The U.S. Open returns to Bethpage Black

There will probably be some practice rounds today for the media to report, and tomorrow.

Two days, and it will count. I sorta have a feeling Tiger might just make things interesting for us on the sidelines. :)

The U. S. Open is not friendly to repeat winners. IIRC, only Ben Hogan and Curtis Strange have repeated in back-to-back years in the modern era (i.e., since the time of Bobby Jones).

The sentimental crowd favorite will be Phil Mickelson. He was immensely popular at the 2002 Open at Bethpage and with the onset of his wife's cancer, he will become even more of a fan favorite. Look for Phil to play well and blow up like a cheap rubber somewhere between the 68th and 72nd holes. I honestly do not expect Woods to repeat this year, but his game does seem to be in good shape. And he does scare the piss out of most of the field so if he gets into the lead, most of the field will back away from him.

I don't have a good pick, though. Who in his right mind would have predicted that Rocco Mediate would take Woods to 91 holes? The Open is every bit as prone to surprise winners (Jack Fleck, anyone?) as the other majors so it's just not smart to make a call ahead of time.

I thought the weather for "The Open" is bad!
Not being allowed to clean the ball kind o sucks.

First Southerner to win since Curtis Strange. I wonder if David is really back or will he slip away again.

All I can say is that the frikken US Open made my travel extra difficult this past weekend. I'm a fucking clueless tourist when it comes to NYC, and I was still able to get around better than the dillweeds trying to get to Bethpage. And NYC had loads of signs, intercom messages, special trains, etc, and they were still clogging things up.
