About the time I found out about my thing, a guy at work was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer with 6 months to live (barring a miracle). That was 2 months ago. He's still at work walking around. He looks to have lost about 40 pounds. He always was a chain smoker...still is, I guess quitting would be moot at this point.

If I had 4 months to live I don't think I would spend it at work. Unless it's an insurance thing. Still, geez. We get to watch him waste away.

I don't know. What would you do?

Maybe he has bills to pay?

You don't really want me to answer that do you?

If that were me I'd be taking that certificate of eminent death to my insurance company and playing "Let's make a deal." And then you wouldn't see me around there anymore.

I'm not really sure what that is.

How insensitive of him to let you all watch him waste away and die.

Insurance companies will pay off early in cases such as these. Obviously for a discount and sufficient proof that you aren't going to survive. So say you have a $100k policy, you can negotiate a discounted immediate payout, say 10% discount. They pay you $90k now saving themselves a $100k payout later. It's done all the time.

Typically, life insurance is never a win for the insured.

But this sort of, is.

If you want to call it that. "We'll give you $90k now as long as you die in 2 months." Hell of a deal.

Ok. Life. I was thinking Medical. Still. What would you do with the cash?

perhaps the man wants to hold on to 'normal' for as long as he can? might simply be a coping strategy. being at work may give that feeling of the everyday.

I'm sure that could be a big component. Heath issues can really fuck with your head. I'm not sure normal is where I would want to go.

Do you always answer a question with a question?

Sometimes when there isn't a good answer , for example your original question. A no win situation. He's been given X number of months to live. What can you do aside from offer the guy pity, advice, moral support or sex?

Advice he may scorn because your not in his shoes.
Pity, he may accept ..ie pity pussy? I dunno how well acquainted you are.
Moral Support? He's dying no escape from that.

Since he has a diagnoses of terminal illness with less than 12 months to live his Life insurance policy (either thru work or individual) may have an accelerated death benefit rider. If so the insurance company usually will pay out some percentage of the cash value of the policy (sometimes it's 75%). It does vary from state to state. It might be enough for one last hurrah.
