The Westboro assholes strike again.

As if it wasn't bad enough for Susan's family. This sickens me. I cry everytime I think of those angels.

If there is a hell, I hope Fred Phelps burns there for eternity. I once tried to interview him for an article. I feel like I put my bias aside and asked intelligent questions. He wouldn't answer one of them. Literally. Dead silence.

I think he is one of the most evil, hateful men alive today. He and his congregation make me sick. They make me cry. There's a lot of ugly in this world, but for some reason, those people affect me in a really dark way.

This latest "protest" of theirs? Fucking despicable. Poor little boys can't even be buried in peace.

I agree 100%.

This is a sickening thing to do to a grieving family and community, and it is totally pointless. That isn't a church, it's a cult, and those people are sick. Why can they not see the harm they do? I can't wrap my mind around someone actually believing God would kill two innocent children because the people He gave free will to choose to permit gay marriage. That's complete, utter craziness. I hope the people in the surrounding community returns the favor every time a member of that group dies.

My personal hope is that Mr Phelps spends eternity being butt-fucked with whale dicks.

with molten lava as lube

Any moral fibre those church members ever possessed has long been abandoned.

I so wish they'd come to anywhere within a hundred miles of me. I really, really want to throw liquid shit all over them.

They're a bunch of cowardly bastards. They came to WV when UBB exploded to protest the miners lost. You just don't go into Boone County with that sort of hellishness in mind. They were told in no uncertain terms by authorities their safety could not be guaranteed. The people of that area dared them to show up and assured them they'd see what true hell-fire was about. They left in the night.

I agree they're reprehensible pieces of shit. But I also think the left invokes them the way the right invokes Farakkhan or Sharpton: as if they somehow represent the entirety of a "side," when most on that 'side' either ignore or dislike them.

Yes, they're scum. But there's something else there too.

Truth: I read your first sentence as "bowardly castards."

It grates me that they can even call themselves a church and do it in the name of God.
They're a bunch of attention seeking twats who feel the need to shock...so they keep taking it to a new level of nastiness.

I find it damn hard to be Christian about those people. They're fucked up, I know they need help...but God help me I'd prefer to knock them over the head with a huge hammer. Hard.

Where Mr. Phelps is concerned, my attempt to interview him occurred in 2001. I think he's only gotten more bat-shit crazy and hateful since then.

I'll drive up if I can go with you!

Phelps must have never heard of the White family!

In all seriousness, though, good for the people of Boone.

I totally agree with your point that they're not as widely representative of the right as lefties may want to believe.

Could you explain what you mean by your last statement?

It means I think they're useful to the left, and are therefore given much more exposure and credence than they would earn on their own terms.

An example: look at the news source referenced in the OP.

The outrage is as deliberate a tool as the gesture--perhaps even more, in a way. So I find myself skeptical or dismissive of it.

I'm a Christian, no one I know believes that Phelps is acting as a God follower.

I'm a Democrat. No one I know believes that Republicans agree with him either.

In fact most people I am associated with are not solely right or left anymore. It's all so blurred. Unfortunately often the most outspoken of the extremes are seen as the collective thinking. Mind you, this is in the real world, not the cutthroat world of the GB.

I don't entirely disagree with you, but I would like to believe that at some level, there is genuine disgust for the kind of hate mongering this congregation practices. Having said that, I don't really think Phelps has been able to sway many to his side; he simply serves as ringmaster to the crazy circus of extreme right-wing gay bashers who have been, and will continue to be, filled with hatred and ignorance.

I'm sure that many lefties get off on this man's antics and appreciate what an easy target he makes of himself. But in my case, the outrage is genuine and personal.
