James was on his way to the village of Nevercome to oversee the marriage of the millers daughter and the farmers son he’d approved the marriage because the two families working together would increase the productivity of the village.
There was also a long standing law that the Lord of the Manor had the first night rights on any bride wedded on his lands and the bride today was a particularly beautiful girl. Although the villagers hated this law they accepted it for his approval of the marriage without which they couldn’t marry and none of the girls wanted to bear children out of wedlock.
There was of course the distinct possibility that the first born of any couple was the child of the lord of the area if he’d enforced his right claiming first night but that was generally overlooked in the festivities of the wedding as the lord always brought something to help the happy couple get started in their life together.
Today James had brought a large decorated serving bowl and as an added gift a necklace for the bride as she was one of his favourites in the village. He knew that everybody in the village that he favoured her and were expecting him to claim first night rights on her even her husband to be accepted the fact that his bride would be broken by the lord of the area.
James had an escort of six guards with him who were also looking forward to the celebrations as once the wine started flowing some of the women didn’t seem to care who they ended up in the hay barn with and the escort was happy to take full advantage of this.
