Dean Connors always had a problem finding a secretary that would put up with him. It wasn't him actually it was his demands of them. In the past he always hired married women that didn't play around with the male staff. He just expected more of them witch it included being away at times.

Dean was rather a handsome looking man. He was widow and didn't remarry after his was killed in a car accident. At 6' foot 4" and being only 35. Dean was a tall man and having a small gym in his office building. He would go and work out and still take care of his business. He was one of the largest land developer in the state.

He was sitting at his desk looking at his new secretary file. He though she was a little young for the job, but at least she was single and maybe she would work out better then the others. She was to start today and he had yet to meet her. He hire her based on her resume and the recommendation of the Agency.

"Send her in Kathy. He said into the intercom."

Slowly she would rise from the chair that she had been waiting in as she got the nod from Kathy along with a big smile which seemed a bit odd to her but she simply let it roll off of her shoulder for the time being. The door to his office would be opened slowly as she slipped in holding her folder and purse, quietly it would be pushed close as she didn't want to make any noise for she was the type who seemed not to want to be noticed at times. Chair across from his desk would be taken as she looked at him for just a moment looking over the papers in a folder upon his desk, normal she would've notice how hansom he was for a person his age but her nerves were getting the best of her. She was a one who was such a hard worker and she needed this job as she was on her last penny, it wasn't that she was a bad worker but over looked and always let go when times got rough at companies. The helper she was called for she did other's work along with her own as her advice was always the one which should be taken, men liked her but always seemed to leave for another it might have been the fact why she was still a virgin. Trapped within her own thoughts her hands would be placed down upon her lap as she waited for him to finally speak.

He looked up from the resume he was reading and looked at her for a moment. The first thing he noticed was her nervousness. Than how attractive she was, bordering on the beautiful. She had lovely long legs as they showed below the mid thigh skirt she wore. Judging by the way ways the short jacket was hugging her she has very love breasts.

I'm sorry Miss Sanders. I didn't mean to stare. I was looking at you with the memory of your resume. That's what I was reading just now. Please sit down. He went around to his desk and sat down looking at her.

"You mind If I call you Alannis" He asked. She nodded and tried to say yes but he didn't quite hear it.

There are a few things you should know about the job. First of all you are sole responsible to me. You are my secretary and your office his right through there. He pointed to the door to his left. The door to your office is to the left of where Kathy was sitting. Once in your office than you can get into this office, witch your key will open that door.

Today is just get acquainted day. you'll have time to look at everything in your office and most of all the file cabinets. Of course you'll be responsible for all the files. I like to suggest you take a look at them, make sure they are filed where you can find them when ever I ask for one.

"Come lets look at your office". Your phone has a private line to my phone so no one can here our conversation, If you ever have to call me when I'm out of the office. You do it from my office. I like you to take some time and see what you might need as supplies. the rest of time before lunch go through the file and familiarize yourself with.

"We'll talk later again during lunch."

With that short speech she was up in a matter of moments going to the door to her left to her her office wondering why it was right off of his but she paid no mind to that at the moment. Things were looked over carefully for it seemed whoever had this job last left this place a bit untidy but that was no mind for she could clean things up quickly. Old folders were taken and put away as trash was moved to a bag, this would continue for the time being while she tried to keep herself from pulling out some files and working since it was her first day after all. In the end her mind won and she grabbed a stack of files and just began to work not minding the time just getting lost in how she could make things better.

Dean looked at his watch and saw it was already one pm. He walked over to Alannis and stood by the door watching her work. He smiled to himself as he was pleased to see her getting things organized.

He knocked on the door and she turned to look. It's one pm already come and have lunch with me and we can talk some more.

She looked at him with a slight surprise look on her face, but she gave him a half smile and went to get her purse. They took the elevator to the floor below his office where the restaurant was. The hostess took them to his reserved table and they sat across from each other.

"Alannis don't think that I'm trying to pry in your life for I am not. I do however like to know a little about you. I don't mean your private life of course. I like to know the things you like, don't like, how you feel about traveling as you have to do some time. Judging by the way you started this morning. I already like your work ethics.

