinegar, crushed raw garlic and manuka honey not only helped me lose a little bit of weight, slowly is the best way to go. That I was hardly ever sick since the garlic is a natural antibiotic. (PM me if you want the quantities etc for this drink) It helps to naturally speed up your meatabolism. You obviously have access to a computer, so you could do some research on natural ways to lose weight and online bulletin/message boards.

Unregistered if you are stil reading this threa. Be positive, a positive attitude goes a long way in life. Visualise yourself at a good healthy weight for you and do something everyday towards your goal. There has been some great advice in this thread. :) Good luck to you
