than most humans, they had hidden because they knew the violence and prejudice humans were capable of. they survived by salvaging and stealing technology, as well as raiding for food for the first few centuries of their existence. once they became self sufficient, they spread out, hid, and learned as much as they could. most of this was for survival, but some hoped that one day they could reveal themselves to the other sentients on their planet. they formed a civilization of sorts, keeping in contact with other groups of their kind. they were not prepared for the day when a young human made his way into one of their hiding places. he was barely alive when they found him, but the medical knowledge they'd gained from their years of seclusion and study indicated that he wasn't a normal human. he was much smarter than they had known humans to be, and soaked up information like a sponge, locking it away in his brain. he was also more strongwilled, more enduring than anyone they'd met. after being nursed back to health, he convinced them to reveal themselves, and so, a small group, with him in tow, revealed themselves to the world through a meeting with government officials. that was the beginning of the change in the world.

two years later, in an area of colorado around an abandoned military base known only as Crystal Peak, a small city had been built. it had taken much planning, and a great deal of work, but the first community where humans and furries, or as the young man has named them, Zoans, is complete and starting to thrive. Outside the small city, little more than a town, really, the young man lives in the Manor. However, the story of the city needs to be told. The city isn't very big, yet. There's plenty of room for development, and plenty of people have moved there. It has two movie theatres, three elementary schools, two middle schools, and a large high school, as well as a small college. It has several parks, too, and four public pools, including one indoor one. The hospital is state of the art as well, though it is currently staffed officially by humans (until some of the Zoans go through medical school) though there are some Zoans who are allowed to assist, such as suggesting alternate treatments.

Boasting numerous small shops of a variety of types, the main district is generally the center of trading, though there are plans for a Walmart on the table to be built in one of the other districts. All in all, it's a good place to live. The real trouble will be getting everyone to coexist. So far, the only thing agreed upon is the name of the town. Therianthropolis.

Zephyr knew that she was not gong to get a lot of sleep tonight, sure it was a little late and she had school in the morning and work after that. It was hard for her to really get sleep considering she was studying to be a doctor. She decided that after a light run she would be able to actually get to sleep now.

It seemed like she had been too tired to sleep for the past few nights in a row.

Her mind was racing as she ran, thinkng of this that would come if she became a doctor. She was sure that most people did as she was doing right now. Visualizing their future and working towards it.

And then it happened. Some lunatic came out of nowhere in his/her car and practically hit Zeph. The white tigress leapt off the road and into the bushes. She would have been fine had there not been a hill. She rolled down the steep hill trying to slow herself but finally landed on the ground...

She was out cold after bumping her head on a rock.

Ginger was sure that Sabastian was the right man for the job and she was absolutely certain that this was the right town for it. There were already human and Zoans living side by side. And while they, for the most part, seemed to get along she wanted a controlled environment so she could see how everyone got along and how certain things affected different people.

Like interspecies relationships.

As silly as that sounded in itself.

She walked into the little bar and looked around at some of the men that eyed her upon her entrance. Ginger had to laugh to herself before she took a seat at the bar.

"Hey Merv," she said running a hand through her long hair which was down that evening. "How's business this evening?" She asked as she waited for her usual beer. Yes, deep down she was a simple beer gal. She had cleaned herself up to take over this project.

Merv raised an eyebrow, looking at the gorgeous bunny as she walked in. Ginger had a way of making an entrance that defied her upbringing. He would know, he'd seen her through most of her adult life, and much of her teenage one too. There had been humans who had known of their kind, and even lived there, but many of them moved to give others a chance in the town. It was a shame, but such things happened. He put the glass he had been polishing down, and grabbed a metal flagon from a set he'd bought recently. Some of his customers were prone to dropping the glass ones, so he'd bought these ones. Very nice galvanized steel, lightweight, anticorrosive, and they didn't change the taste of the drinks. He drew her a full mug from a beer tap machine that had recently been put in, and then set it down in front of her. "No salad this time? Must have been a rough day. How's that lad doing?"

"No salad this time? Must have been a rough day. How's that lad doing?"

"Sebastian's doing fine," she said. "Still getting all set up in that manor of sorts..." She admitted before noticing the flagon. "Well this certainly is a change. Tired of cleaning up glass I suppose?" She asked with a soft chuckle.

Her eyes moved around the bar.

"Some of the regulars are missing. I didn't get near as many catcalls," she laughed goodnaturedly. "What have youbeen up to lately? I've been so busy I haven'thadtime to stop and talk."

Merv grinned, then nodded, motioning around the bar. "The regulars, well, some of them, decided to clear out to make room for the younger guys. But, I've been able to expand a bit, so we'll be getting customers soon enough. As for the replacement of the glasses...it got expensive. With these, no need to replace them. I bought quite a few, and saved a lot of money. He suggested them last time he was in town, actually. So, do you think this will be successful? I mean, opening the town to the rest of the world isn't a bit much, is it? Granted, business will start booming, but how long will it last?" He started polishing another one, then served one of the customers at the bar. "I may have to hire another gal if we get too busy."

