The "What is an Assault Rifle?" thread

I understand that a lot of people don't care about what happens in other countries, but some of us don't limit our concern for other human beings to those who have the same type of passport as us.

Nosy, good for nothing, busybody. Get off my lawn. :)

Also, I like a good argument. And I kind of find attitudes of people in America (or at least on here) kind of fascinating. And weird. (And sometimes I learn stuff.)

A good argument is one thing. Premising a position with nothing more than "You're wrong" isn't an argument. Supporting that position with nothing more than "but that's the way we do it" isn't any better.

Go look at the backgrounds of the people who've done this. In every case, they all had some sort of unsocial behavior and/or were mentally ill. Now look at history. Notice that there are all kinds of different ways to kill people and mankind has done ALL of them at one time or another.

Given that, do you really think that crazy antisocial people won't "find a way" to kill people even if you ban guns?

Telling us "we're wrong" won't fix the problem. Engaging in a fantasy over banning guns won't fix the problem. What that attempts to do is put a bandaid on a severed limb and calling it good while the patient bleeds out. In short, you're looking in the wrong direction and trying to find an answer while ignoring the crisis behind you.

I've had this debate using copious amounts of evidence, and ended up shifting my position on the basis of some of it. But it became blindingly obvious at that point that if you post actual evidence in these debates, no one actually reads it. It just gets ignored and everyone moves on to the next talking point.

If course it gets ignored. No one want to find a solution. Politicians need the issue in order to use it as a basis for re-election. Partisans need it to either get publicly noticed or donations from wealthy partisans for "the cause".

In today's time neither the US Declaration of Independence or Constitution could be written because the societal ideas behind it would be subordinated to the personal ideology of the individual. Everyone wants what they want and no one else can have anything different.

I understand that foreigners realize that America is exceptional and have a fascination with what we do and how we conduct business but you can't or shouldn't be nosy and argumentative with others affairs.

I care about other humans but I don't intrude on how they should handle things. If that were the case you all wouldn't be killing and eating those cute kangaroos and eating horse meat.

Even the U.S.Army doesn't call it an Assault Rifle...

The M16 rifle, officially designated Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16, is a United States military adaptation of the ArmaLite AR-15 rifle.

I can as nosy and argumentative as I choose to be on the part of an internet site that is designed pretty much for that purpose (among other things). I can't vote in the US, and I'm not stupid enough to think my perspective is going to have any effect on US politics, nor even the perspective of a single US citizen - I have pretty much nil capacity to 'intrude' on anything anyone is doing. But that doesn't stop me having an opinion, and in this particular space, I have as much right to express that opinion, and engage in debate around the ideas that are related to the issue, as you do.

(FYI, I'm interested in all cultural differences, not just the American one. It just happens in this particular forum, I encounter American culture more than any other.)

Didn't I already tell you to get off my lawn? I'm sure I did. Why didn't you listen? :)

I read, nosy, argumentative and opinionated, no perspective.... jealous of America. ;) Oh, can't vote. Yes, for the win!
