I served in Nam with a Master Chief Petty Officer who observed on more than one occasion:

Box you didn't mention that this is a military cadet college. Could it possibly be that the college head is doing some wholesale recruiting for the Taliban? A substantial "kidnapping" occurred at this same college some seven years ago.

Given that the upper echelons of the Pakistani Army is very sympathetic to the Taliban all may not be quite what it first appears. The way the devious so in so's in Pakistan think this will give them an excuse to back off the fighting.

I spent a few months in Pakistan a few years back and reckon you could count the number of trustworthy Pakistanis on Abu Hamza's fingers.

On the other hand it might be genuine.

I didn't mention much of anything, preferring to let the news item speak for itself. I don't know the ages of the boys involved, except that they were "teenagers" which is quite a long spread of maturity. The abductors knew about the caravan, so they must have been tipped off by somebody at the college.

I also understand that many, maybe all of the victims have been rescued. None of these possibilities mitigates the actions at all.
