This afternoon I walked into a local Barber Shop and told the lady there what I wanted. Short, above the ears and tapered in the back. She looked at me in shock, she couldn't believe it nor could the rest of the people in the shop. Then I pulled out a plastic bag and mailer. They started grinning.

The crew there started talking about it and came to a decision. They wanted to give me the works for free. I turned down the hair wash though. (The last time I allowed someone to wash my hair in one of those layback sinks I couldn't use my left arm for a week.)

They did the brush out and then braided my hair before clipping it off.

The braid was photographed then packaged up for the donation. (Yes it's being donated to "Locks of Love".) The braid was a total of 21 inches long.

So now I have short hair, some kid will get a nice wig and I got a free haircut out of the deal.

Good for you. I donated mine to Locks of Love, too, once I convinced them that yes, I really did want to cut two and a half feet off.

Bravo Cat!

I got almost fourteen inches when I cut my tail off.

I had some wierd dreams the night after I cut my hair, anyone else?

If my 24"+ of hair hadn't been a dreadlock when I shaved it off I would have done the same. What a waste it was...

Yay Cat! What a nice fella! :D

We do free haircuts for people who donate also.. a lot of places do. :)

We learned at the hair show that if the hair isn't packaged properly, by the time it gets there, it is useless. (The class we were at was not Locks of Love, but a different organization, but some of the same rules applied.)
It was a little disappointing to find that out that we had been sending useless hair. :(
We haven't had anyone donate since then, but the next time they do, we're going to contact Locks of Love and find out exactly how it needs to be done. :)

Congratulations to you for your good deed... I might reccomend a hat and ear muffs! ;) :D

They can have all of my hair they want. First they'll have to find it, though. :D

Very cool, Cat! I just decided recently to start growing mine out for this purpose--I didn't know that it would be free when I got it cut off.

Just a little info for anyone thinking about donating..
The hair cannot have any color/bleach/perm in it.
The chemicals they use to sterlize it and whatever else is too harsh for any of our 'make our hair pretty' chemicals.
It will melt the hair into mush, again making it useless.

:) Just wanted to let ya guys know! :)

I do this every two years, and usually have at least 18 inches or so to donate. Great cause. :)

That's really wonderful, all of you who do that. :rose:

I once decided to grow my hair out and it never made it past where it is about now, a couple inches past my shoulders. I have been known to have a hair envy.

Through the years I've had little girls that did this in my class. I'm talking very young children that had hair down to their bottoms. I would run up to McDonald's and get them a Happy Meal and we'd have lunch together *grin*.

A lot of my Mom's told me that it seemed to help the anxiety the kids had about such a change. Of course, my teenager did it when she entered high school, and she cried when they started cutting, too. She had the whole beauty shop (and me lol) in tears of happiness by the time they were done! It's a very special thing you did.

No tears on my part.

I grew my hair out for the purpose of donating it. If I didn't have that intention then I wouldn't have done it. (Long hair is a pain in the butt for me. It keeps getting in the way.)

Having had the hair for three years I have gotten some habits that I didn't notice before.

I keep reaching back to pull my Pony Tail back and finding it's not there.

When I get ready to head for bed at night I find myself reaching back to pull the hair band out of my Pony Tail.
