The other night while talking to a friend, we somehow got onto the subject of the walking catfish. And lately there's been some discussion of mantises, scorpions, and giant spiders that give you AIDS. Or that maybe just give French people AIDS. Anyway. I hereby inaugurate the Weird Animals Thread. Post information about unusual animals here. Also feel free to post YouTube video about giant squid, etc.

Probably no one else likes weird animals as much as I do, but bluebell will indulge me with a post or two, won't she?

I don't have any weird animals to report, but I did have some really weird fruit yesterday.

The kiwiberry:

Size of a large grape, green, fuzzless, miniature kiwi.

I consumed the entire container on the way home.

Also, I've always thought seahorses were totally weird.

They are! I knew a guy in college who had some in an aquarium. They were fascinating.

Check out this relative of the seahorse, the sea dragon.

Is a kiwiberry a cross between a kiwi and a....?

I have a couple of aquiriums, and my pride and joy is an African import. A Senegalus Bicher. It was about the size of my pinky finger when I got it, and is over 8 inches now. I'd like to kept the body part comparisons going, but you know....

Anyway the bicher has a partial lung and spiny fins that can be used for walking as well as swimming. I have to keep the water level a little low on the tank or he can get out and crawl around. He's a predator that eats goldfish and he's very responsive to the presence of anyone near the tank. He'll swim along with your hand if you hold it to the glass.

My favorite fish by far.

Who am I to deny a request?
<squishy girl cuddlies for Mo> :rose:
(Heh.)

Tonight I was watching that Nova special on Cuttlefish.
There's a really kinky one here.
You can't go wrong with a name like "Flamboyant Cuttlefish".
How many husbands are going to bed with that nickname? Eh?

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Definitely a weird animal. Does he have a name?

Walking catfish are rather disappointing. A more fitting name would've been the "slithering catfish" as it looks more like a retarded snake wandering around when it is out of water.

Scary nonetheless.

Hey, goddammit. He was at least nine inches long!

<frowning with concentration>

Must...not...make...suggestive...penis...length...remark. Must...not!!!

When I got him, I initially thought I was getting a rope fish (different species). It only took a couple of days for that title to stick, so his name ended up being Rope Fish, even though he isn't one.

For some reason I find that charming.

Dude! That is exactly the same way my childhood pet goldfish ended up with the name Hamster!

Okay, so I nominate you for the Weird Animals thread.
You are a rather interesting specimen, after all.

Nothing a forceps and some Vaseline can't fix.

How tragic.

There is just no emoticon for the face I'm making right now.

Shall we put him in a tank and look at him? Don't put your hand in there, bluebell, he'll bite it off.

(You can, however, pick him up with forceps.)

It would, of course, have to look like an accident.
