"THINK BLACK"

About 45 people showed up at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Georgetown last Friday. That's where former Black Entertainment Television commentator Tavis Smiley appeared to promote his latest book, "How to Make Black America Better."

Just what did his mostly-black audience learn about Tavis Smiley?

When he goes to sleep at night, he asks himself, "What did I do to help black America today?"

"Black man kills a white man, he gets executed, especially in Texas. White man kills a black man, we have riots, like in Cincinnati."

He thinks Republicans are "determined at all costs to turn back the clock on the progress we've made." He later described black conservatives as "self-hating" and "disturbed."

On being black: "Every black person should think black first all the time."

Now let's pause for a minute to think what would have happened if a white author had said "every white person should think white first all the time." Or if he asked himself, "What did I do to help white America today?" There wouldn't just be a few dozen onlookers. There'd also be a couple hundred protesters accusing him of racism!

Yet it's somehow okay for Tavis Smiley to rip into conservatives, imply that black conservatives are sellouts, and instruct his followers to "think black" all the time. What a politically protected class black Democrats have become.

I agree that thinking in terms of race promotes racial diviseness, to a point. But, Todd, do you really think it would be the same for a white person to promote the same message? Do you see anything different in the histories of the two races that would lead to the contention that black people need to be conscious of their race? Have you ever stepped into a room, and been the only white person there?

Yes several times while doing works in New York in Harlem and Brooklin

However, in the whole grand scheme of things, I think we should consider ourselves citizens of the global community and members of the human race first and foremost.

Didn't you use this speech when you were in the miss America pageant?

*Gag*

I played the organ and piano for a gospel baptist church for a year.

You were in a baptist church and didn't melt, ih my  ;)

Lavy-

You really do need to work on the humor thing. I'm not cynical at all, or indignant or callous. Well, maybe a little callous.

I'm also not sickeningly trite.

Now tell me Todd. How many whites have been hanged this century for simply being white? Get a grip young man, there's some history behind black attitudes toward mistreatment by whites. If blacks don't think about themselves, stand for themselves, there are few white who will stand for them...some, but not many. And you'll be hard pressed to find many defenders of injustice towards blacks among your conservative bretheren. More often they're closeted bigots who hide their views because they're no longer so easily indulged without criticism.

Now, Miss Mischka, what would you most like to see happen in the future?
When I become Ruler of the Universe (that's the point of the Miss Universe contest, right?), the first thing I'd do is ban all neutral car colors. Tan, in all its bland shades, contributes to the downward spiral of our society. If we have to spend as much time as we do in cars, then I want to be surrounded by vivid colors.

That's right GB/DMC,

Todd raises questions about Black leaders stressing separatism, and you accuse him of being associated with the Klan.

Nice.

Oh and PC...I also have a callous...on my finger.

I resent being called a member of the KKK, and for information like you really care. I have many more black friends than I do white friends. I do not condone the slave wars, I do not condone the KKK. I am disgusted at your insinuation that I am a KKK.

Wait, where does Todd's thread say anything about separatism? I viewed Smiley's book as a modern day Black Is Beautiful type of commentary.

When any leader says "think (fill in the blank) first", it naturally tends to ring of separatism. Mr. Smiley may not say it explicitly, or even mean it in a literal sense, but other leaders such as Farrakhan have said it and do mean it. Why can't everyone just be Americans first? (God, now I sound like lavender). I have no problem with any race promoting their cultural identity, but I think the main emphasis should be to try and get along as a nation first and foremost.

So which part of the white patriot agenda do you disagree with? From the tenor of many of your posts you stand closer to the values of these people than to the values, let's say of Lavender.

And let me tell you, for all of your snipes at liberals, a shot across your bow as a conservative seems in order. The field doesn't belong to you. And tell me about this "some of my best friends are black," routine. How do they feel about the attitude implicit in your posting of this thread. Do you talk to them about how it is to be black?

And there stands PC on the sidelines throwing brickbats at everyone. You add so much to the conversation with your snide comments. I can hardly wait for what you'll say next.

OMG PC...you are really a soft creamy center....

Now, Todders....I am confused....you say you have
more friends that are black than white....
but last week when I asked what your friends would
say when they saw your life size dolly....you
told me you didnt have any friends....

So what gives?

;)

By friends in the above statement, I mean people that I have in my life that I have met and could name by name. if I saw them again. When I was in New York doing some works I met a lot of great people who were black.

I agree, but I believe that minorities have to take two steps to get there - first, overcome the negative stereotypes, then feel part of one nation. Smiley's book seems to be promoting this first step. Taken too far, this leads to separatism. But as it stands now, we are already divided. Maybe this approach would help?...

(If you can't tell, PC, I'm friends with lavender. :))
