Think about your avatar

Muton Inflatable

Yes, inflatable sheep in the av...

Yet I would discuss the Bush UN Speech, Zimbabwe land reform, The recall of Parliament and the Blair dossier or Shaved pussies or cock rings.

I set the tone, I type the words. Muster the mental powers to focus...or push off and read something else.

I'm still learning my way around lit but I've noticed that when people change avs' they change on every post they've made. So even if you had a serious av for a serious thread, if you change it to a sexy or silly thing for another thread, anyone who looks at your post on the serious thread will see the new av. I'm with Freya2 on this one. Don't judge the book by the cover.

Well said indeed

This is "re-god-damn-diculous"

If the photo of an ass is not appropriate on 9/11, then it probably isn't on the other 364 days of the year.

I say what I want and when I want to say it and rely on the reader to muster the intellectual capacity to read the words in the context in which they are written and posted notwithstanding the av. If the reader can not do that, then the problem is with the reader and not with the owner of a given av.

With all the stuff going on, I can not believe there are those who even think this way or that this is "an issue." Get a bloody life!!! Have a nice day.

(Footnote: I put a lot of thought into my avatars).

You know, I do have a bloody life.

The point is I respect others and prefer to give them a right to choose whether or not to see my breasts, which were posted humorously for a CONTEST.

Thanks so much.

LMAO, I know...what can I say.

(Please note: in my previous post I did not mention Warren Christopher, Tom Daschle or butt plugs.....But I could have despite the "love ewe")

Now why are you taking my general statement personally??? Unless it somehow hit rather too close on to home?? If I had meant for you to do so, I would have named you out-right in my statement.

TYVM :)

That av was all in fun Intrigued, I understand why you took it down after awhile though, I'd feel the same way.

I am settled on this av for now, it pretty much reflects me as much as I am comfortable with. I won't show my face for privacy.

It matters not whether you named me, and I really don't care if you do address me or anyone else personally. I was merely reiterating my stand and why i feel the way I do. My thoughts were from the other side of the issue as one having an av that reveals their breasts, not from the side of the reader. All in all, I think my stance is one of kindness and respect.

so blue, thanks, and I rather like your av, it always catches my attention because it hints, yet doesn't totally reveal. I really like that. :rose:

Thanks girly :)

You have such a pretty face and nice smile in yours, I like it very much :)

Never... I've often thought of the very same thing. It's like showing up for an interview dressed in jeans and t-shirt, but yet your applying for a serious job.

Unfortunately, on Lit. attempting to make that distinction is not possible because your AV changes for all your posts.

Because of this, I DO try to make an effort to hear the words and not let the AV alter my opinion of what the poster might be trying to state.

I guess I'm shallow, because I can't dismiss the visual impact of the avatar from the content. I know I do this in real life too, and I know it's wrong. If someone is dressed in a way that is incongruent with the situation, I feel that inconsistancy, and it colors my appreciation of what they're saying.

Having been here a while, I don't have trouble with regulars who change their avs often, or use silly ones for serious posts--but that's only because the av isn't telling me anything about the person, I already "know" them.

We select avs because we want to project a certain image, as freescrfr said, or express a certain mood. What's the line from Hamlet? "Clothes doth often make the man?" Outward appearance doesn't really make someone, but you can't totally dismiss the idea that it colors the way other will see you.

But the view of the reader was the raisson d etre of the thread in the first place.

Your stances are always kind and respectful. I am sorry that we have had to have this exchange. But, I can agree not to agree with you and still be your friend.

Some people take LIT way too seriously. (Not any one in particular)....

Now, I am going to work. Real life is out there-------> NOT on this screen.

Inflatable sheep are so cool!!! Baaa!! Love Ewe All

Actually, that av makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

am stunned people have this much to say about something the size of a postage stamp and that exists only in virtual space

You have made my point with eloquent brevity.

Have you gotten back to the UK??

Hey, now that's pretty funny. I guess you're sincere, that you don't look at the avs, because I've used various sheep pictures for nine months (on and off), hell, some people refer to me as "Brother Sheep," and if you knew that, you'd have gotten the joke is was making with my comment. Don't worry about it though, I'm just a muttonhead.

Never, as to your original post, (because I haven't read the entire thread) Yes! Very well said! This is why my breast av (for the av contest) had to go after only 2 days, it just wasn't right to force that on anyone, and also, who could possibly take me seriously with my nipples in their face?

Excellent! :)

Well I for one took your av very seriously :p and tok it and took it and took
it and took it and took it

I think the line you're looking for is "Much Ado About Nothing."

My av is a drawing I did of my reflection in the mirror... I happen to like it.
You know? There is a button in your edit options where you can turn off all avs so you don't have to have them distracting you. If avs bother you, turn them off.

Seriously, I always look at the avs....sometimes I even comment on them. However, I am always more focused on what one says or does. Even in the case of intrigue's breasts. I am far more interested in the whole person than in a pair of breasts. I am 38 years old and I have seen a lot of naked people. I want to meet some real people. Words and deeds are more telling than an avatar.

Thanks Brother Sheep...I was unaware of the nickname. I like it :)

My take

I judge others on the contents of their posts, not their av's.

I picked my to stay in context with my handle and it is none to serious if you ask me. Interestingly enough I have been accused of being and/or taking myself to seriously one some threads. I can't but help to wonder if I would get more serious if I were to use a non silly av?

A huge # of av's I don't even understand but yet ofttimes the poster is successful, well thought of, etc., etc. So I guess I just fail to see the connection.

I have no business being serious.

agreed.. it's a picture. so what. deal.

I love my AV, see it? it's the clear one...

As much as I like you, and its alot, you do at times really push my buttons with the way you:

1. Reply so sarcastically to others with comments such as "get a life" when you cannot see them, know little about them, and have no clue as to whether or not they are in need of "getting a life".

2. The way you (and so many others) view this as not "real life". We are real people sharing our minds and emotions as best we can, what isn't real about that? And if it is not real life, why do you take part so much?

I would think someone so beautifully blessed with a command of more than one language can find a better way to speak to others while making your point and sharing your perspective. It is not necessary to belittle others for differing from you.

soblue, thank you, I appreciate that. :rose:

peachykeen...what you said made me realize that I am still not making myself clear. My one and only point I have made thus far is that for myself, I'd rather not have a breast av (as I did for 2 days due to the contest) out of respect for others who may not want to see my breasts blasted in their face. And yes, I did feel very strange going into serious posts, but thats just me, and in no way should I be judged for it.
Now, as far as being a reader, and seeing avs in posts, actually, I seldom notice them, I go straight to the words posted. Yes, avs can be distracting, but somehow, my mind manages to overcome....
