"The Witch of Turtle Island

closed

The South Pacific island had been first sighted by Portuguese sailors in the early 16th century. They'd made note of it on their maps, labeling it only as Isle with no portage. With neither anchorage nor significant valuable resources, the half mile long island was both ignored and unnamed for another 200 years. Then, while on watch as the vessel upon which he served sailing past on a dark, foggy night, one particular Spanish sailor noted that the island had the shape of a sea turtle. And finally, Turtle Island became a named place.

Of course, it still remained ignored. There was very little reason for anyone to go to the sand-surrounded-rock. Which was precisely the reason Ella was there alone. Oh, she didn't want to be on Turtle Island either. But then, she hadn't been given a choice in the matter. She'd been marooned there by the other travelers aboard the English ship upon which she was traveling.

Abandoned, for being a witch.

After a very short trial in which she'd been gagged and prevented from defending herself, Ella had been lashed one time for each of 12 accusations of which she'd stood accused. The ship's crew had been chumming the waters with waste to attract sharks, and when the first fins began cutting through the sea's surface, Ella was tossed unceremoniously overboard. The onlookers had expected to see the marine killers bite at the bleeding woman's body, ripping it apart. And yet after several minutes, Ella continued to bob atop the sea, unharmed and seemingly gathering herself after the earlier punishment.

When she rolled to her front side and began swimming for the distant island, the call came to end her life by other means. Several men retrieved rifles, shot, and powder with the intent of putting a large round of lead through her back. Yet as they were preparing their weapons, something went wrong; the small decanter of gunpowder was accidentally set alight and the explosion led to a rapidly growing fire. By the time Ella reached Turtle Island and stood in the surf pounding its low tide shoreline, the ship from which she'd been casted was engulfed in flames. Its passengers and crew were either burned in the sinking wreckage or eaten by the sharks to which they'd thrown her.

None reached the shore of Ella's new home.
