I'm listening to the new Barenaked Ladies single, "Pinch Me". I normally hate their music, but this one I like for some odd reason. They actually had some meaningful lyrics happening until they belted out "I just made you say underwear". Was that really the only thing that rhymed? Sheesh. Now I remember why I didn't like them.

Yeah. That goes for a lot of bands nowadays...
I especially hate when they ruin songs that have already been done...
"American Pie" for example...

I'm not a fan of Barenaked Ladies for just that reason. I don't hate them or anything, they just get on my nerves.

Madonna should be SHOT for her version of American Pie. She took one of the greatest songs of all time and turned it into commercial, soda pop shit.

Leave good songs alone! No one will remember your cover anyway. There aren't many exceptions.

I am sorry but i disagree wierd al's take on american pie is the only exception that you shouldnt touch old songs

For some reason, I remember more good cover versions than bad ones at this hour. I would never thought anyone could do anything to improve "Purple Haze" but The Cure's version is different and damn entertaining. It actually made me listen to Hendrix again to contrast the two. Same with "Bizarre Love Triangle" by Frente, they slowed the song down from New Order's version and made it acoustic and the song had a totally different feel than the original. Tuck and Patti's version of "Time after Time" is pretty cool also.

I think there is an overall theme to my attitude - if you are going to redo something, be creative and different (think Oingo Boingo's version of "You Really Got Me"). The couple of bad ones I can think of are dance versions of great songs with a bad disco beat thrown in the background.

There is a special bar band category to be discussed. The worst I ever heard was a group of five white guys at The Holiday Inn in Blytheville, Arkansas with bad perms try to cover Cameo's song, "Word Up". Ouch!

You're right, Madonna's version was much too short. She should have done the entire song.

Ditto on what Creamy said. Madonna's version wasn't too short, it was WAY TOO LONG!!

Only good cover of a classic I can think of at the moment is Lenny Kravitz's version of "American Woman". What do you think of that one?

I agree sallygirl, his version rocked.

The Dead did a butt load of covers that would have otherwise died like a fart in the wind..ex. Lovelight

Aside from them having coverd others, Most fail and It isn't a good way to put your pro career into highgear. Poop-ular music today is turning into a methane laden pile.

Mr. Toad Wierd Al does not do remakes those are comdedic interpretations. That is something completely different than the subject of this thread.

Well, one I can think of that I liked was Pearl Jam's rendition of "Last Kiss." I love their version... but both are nice.

One that just cracks me up, though, is a remake of that Eazy-E song, "Boyz in the Hood" by some white guy alternative band.. the video is simply hilarious... I die laughing every time I see it!