The job pays very well as you already know. That's because I need people I can trust, and as my secretary I have to count on your trust more than any other employee.Your resume was as good as the others. I picked you over the others because you were single, though you had less experience.

"I mean I enjoy my job to work it's what I live for after all but in the spare time I do have I read and write quite a bit Mr. Connors." she would begin. "Who has time for other things when work should come first it's what should come first since it pays the bills and give people things to do so that they do not become bored with their lives am I not right Sir.." she would ask seeming to come off as a bit of a workaholic suddenly.

Hands would be placed upon her waist as she looked away from him feeling a bit sad suddenly that she didn't have much else to tell him other than a love for music and movies but she always had to go alone since all men seemed to leave her at one point or another. This never brought her down until lately where she put everything into work to try to forget about how lonely she was not to mention the fact that she felt as if she would remain a virgin till the end of time.

"I've always wanted to travel so I am more than open to it Sir if there is a need I know that I can be counted on there is no doubt to that for I bring my best with me everyday.Just give me the chance to prove to you that I can measure up up the rest of your staff" she would finsh in a soft whisper.

Dean listened to her without interrupting her once. His eyes were focus on hers, as he liked to look people in the eyes. Alannis came across as if she loved to work, and that was good to a point. She sounded as if it was her life work. He also noticed a sadness in her eyes. She wasn't happy about something. Dean wasn't one to form opinions with out first knowing the person. Dean knew being his secretary. He needed to know her better.

"I'm glad you do like to travel, though I didn't mean that it would be a holiday. We do have work to do also. The reason I like you to go along, is that I hate taking notes, and that's where you came in. And just in case you're wondering. I pay all the expenses. Even your dry-cleaning if you need to."

"By the way. If you've wondered why your office is where it is. It was my wife. She was running the office. I didn't see any reasons to make changes so I left it as it was. It was allot easier to go back and forth if I needed something and she wasn't in.

"I have no doubts that you'll make a very good secretary Alannis. You seam to be a very dedicated worker."

Alannis showed signs of shyness, at least he though that's what it was. She never looked at him for very long, as if she was trying to avoid looking at him. He wondered why. Surely she didn't have man problems. She's such an attractive woman. He wondered just then if she had a boyfriend.

"I have no problem with taking notes for you Sir or doing anything else that needs to be done while on these trips. There will be no problem if there is no notice before these trips happen since I am single and live alone with no boyfriend to call about being away." she would say with a bit of a laugh but the sadness could be seen there as she tried to brush it off as she wanted to enjoy this meal since it would be the first real one she had had in days now since work seemed to have taken over her whole life.

"Sir if I may ask what happened to your wife if you do not wish to tell me that is fine for that's a line that I shouldn't have crossed in the first place please forgive me Sir..." she would whisper softly feeling very ashamed of herself suddenly for she was never one to try and pry about other's lives even though it seemed she should when she didn't have a real life of her own.

Legs would cross as she stared down into her cup of coffee just thinking to herself as she waited for him to reply, if a bookstore or coffee shop would be opened by the time she left work but they never were anymore since she seemed to leave around 11pm or at times just stayed the night keeping a change of clothes under her desk. her life was a sad one it seemed since she never pushed herself to get the things she wanted and craved for but who could blame her for being the way she was after she had been hurt so many times before and she was just in her early twenties.

Dean was glad he had decided to take her out for lunch. She was trying to open up in her own way. Now he began to understand more about her. She did sound as if she had men problems what ever their were.

Her inquire about his wife's death did surprised him. it was the first forward this she said cense they met.

"There's nothing to forgive Alannis. She was hit by a transport truck in a curve and sent the car over a cliff. The man was charge for manslaughter. There were two cars fallowing behind the truck, they said the truck went into the incoming traffic. Later they found that he had been drinking. We had been married for five years.

Dean didn't know till that very moment why he never talked about the accident. He was glad that Alannis asked. He felt better than he had in a while.

