Russian trolls harm nothing without a largely willfully ignorant and gullible populace ready for the exploiting...

How can this be addressed without inciting more of the same, or pushing many further into hatred?

Trick question, it can't.
Anomie and Simulacra.
Hang on.

Sure it can.

Institute a new law making it a Federal Felony offense to knowingly spread misinformation. Include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all the other social media outlets, and hold individuals responsible for passing on information that is not verified.

Fines for media outlets should be in the $1M range with fines for individuals in the $50k range.

I GUARANTEE, that all the speculative, and purely made up news would disappear real fast.

Of course CNN is gonna say, "Well, we're not actually a NEWS outlet, we're registered as an ENTERTAINMENT company. Tough shit. Law still applies.

There wouldn't a liberal in the entire country not wearing orange and damned few conservatives, either LOL

It sure would simplify things for the few remaining, though!

OMG! Outside influence during elections. Lies are told by parties. Impartial news outlets!!! And it's only happening now!

Pull your panties back on and grow up.

People knew these two candidates long before the Russians came around.

If the American public (any country's public) are too stupid/lazy to do their own research and believe the off-brand websites, then tough shit.

There is no fair in politics.

The Dems lost because we had one in the White House who wasn't overwhelmingly spectacular and then they tried to feed the Wicked Witch of Politics to us in Hilary Clinton. My guess is that she could have never won based on her reputation alone, add to that her husband and Donald Trump share so many qualities that she refused to acknowledge that she lost a lot of would-be female support. Trump won because he wasn't a politician and he was running against Hilary.

Thank god for the Electoral college, because a lot of the States do not want to be ruled by the few.

And Trump would be the first to be fined.
