Me too, but a communal sounds like it could be fun. Were those other accounts open to anyone, or just certain people?

Certain people. I did make a few male alts to prove something to myself about some people's attitudes toward gender, but I outed myself afterward. I said pretty much the same thing as a guy as I would have as a girl, and was treated differently. Well...DUH...you say. What a genius discovery...but anyway I like being able to portray different people in writing. I stopped doing it after I realized that the alt culture here isn't really considered art so much as...cowardice.
There have been some major alt failures also, where someone goes on and lets fly, only to be figured out. People usually have an agenda and it will start to show quickly.
It's also easy to figure people out who are hiding by what they don't say and who they don't talk to. Everybody has patterns and given enough time it will trip them up.
Hell, I used to be pegged by my typing speed and my vocabulary. If I used too many big words, too fast, it was me. I also can't play anything straight for too long and have to start cracking jokes at some point or I'm not having fun.
I used to know a friend because he could never spell "veracity" right to save his life.

There have been a few known as group alts. They were designed to wreak havoc and destroy personal relationships.
And the GB being what it is, they worked really well. People turned on each other, throats were slit and blood flowed...
But the real fun began when the alt posters were revealed to be upstanding, trusted friends of the very people who they were harrassing.
It was a lot of fun and some of the best GB dramas ever!

I did stand up for some of them under the idea that you can't expect someone online with a silly name on a forum to be an upstanding citizen, and if you fuck up and spread it around, people will talk.
And the apologies were less than sincere. More "sorry I got caught" than anything else. Too much gleeful arterial spray to be convincing, standing, dripping in emotional blood, trying not to laugh.

I was me in character. One of my characters, we'll call her A, was cyber married to guy B. Guy C wants to prove that guy B doesn't love me, A. I tell him to not worry, it's not a problem, maybe he should be offline for a while. He says okay. But it's not okay.
Guy C makes a female alt to mess with guy B. I'm not with guy B as A, but as D.
Guy C comes on to guy B in D's presence, and B and D rip guy C to shreds.
Guy C then calls me and tells me he has proof that guy B really isn't in love with A, but with this bitch named D, who he seemed really into.
"That was me, moron."
"Oh."

Okay, just be aware that most alts are out to gather information and screw with people, who are then dealing with other alts whose purpose is to gather information and screw with people.
It's like a narc buying from another narc half the time. People are making up as much dirt as they actually uncover just to look like they know something useful.
I'll tend to tell each person one outrageous fact about myself and then see which "fact" makes the rounds.
In high school when people started making up rumors about me, I just made up my own. Some involved gypsy involvement. Shhh.
