There a pomegranate wine from NJ that I love...want more! I think it's from Balic or something like that.

Master and I have a quirk about choosing wines with funny names and/or quirky labels. We're frugal so MOST of them are in the under $10 range. Most reds, too

7 Deadly Zins (closer to $15 but worth it)
Red Truck
Menage a Trois red
Fat Bastard chardonnay
Bonnie Doon Reisling
Jest Red
Jest White (the red is better)
The Stump Jump
Gnarly Head (delicious zin)
Three Blind Moose (white or red, both are tasty)
Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck" aka Charles Shaw. Master loves the cab, I like the sauvignon blanc
TJ's also carries a line of "moon" wines...Velvet Moon, Harvest Moon, Tuscan Moon. All quite lovely.

Oh, one more....Big Red Monster. The label is a hoot, looks like a 50's movie poster.

Then you'd probably like one of my favorites: My Dog Blue

I have bought wine for just that reason. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I got a Chenin Blanc called Herding Cats once. It was OK, but I've had better Chenin Blancs. OTOH, Red Cat Finger Lakes wine turned out quite nice in an adult-Koolaid kind of way.

Does it make any difference whether it's red wine or white wine?

They say that red wine is supposed to be better for you because of something in red grapes. OTOH, a red wine headache can be a real bitch. A while back, it even led to a sex headache, something I'd never had before and hope never to have again.

They do say that there is more anti-oxidants in red wine vice white wine. However, they also do recommend one serving of alcohol a day, and white is fine for that.

Wine does tend to get me buzzed a little faster...but can't say I've ever been hungover from it.

Not terribly happy with Yellowtail, myself. Must be just different enough from the Californians to set me off a bit. Certainly not an opinion shared by a whole lot of people, the stuff sells very well.

Yellowtail is from the Griffith area - Italian style wines had a big influence in winemaking in that region. But Griffith is not usually conidered a top notch wine region, mopre a second string. There's some damn fine stuff there, but it's not guaranteed.

Ah, I once had a single glass of a 1995 award winning sparkling wine from Castel Grisch here on Lake Seneca. I'm not a champagne person but they described it as buttery and a few other things. It lived up to every claim!

I had a shiraz from Australia once, I think it was Jacob's Landing? Very spicy. Nice but a little dry for me.

I live in an "emerging" wine region. Lots of little boutique wineries and such. We tend to buy (being perennially broke) cleanskins. So I can't add much to the discussion on names, but dang there's some good stuff out there (and some not so good...).


One of the more ... interesting ones I've had went by the name of Streaker's Cheeky Red. It was vat ends and less than $3 a bottle. We got a couple that were excellent, several that were quite drinkable and one we poured down the sink!

Red Truck wine, on sale at Fry's for $8. I bought it because it has a 40's era Chevy pickup on the label - same vintage as my old truck from the 60's. The truck (my truck) was a convertible, in that the top had been chopped off - oh wait, we're supposed to be talking about wine, right?

Red Truck wine is red, from Sonoma, and tastes like it's worth way more than $8.

I also like Meridian Pinot Noir, but it's been discontinued at Fry's. Why do they always quit selling my favorite stuff? I don't live in an affluent part of town, and Meridian was the best on-sale-for-$9 pinot noir in the store. I swear, sometimes the free market totally baffles me. (Make that most of the time.)

McWilliams is one of our biggest wine producers. They produce everything from cask and flagon wines through to high quality. i'd guess for export they'd be using some of their better wines.

I've seen Red Truck at TW, never bought it. I'll have to check it out.
