False rape prosecutions are extremely rare – over a 17 month period in 2011 and 2012, there were only 35 - compared to 5,651 rape prosecutions.

But they are still incredibly serious.

False rape allegations can have devastating consequences for the accused, whether severe mental anguish, or the very tangible results of losing employment, family and relationships.

“No man should have to go through what I’ve had to,” Economou told the Daily Mail about his experience.

“It shakes your trust in people. I’m worried about my future and the fact that there are people who might still say ‘there is no smoke without fire’.

Although cases of false allegations are rare, they devastate lives.”