"Aw Merv you always worry far too much," she said patting his hand before he moved away to help a customer.

"I may have to hire another gal if we get too busy."

"Too bad... You would have to deal with a real girl and not just me," she said chuckling to herself. She hardly thought of herself as a girl even with her position and clothes now.

"Merv, why didn't you ever get married?"

Merv raised an eyebrow at that, then shook his head. "You know as well as I do that I'm way too old. Besides, this bar is my life, and it's going to be hard to find a woman who would feel the same way. You're about the only woman who comes in here anymore. Speaking of which, shouldn't you be working, instead of getting drunk?" He was teasing her, as he usually did.

"If you're too old then I'm too old," she said with a laugh. Sure, he was a little older than she but he was still in good shape... a bear of man to be sure. Ginger had had a crush on him as a girl and there was always a little bit of an attraction buthe never seemed to return it so she was left with little options.

True she had Sebastian and she loved him but there was that longing there.

Oh well.

"And you know as well as I do that if I work too hard I will go on a drinking binge and I will have to bother you again. I was lucky that the reporters didn't see me like that."

Merv had to grin at that statement. Then he shook his head, and topped off her glass. "That reminds me, you still owe me for that table you broke when that raccoon tried to grope you. Anyways, don't worry about me. If it happens, it happens. In the meantime, this bar is all I can handle, so dating intentionally is out of the question." He smiled, then looked at one of the remodellers, who was busy in the doorway leading into the back. "With luck, this place will be fully open in a week. I think the Old Wolf would be proud. So what exactly is his job besides keeping the peace out there? And I hope you didn't put too many girls in there. Otherwise, you'll probably be getting a call for help the moment one of them goes into heat." He couldn't help but laugh at that thought. He'd met the kid, and he'd seemed understanding and capable enough, but...well, he didn't really know what he was getting into."

Raze whistled to himself as he stocked shelves. He didn't have much to do today, he realized. He had been preparing for almost a month for the new inflow of customers that would probably start. He finished putting cans on the shelves, then stood straight, stretching. He thought for a few moments, then realized he needed to run to the Sherriff's station to check on something. He ducked out of the shop, putting up a sign saying he might be a bit late opening. The trip wouldn't take long, but the station was actually outside the city.

He ran quickly, then stopped suddenly, listening. There it was again. A low moan, coming from the bushes down an embankment. He looked over the edge and saw a young woman at the bottom of the hill. He winced slightly as he saw her, then bounded down the slope. He skidded to a stop next to her, and knelt down, checking her over. Finding her injuries minimal, he checked to see if she had a concussion. Fortunately not, but the bump on her head needed attention. He thought for a moment, then picked her up gently, and ran back up the slope, heading for the local hospital immediately. He checked her in, staying long enough to make sure the Deputy knew who to talk to, then passed on a message through the young peace officer about what he had to check on. Then he headed back to the store. He sent some flowers to the young woman's room, then started opening up.

"Oh Merv... I thought we agreed that the table was in the past and it was over with now," she said smiling up at him and batting her lovely big eyelashes at him. She hoped she could win his good graces with that look and soft sigh.

"With luck, this place will be fully open in a week. I think the Old Wolf would be proud. So what exactly is his job besides keeping the peace out there? And I hope you didn't put too many girls in there. Otherwise, you'll probably be getting a call for help the moment one of them goes into heat."

She laughed outright at that. "Of course I sent plenty of women up there, just a few men. He needs a crash course and some experience," she said. Even as she did she knew she was trying to convince herself that she was not just being evil to torture the cute younger man.

"It'll be fun..." she reassured.

Merv grinned at her reaction, then turned to look at one of the morning shift deputies as the guy came in. He raised an eyebrow, then laughed. "Hey, Jeran, how's the old cat doing?" The deputy just shook his head, and sat down at a table, which elicited a laugh from Merv. He turned back to Ginger, and raised an eyebrow at her denial, then smiled again. "Just remember, humans are fragile. Granted, he's different from most, but he's still fragile, especially if what you told me about his life is true. One mistake, and he'll snap."

"Hey, Jeran, how's the old cat doing?"

She too smiled at the deputy and continued to drink from her tankard.

"Just remember, humans are fragile. Granted, he's different from most, but he's still fragile, especially if what you told me about his life is true. One mistake, and he'll snap."

"Oh honey I know humans are a bit off but I think this will be good for him... really I do. And it's not like I won't be there to help out..." She said looking up at the grizzly bear with a giant smile that said she knew much more than she told.

"He's stronger than we know..."