"Alannis I'm an early riser and I get into the office early. It also helps missing allot of the morning traffic. I don't mean to be to forward with this. would you like a ride to the office. I will give us more time to get to know each other and we can go over everything that pertains to your job. As you could tell by your office. It wasn't taken care very well."

She would listen to that story tempted to ask about children but had a feeling that there were none so she wouldn't bring that up at all, carefully she seemed to listen to him as if making sure she could get a vibe of how things worked with him along with trying to learn what things would make him angry. "..I am so sorry Sir.." she would whisper softly.

The food seemed to have long forgotten at least by her as a hand was placed upon the table while fingertips seemed to absent-mindedly drum upon the table while thinking of an reply to he last question. "..Sir that would be out of your way I will be fine to catch the bus or maybe get a cab for I can't ask you to do such a thing..but if you want it to be like this for the first week then I will do that thing sir.." she would whisper softly looking away from him for a moment.

No need to be sorry Alannis. it happen and I've accepted that she's gone. I'm glad you asked me though. it's the first time I spoke of her and I feel better that I did. Some time it's good to talk about things instead of keeping them bottled up.

That's ok Alannis. I just thought it might help you somewhat till maybe you can get your own car. There's if you ever thought of buying one. And I apologize if perhaps I was a little to forward. I certainly don't want you to feel uncomfortable. Dean wasn't sure now if that was a good idea.

Just so that you know. You're not out of my way according to your address. The offer stands if you ever like to take advantage of it.

"I'll take it i just want to come off as that pathetic you know it gets hard at times working and working towards what you want and crave never getting enough to get your goal but these things happen in life and you just have to pick yourself up and try once more." She would say as it was true she was quite smart but some would never know with how quiet she could be.

That was the last thing that was said for the rest of the day they seemed to have avoided one another at least she did for she was beginning to get better looks at how he dressed and she liked what she saw, it was known to her this was just a silly little crush that would pass within a few days and if not it would pass before their first trip that much was for sure and it was with that thought she went home to that lonely apartment with stacks of work in her arms for her night was going to be getting things into order and rewriting things that had become out of date.

Dean was sorry that he made that offer. Not that he made the offer. That he made it way to soon. He was sure he gave her the wrong idea, and that wasn't a good start for him. He hoped he didn't offend her. She could be thinking that he was trying to make a pass at her. To late now to change it.

They got back with very little talking and Dean felt a little uncomfortable now. The rest of the day she was busy in her office. Though he wanted to tell her a few more little things he decided not to. Maybe he'll tell Kathy to tell her or she may ask herself is she need something foe office. He sure didn't want her to buy things she needs in the office.

The next day Dean was in at his usual time. He wrote a note to Kathy to tell Alannis where the stationery, writing pads, pens, pencils, and where all the office supplies were. He would make sure he was out at that time. He needed a hair cut anyways.

Kathy was in promptly as usual, and instead of giving her the note. He told her to show Alannis where all the supplies were. He told her where he was going to Alannis know in case she need to get in touch.

Late to work she was that day since in the end she had to walk the last 12 blocks in the rain for this wasn't turning out to be the best day for her at all. Once inside and things got put away and hung up to dry off she was told where certain things were and she got back to her work of cleaning and throwing things out since she was almost done. A long while later she would notice that she needed a few more pads of paper along with inkpens that actually worked and weren't around for show.

Down the hall she would go to the closet to grab the things she needed but they were up on the top shelve which was just her luck, there being no ladder around she just began to climb the shelves one by one until her feet were resting upon the fourth shelf but as she reached for that last box of pens she lost her balance and went down with such a loud crash she knew many could have heard it along with her scream for it was a long way down after all.

Dean came back into the office to find most of the stuff in the supplies room. He looked into Alannis office and she wasn't in there. He walked over to the supplies room and every body moved to let him pass.

Alannis was lying on the floor. No one knew what happen. Kathy was the first to hear her scream.

"He got on his knees next to her. She was about to move and he put his hand on her shoulder. Don't move Alannis. Are you hurt anywhere?"

