I want to open a coffee house or maybe a drive thru in a nice small community that's not too far off the beaten track that I can't drive someplace more exciting if the whim takes me...any suggestions?

*Makes some lattes and Milky Way Mochas as she listens to advice.*:nana: :nana:

Believe me, any place, big or small, outside of Portugal and Italy is in dire need of a good coffee shop...

Come on to my town. We need a nice neighborhood place where there's live entertainment in the evenings on a small stage and you can get just good coffee and some sandwiches and there's no angst or big chain store mentality.

I"m serious! Come down here! I'll help!

We need a nice small joint where you know the names of everyone who works there, and they know your name. You can come in the evenings and hear anything from a small jazz combo, to a folks guitarist, to a flute and piano playing etudes, to a barbershop quartet. It should be quirky, but not flaky.

The coffee should be hot and strong. No fancy-schmansy half double no-caf stuff. Just coffee. Maybe some mocha stuff. And real cream. And hot tea. Keep it simple and homey.

Make it a place where you want to buy the CDs that they're playing over the store's sound system and you never quit eknow what you're going to hear next, but you know it'll be interesting. Have places where you can sit and read the paper, or a book, or just think and write. Make it friendly for both old and young people. Just a place to be when you have an hour to kill and want to do it ina place that feeds the mind and eases the soul.

And have sandwiches. Good ones on hearty bread. And maybe soup with different specials every day.

That's what I'd love here.

Oh how embarassing, I went to say "Hey Jim, where is "here"?" here and started a new thread by mistake...

Oh well, it might get some interesting reponses, it won't be the frist time I've looked like an idiot....

So, back to the question at hand...where Jim where?

coffee, double strong anywhere is a good idea.
Pick a spot: If you brew it, they will come.

And I went and answered that other thread, too. :)

I thought I'd have both: Like the Cup of Joe, .15 cents a cup, and then the expresso drinks. I just hate how restrants charge you over a buck for something that only cost them 4 cents to make, and you might not even get that value if the waitress doen't come by and refill you. Or a Pot of Joe, for a buck.

Am toying around with thoughts and plans, but ya, I want live local bands, a free used book exchange, and like 30 flavors of pie, and then the speical of the day: Whatever kind of sandwich and cup of soup or chili or salad for a cheap price.

one place here only charges 45 cents for coffee

and it is farmers coffee Good stuff :D

I hate to break this to you JMJ, but unless Southern States starts doing a cappucino bar, you're out of luck my friend. (Don't feel bad, we have a similar problem here, only everything's shmaltzy faux hip. )

The Nordstrom's coffee bar in Annapolis, however is worth the trip. Mocha Biancos are to die for.

My dad went to Wisconson and said there weren't any drive thru's and the research I'm doing shows that the further east you get the harder it is to get people to try new things.....

And Starbucks, I've discovered, doesn't do soy or rice milk. Silly of them, good for me.

Nordstroms? I'd die, flat out stone dead on the floor if I ever set foot in there. :(

We have the Borders Books which has a nice coffee place and good books to read. And now we have a Panera Bread place which serves great coffee and sandwiches. Neither of them have that certain atmosphere, though.

We have a law against chains stores in our town! But luckily a medium-small city is only a half hour away, so it ain't that bad, but this town of 4 thou is still boring as staring at a blank wall.

A really good coffee place is like a really good bar; you build up a family of clients. Actually, three families...the daytime "Mommy needs a break/I'm on my work break/real estate agents meet here" group...the early eve'n "On my way to or from theater/meeting blind date/College student needs extra cafeine and sugar before (blank" group, and then the "I'm here for the cafeine/poetry slam/band" group.

So you need a place that when you come in you don't feel awkward, the people are friendly and glad you came, you feel like you can be yourself but know not to cross the line of bad manners.

I think a small meeting room in the back would be good, too. For privite parties, gaming groups, etc.
