Things you were taught... that proved useless.

A place to put those things that you were taught at school but have proved to be of absolutely no use, whatsoever, in your adult life.

For example, despite frequent visits to France, Canada and other French speaking nations I still have yet to find the occasion to use this gem.

le singe est sous la table.

So come on... what did they teach you that you have never used.

Lol! Great idea for a thread, Long! Hiya, btw!! :)
I think for my useless bit of scholastic knowledge, it would have to be Pythagoras & his blasted theorem!!!! I'm trying to work it into my everday dealings, but no luck!! I'm sure it'll come in handy one day. Maybe when i'm carpeting my favourite triangular room, or mowing a triangular piece of grass, i'll be able to figure out a quicker, easier way???? Lol!! Who knows!!

One more. I'm still waiting for the day that a rock god ascends onto stage to massive pyrotechnics, whips out his recorder and launches into "Three Blind Mice" - just so I can say, with a moist eye -

"That could have been me up there"

I use it. Trig identities which I thought 'what the hell would I ever use these for', I'm paying for it now.

There has to be something. Oh yeah, the African nations. From 28 years ago, how many are even still there?

Damned imaginary number i and 1. That has to be the most wothless thing that anyone has ever tried to teach me.

Jus popping in with a little bump for my Long friend!! :)
(I can't sleep again tonight!! Lol!!)

*hands Nina a hot chocolate*

Now I seem to remember there was something in Biology about the release of certain hormones and going to sleep. Now what were they and how did it work again... damn those teachers!!!

:D

I remember learning to tie my shoelaces. What a waste of time after the invention of velcro.

really? I'd rather wear shoes that tie. they've always felt more secure to me.

the parts of a worm...it was important at the time to know..so that you dissected the correct parts...but now?? Ok...who's dissected a worm lately? (and cutting a worm in 1/2 with a shovel)

I was trying to be facetious.

Suppose I should have studied that in school.

nah, you are so not an idiot...please!

I would have to say Calculus. I just took it for the first time 2 years ago at University...it busted my ass for a whole semester and I've since forgotten pretty much all of it. Unless you are in a field that requires heavy calculations on a regular basis, I'd say its pretty pointless. The only thing in fact I did learn was to stay away from it altogether.

The main two...

After 55 years I would say algebra was a total waste time , but the absolute most bogus concept ever to have been thrust upon me are the benefits of organized religion

I hated algebra...took it more times than anyone should be forced to. Didn't understand it all through HS....then was riding the bus home from college one day and I finally figured out how to figure out mph...so not a total waste....

Now trig though...I don't think I've ever used that...but I still remember "SOCATOA"...I think thats it anyway...

When you want to make a right angle, take a line 3 units long and another line 4 units long. If the distance between the two ends of the lines is 5, you got a right angle. If not, you don't. Especially useful when carpeting, making counters for your new kitchen or if you or cutting cloth to make clothes. Of course, when you set up these lines you will probably be using yard sticks and tape measures.

1 is useful, i is pretty much only used in optics and other fields that rely on moving forms of energy interacting with mediums as opposed to building prescribed structures.

Here's something that I taught last week...........

corelative, subordinating and coordinating conjunctions. The kids were so excited!

SOHCAHTOA

Sine (Opposite over Hypotenuse), Cosine (Adjacent over Hypotenuse), Tangent (Opposite over Adjacent)

And the linguists scoff.

Algebra I agree with as being totally useless.

Another totally useless thing is to me is accounting. I will never use it and therefore it is totally useless to me. At least the way that it was being taught made it totally useless to me.