Looked up at her boss with blue-grey eyes that seemed a bit confused about what had happened the last thing she seemed to remember was reaching for pens then she was on the floor her head hurting like nothing that had ever happened to her before but it was slowly passing. "..I am fine I need to get back to work and clean up this mess that I made..." she muttered softly feeling like a fool for already causing something to go wrong on her second day of work for this was turning out to be such a bad day indeed.

Work was continued till lunch time when she sat down at her desk with the door closed wiping tears from her eyes as she decided not to eat and work while everyone ate. "Such a bad day" she thought to herself.

Dean couldn't stand it any longer. He knew what Alannis did was rather a silly thing to do. If she had asked Kathy. She would've told her where the stepladder was. instead of trying to climb and the shelves.

He knocked at her door and he head her feeble voice. "Yes come in."

You mine telling me what you're punishing yourself for falling on her heard. Look accidents do happen even if they are for lack of asking for help. Just thank god you didn't break your any bones.

"No stop everything and you have two choice. Either you to lunch with me or I'll have it brought up here to you. Witch of the two would you prefer.

"Neither.." would be all she said as papers were filled out still while she listened to him. Lunch was something she didn't want this day at all nor company for the most part she didn't want him around for it made her long for him even more which wasn't a good thing to happen.

"I just need to work I will be fine Sir.." she would whisper softly.

Dean was taken by her the very first time she walked into his office. Even if he didn't admitted to himself. but that didn't change their relationship as far as the her job went. He didn't want her hurt anymore than any other staff. He knew she was having problems with men but what ever the reason was. she should take it out on him. He did noticed she was avoiding him. This was no good. they had to work together.

"Ok. I'll have something brought up for you. and if you don't eat it you can dispose of it." He told her ."

"There is something else. "Alannis your my secretary and if you keep trying to avoid me we can't work together. You have to tell me what I did wrong. I've already apologized for being to forward by offering you a ride to work."

She listened to him but it seemed as if she really didn't care but it dawned upon her that this mod seemed to be ruining her day and these wasn't really such a need for that. The second part of his statement was caught making her look away from that pile of work upon her desk and look at him for a moment.

"..You do anything wrong Sir I am sorry that I seemed to have come off that way I will get myself in check so that we can move onward" she would whisper softly.

The day would go on with them speaking at times but she was getting so busy as if she was trying to get everything done which she already had, finally the time would turn to about 8pm since she had stayed late thinking she could get an early handle upon all of the work.

Dean didn't say much more after that and went back into his office. he had some things he had to get to. it was getting late already. Alannis worked almost non stop and whether she wanted to or not. He asked her if he could offer her a ride home. It was already after 8:00 pm and she didn't eat all that much.

"Alannis" I think it's time to call it a night. Please don't take this the wrong way. I like to take you out for some to eat than take you home. You've done more than enough for today."

She was pulled away from her working hearing her bosses voice for the first time in hours as that made her look to her clock to see what time it was, it was indeed growing very late and the sound of dinner was a bit nice at skipping lunch for the days of doing such had finally caught up with her.

Finally she would give in and go with him out to dinner which turned out pretty nicely for she had expected it to go rather badly honestly but everything was so smooth and they had a lot of wine to drink, everything was nearing a end as he drove her up for she was growing more and more tired as eyelids closed while he was driving just for a moment before she looked over at him smiling slightly.

Dean wouldn't help notice how attractive she was. The food and the wine tasted good and they looked at each other from time. He didn't know is she was getting tire or she had to much wine. He noticed her eyes were getting a little small as they talk. He was not in any hurry and waited for her to finish dinner.

He kept his eyes on the road as he drove but he was her look at him. He pulled in front of the building she had told and stopped.

He looked at her and they both smiled. "See! It wasn't so bad going to dinner. I've enjoyed your company Alannis."

"I enjoyed your company also Sir.." she would whisper softly for the wine had began to wear off just a bit so she could think clearly once more. Slowly she would reach out to open her door but stopped for a moment before turning towards him and smiling a bit. "Do you want to come up for a bit of coffee and nothing more I swear.." she would whisper softly.