~~

Zephyr woke up in the hospital and touched her head. It hurt like a bitch and it wasn't long before all of her friends were in the room checking on her. "How did I get here? I remember falling but..." She said.

"Oh this really handsome Zoan brought you in," one of the human nurses said. "And... he sent you flowers!" She giggled a little insanely. The girl was fresh out of nursing school and was still young and excitable.

"But how can I thank him?"

Merv raised an eyebrow at the look on her face, and then smiled. He could see how much she liked the young human. He doubted anyone couldn't see. Then he sat down in a chair he kept behind the bar. "Well, to be honest, I think that if anyone can pull this off, it's you two. The kid DOES have potential, I just think he's afraid to use it. I'm sure he'll need help though."

----

Raze stretched, opening the door to his shop. Then he picked up the phone, and called the hospital to check on the young woman.

"Well, to be honest, I think that if anyone can pull this off, it's you two. The kid DOES have potential, I just think he's afraid to use it. I'm sure he'll need help though."

She laughed.

"Well of course we could do it... It's me we're talking about and I know he can do it. " Ginger smiled at the thought of her handsome little Sebastian. "My real question is can you do it?"

----

"He's on the phone!" One of the other nurses called. Zephyr was surprised at that, he was obviously a little worried about her. She picked up the phone next to her bed and punched in the extension that he was on.

"Hello?" She asked trying to stay calm and not be jumpy. "You must be the man that brought me to the hospital... My name is Zephyr..." She said. "I can't thank you enough," the tigress said. "Let me buy you dinner or drinks sometime..." She offered trying not to seem like a complete nerd.

Merv laughed heartily, then poured her another drink, and poured the usual for the deputy. "Might be a good idea to hire a cook too. I hear the humans have a concept called a Bar and Grill. Might be money in that, especially with humans here. That, and I spend a fortune in snacks anyways. Yeah, I'll be ready. I just hope I'm not too intimidating to them."

---

Raze smiled, and spoke in a soft voice that belied his strength. "It's nice to finally meet you, Zephyr. My name is Raze. I was on my way to the Sherriff's office when I found you. Good thing I did too, judging from the bump on your head. You must have been out there a while. Your clothes were completely soaked." He blinked, a bit thrown off by her offer for dinner. Then he smiled. "I think I'd like that. But can you handle my taste in food?"

"You're not so intimidating as you like to think you old bear," she teased lightly. Ginger really did love Merv, he was too funny. "And you would need a cook to have a grill... probably a few cooks... and waitresses... waiters...." She smirked at the thought.

"Sounds like a good idea to me," she simpered.

The thought 'wet t-shirt contest' ran through her mind. "I'm sorry you had to carry me all the way to the hospital like that..." Zeph said feeling a little embarassed.

"I think I'd like that. But can you handle my taste in food?"

"I'm sure I'll manage..." She chuckled. What? She could eat near anything.

Merv laughed, then nodded. Then he thought for a moment, before speaking. "Know anyone willing to do either job?" He looked at the gorgeous (and slowly drunkening) bunny sitting across from him.

---

Raze grinned, then nodded. "I'll be at Darker's all day. When I close up, I'll be free." He smiled, and looked up as a customer came in and started browsing.

The lop-eared rabbit man stared silently at the piece of machinery that he had in front of him. It was a music box that he had found during his time scourging and every once in a while it would act up again and he would need to take it apart and put it together again once more to get it to operate properly. He had a sneaking suspicion that there was something wrong with the spring, but didn't want to replace it until he was sure that was the problem. Regardless of what the problem was, it seemed that once he had taken the thing apart and put it back together again it seemed to work perfectly fine for about a month, so he couldn't really complain.

He sighed as he pushed away from his desk, having put in the final screw on the music box, and then looked around the room for a few moments. There shelves that had been filled with scraps of wire, bottles that had been filled with screws, nuts, bolts, and other such objects, a wide assortment of screwdrivers and other tools. There was also a soldering iron, and several large spools of different kinds of wire solder in one corner of the room, but it didn't look like they got as much use as the screwdrivers did. Other than that, really the only things that were that notable in the room that the rabbit was now working in was a small television that looked like it had seen a good deal of not so gentle use. The screen was showing a romantic movie, but it didn't look so much like the rabbit was paying any attention to it.

In the corner of the room that was closest to the door that lead to the outside world was a large bin that was sitting under a drop slot, much like you could find at your video rental store, or library. It was the intake slot for broken goods, that he would then haggle with the owner over a price for, and eventually fix. He sighed softly. What he really needed was to step out and get some air. He picked up the remote for the television and turned it off before opening the door to his home, and stepping outside, before closing and locking the door, making sure it was locked before he went anywhere. He'd find something to do, or someone he could talk to, and get his mind off of his work for a while.
