The priest rode into the small castle town of Mistvale surrounded by an escort of soldiers. He wore the long, white robes and the iron chain of his office. The villagers stopped their work and watched as the priest and his escort rode through the town. The Mistvale Castle loomed over the town, its walls dark and forbidding.
The drawbridge was down and the priest and his men were unchallenged as the entered the castle courtyard. As he dismounted the large doors of the castle opened and a short fat noble hurried out.
The priest turned from his horse and gazed at the man as he approached. “I am High Priest Elbar. Count Tios, I presume?”
The noble nodded and bowed his head. “Welcome to Mistvale, High Priest. I have had rooms prepared for you and-“
Elbar cut him off.
“Rooms can wait. Where is the witch?”
***
The Count led Elbar and two of his men deep into the bowels of the castle. After passing through several guarded doors, he stopped at one. “This one High Priest. She is kept here.”
“Very well,” The High Priest said. “You may leave us, Count Tios.” The words were barely out of his mouth when the Count ran out of the room.
At a gesture from Elbar one of his men opened the door. Inside the room was dimly lit and a woman was held with leather cuffs about her wrists and ankles attached to stout chains fastened in the ceiling and floor of the windowless, stone-walled chamber, holding her rigidly spread-eagled in mid-air. The woman’s sweat-slick nudity glistened in the light from bronze lamps.
