ShopRite Refuses to make a Cake...for Adolf Hitler


ShopRite is really making me question my ethics this morning: They denied making a cake for a 3-year old's birthday, but only because that child's name happens to be Adolf Hitler.

Heath and Deborah Campbel's oldest child, Adolf Hitler Campbell, got turned down when his parents attempted to request a cake for their little bundle of joy. ShopRite's response:

"We believe the request ... to inscribe a birthday wish to Adolf Hitler is inappropriate," said Karen Meleta, a ShopRite spokeswoman.

Seems... Reasonable? The Campbell's don't seem to think so...

"ShopRite can't even make a cake for a 3-year-old," said Deborah Campbell, 25, who is Heath's wife of three years and the mother of the children. "That's sad."

I suppose I see their stance... I mean, sure, they also named another one of their children "Aryan Nation", but do they have a point? Feel free to discuss either sides ethical questions, but rest assured: one local retailer knows their scruples.

Young Adolf Hitler Campbell will be getting a cake from Wal-Mart this year.

Idiot parents have a legal right to name their kids whatever they want.

They do NOT have a right to force a merchant to perform a service or produce a product that the merchant deems offensive. As long as ShopRite is consistent in its service policies and is not discriminating against a legally protected class of individuals.

Mom and Dad can bake their own fucking cake and write on it with a Sharpie....assuming they can write.

This was pretty easy, BB. Give us a tougher one next time.

Not necessarily. If I were that kid, I'd just get my name legally changed when I was of age. xD

Nowadays you can also sue your parents for negligence and whatnot. I could always do that. xD

Well that is doubtful. They named one of their kids "Hinler". I assume they meant "Himmler" but were too stupid to get it right.

They should be shot THREE times. Once for each tragically named child.

I’m sorry — did the man who named his child after one of the worst genocidal madmen of history demand tolerance? Campbell walks around in authentic Nazi boots and decorates his house with swastikas, and then demands that people be tolerant of his intolerance. It sounds like a Monty Python skit: No one expects the Nazi Tolerance Inquisition!

And by the way, it wasn’t just the name, either:


Karen Meleta, a spokeswoman for ShopRite, said the Campbells had similar requests denied at the same store the last two years and said Heath Campbell previously had asked for a swastika to be included in the decoration.

You know, nothing says Happy Birthday to a toddler like a big ol’ swastika in the middle of a birthday cake.


And why did these parents lay an Adolf on their child? I mean, besides all of the Nazi worship going on in Chez Campbell? Because “no one else in the world would have that name.” No kidding. Ever wonder why, genius?


Greenwich ShopRite is not a government agency, and they don’t have to do business with the Campbells if they choose to refuse them. It’s not intolerance — it’s a business decision.

Campbell could protest it and try to start a boycott, but something tells me that ShopRite’s customers might feel better knowing that the goose-stepping Campbells won’t be anywhere in the vicinity.

No word on the cause, but it can’t be because of the names. Can it?



Holland Township Police Sgt. John Harris says he was there to keep order Tuesday when workers from the state Division of Youth and Family Services removed 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell and his younger sisters, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell.
Harris says DYFS did not tell police the reason the children were removed. At least one officer who helped take the kids out of the house said they did not show outward signs of abuse or neglect.


Listen to the audio at the link and you’ll hear one of the cops say the kids were “happy” and playing when they got there. The state statute defines child cruelty to include the infliction of “unnecessary suffering or pain, either mental or physical” — like naming a kid after Hitler? — but it also defines “child abuse” to include, er, the habitual use of profanity. (Yes, really.) I poked around to find a Supreme Court precedent that’s on point, but the truth is you don’t need it: If being a Nazi sympathizer is grounds per se for having your parental custody terminated, then as a practical matter, Nazis aren’t allowed to have families in America.

And as far as I know, the right to privacy means that everyone’s allowed to have a family in America. Exit question: Did they trump up some other grounds as a pretext? Too much cussin’ by dad, maybe?
