I don't believe it. It is a fluke.

As at 10.50 am Thursday 9 April 2003 my story "The Virgin Unbirth" is number one of all Literotica stories with a score of 5.00 from 11 votes.

I know it can't last more than a few minutes but I still don't believe it. It must be a mistake. The story has a plot and takes forever to get started.

I'll enjoy the experience while it lasts and until it joins my other stories in the lower ranges. But can I put it on my CV?

Reasonable explanations of this occurence sought. It can't be votes by my friends - I don't have 11 of them on Literotica and if I had they would be beating me up for using them as characters in my stories.

A stunned Og.

It can't last ...

The story is still number one as at 20.15 BST (British Summer Time).

When the new votes (if any) get added I'm expecting to nosedive to my normal score of 4.00 to 4.30. Of course I ignore my scores below 3.00, doesn't everyone?

I still can't understand why?

Og

you're right.....

I was bored after 5 paragraphs, and left without voting for the first time on Literotica.

I know. I bore most Literotica readers.

I don't expect voters to put up with my attempts to set a scene, or to develop the characters, or to understand British English.

I'm not surprised when my stories are unpopular. I AM surprised to be number one even for a few hours.

Regards from a pleased but still boring Og.

Hey,

I can always go and give you a "1" just to bring it down if you're complaining... :)

Just kidding...

I'm guessing that its a good story for anyone with the patience. It might stay up there forever simply because no one who would trounce it (someone interested in a quick jerk) will bother to get that far. Congrats! You got the dirtman to leave a story w/out a vote. That's quite a feat.

You got me interested. How 'bout a link?

I warned you that it was not the sort of story that wins votes.

It is now down at 4.67 with two additional votes. It will drop further if anyone now finds it.

I'm not posting a link. I don't want any other member of this board to be disappointed. If you desperate you can follow the link to my stories below.

I read your story, and it is well-written, though I don't usually go for Fantasy as a genre.

I have a theory about the "left handed mouse" readers who will have given up after a few paragraphs because there is no masturbation-inspiring content early on. They will drop to the bottom of the page to slap in their 1 vote. Because you have multiple pages they will just move on, rather than "waste" their time finding the vote panel.

When I had half a dozen stories on Lit it was always the shorter ones which got the 1 votes; multiple page stories didn't get so many!

It would be fascinating to know how many "reads" the second and subsequent pages got. On another board I use there is a 75 line first page with the option to continue, and the author gets a reads/continues statistic, which tells you how many people went on to the bitter end.

Thanks for the comment and the reasonable explanation. I couldn't understand how I received so many 5 votes - now I might. Any reader who read to the end must have had perservence, patience and liked the story;) It wasn't my choice of subject. I wrote it to amuse the members of the Yahoo Unbirth group.

I am rewriting some of my stories as a complete "chronicle" of The Silver Vixens. It will be blockbuster length when finished. At 30 to 40 Lit pages I think it will struggle to get any votes at all.

I suspect the optimum is to make it ten or so chapters each of three to four Lit pages, say 10k words each chapter. That is, if you care enough about votes.

There are other techniques, like getting it in the right category, getting it high in the alphabetic order of story titles, getting lots of friends to vote it high early so you get an H while it is still high on the new stories list, getting an E as well helps. To win the monthly competition submit as late as you can while still qualifying and do all of the above. The nasty people will have less time to knock it.

When I first started posting I cared about votes. Now I care about feedback. That is helping me to improve my writing.

I would write even if nobody read my stories. I have to try to satisfy my muses who are very demanding ladies.

I do have a few (less than 5) people who appreciate what I write so much that they e-mail me for updates on progress. I appreciate them.

Of course there are many more who think my writing stinks.

I don't care what anyone else says! I know it's a THRILL to have a good score, even for a few minutes! CONGRATS! Open up a bottle of wine! CELEBRATE, BABY!

And 4.67 ain't bad, either = ) Just stay groovy.

Thank you, Chicklet. I'm on the second bottle now because wine is cheap with France so close.

A drunken Og.

%$#^&%$&^(*!!

My two stories which were right at the tail end of the top 500 fell off the chart. I know damn well there's no statistical difference betwen 4.74 and 4.73, but it makes all the difference for the top 500.

Is it too much to ask to have just one lousy story in the top 500? Poor me. Poor, poor, poor me. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Hey MG,
Maybe your two stories fell off because of my imaginary vote fairy who magically increased two of mine. I knew someone would have to pay for that -- maybe it's because of that scary AV you put up for a little while.

I'll fix it. I'll go and low-vote every story above yours in the top 500 that I haven't read! That will make everything all better.

Good luck. I don't think I have any in the top 500.

Sorry, MG

Although my story made number 1 for a few hours, I've just checked my scores for those 9 stories that have more 10 votes.

A quick and dirty calculation makes my average 4.30 with the range from 4.70 to 2.90.

Those 10 stories that haven't passed the threshold yet have scores ranging from 5.00 for "Harold in India" which is a story but not really an erotic story to 2.78 for "The Hen Party" which is about as erotic as a wet dishcloth.

I would love to write a story that has hundreds of votes and a score of 4.74 but it ain't going to happen unless I create a DG type identity and write what most people on Lit want to see.

If I talk dirty, will they vote for me?

Og who likes MG's stories and votes for them.

Perhaps that's what is wrong. If I like them, they must be wrong for the majority vote. Sorry, MG.

You should know that Og as a severe problem. Hell, I don't even like my stories much.

Which author does? Even the greats kept wanting to revise, rewrite, re-edit.

If only I could write the stories my muses want me to write ... but I don't have sufficient skill and panache.

I still like MG's stories. Get out there and give her some high fives.

I love my stories so much it makes me (and maybe others) sick, and I never revise. Well, sometimes I do.

And I really think we should all be out there low-voting everyone else instead of just helping MG directly. But perhaps my understanding of altruism is skewed...

Belay that, Cosgrove!

Please don't do either one. Just let the stories do what they will do. Thanks for the thought, though.
