So, it had been about 35 years since the last time I had read 1984 by George Orwell. I was re-reading it recently and I was noticing something disturbing.

In 1984, there is a mandated activity every citizen of Oceania must participate in daily. It’s called the Two Minute Hate.

Now, when I first read about the Two Minute Hate, I was just a teenager, and I’d never seen anything quite like what George Orwell described in the book. In the book, citizens were packed every day into a large stadium or auditorium of sorts, and they stared at a Jumbotron-style screen, whereupon they were presented with images of “Enemies of the People” at whom they were supposed to scream invective and become enraged. Chief among these “Enemies of the People” was Emmanuel Goldstein, a former high-ranking member of the Party, who at some point committed heresies like denouncing the dictatorship of the Party, demanding the immediate conclusion of peace with Eurasia, advocating freedom of speech, freedom of the Press, and freedom of assembly.

People would scream in furious anger at images of Goldstein and throw things at the screen. People would become red-faced with anger as they saw the “Enemy of the People” and fly into a murderous rage.

When I was a teenager, I had never seen anything quite like that. Our high school had pep rallies, but that was almost the exact opposite, where we stomped our feet, clapped our hands and cheered words of support for our high school football team.

Now, I’m a middle-aged man, and my collection of experiences is much larger. I’ve seen things now, and some of them closely parallel the Two Minute Hate Orwell referenced in his book.

Donald Trump’s hate-filled rallies where he’s railed against Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Jim Acosta, CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times and other “Enemies of the People” mirror Orwell’s Two Minute Hate so closely that it’s scary.

Ann Coulter, Alex Jones, Tucker Carlson and other right-wing extremists who spew venomous hate on Fox “news” Channel and other media outlets come close.

Domestic terrorist Cesar Sayoc mailed pipe bombs to Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Senator Kamala Harris, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, actor Robert De Niro, former U.S. President Barack Obama, former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as well as other public figures who have been critical of Donald Trump.

Much more recently, a group of right-wing terrorists who call themselves the Wolverine Watchmen plotted to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and ignite a “civil war”.

And more recently still, a group of armed criminals stalked a campaign bus that was in Texas to promote Joseph Biden’s candidacy. They used pickup trucks to box in the campaign bus and tried to force it off the road. They also rammed an SUV that was traveling with the campaign bus.

All of these incidents have at least one thing in common. Trump has repeatedly and publicly attacked the victims of these crimes, calling them things like “crooked” “tyrant”, “human scum”, and “an enemy of the American People.” Fox “news” and other right-wing media outlets have echoed Trump’s words and acted as accomplices in Trump’s hate mongering.

George Orwell’s book was supposed to be a warning. It was supposed to be a cautionary tale. However, right-wingers like Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones seem to think that it was an instruction manual. They’re copying techniques that Orwell warned us to be on guard against.

Thank you...1984 is something to re-read often. If your interested in another great book, the one that inspired Orwell to write 1984.check out

Zamyatin's "We".

It is amazing to me the far righttards who quote 1984 as inspirational to their activities, many of them, full bore Trumpians.

Yep, it was full on and on display for the last 4 years!

You have friends here...welcome aboard!!!

Of course. Lock her Up still gets them giddy with hate.

Also notice the invented reality that must bend to their will, fact be damned.

The almost funny (but actually scary) thing is a few of them will be here in short order spewing hate and screaming we got it backward, with vague, exaggerated and outright invented accusations that the other side are doing all that.

The Two Minutes Hate is a distillation of a common tactic of certain leaders, mostly in authoritarian nations. They focus attention on enemies, outsiders, foreigners and heretics — on those who seek to destroy society’s fabric.

It's cult-like in the way that it works. The sheer repetition of an accusation — against Emmanuel Goldstein, Hillary Clinton, Ilhan Omar, Muslims, immigrants or the press — can make it difficult not to feel, in some part of one’s mind, that the accusation is correct. The mindless chanting of words like, "LOCK HER UP" or "BUILD THAT WALL" or "SEND THEM BACK," carries people along on an emotional wave. It takes advantage of the herd mentality that all humans are subject to to some degree or another.

Trump acts very much like a cult leader, leading his followers in mindless chants and encouraging them to embrace a strict "us vs. them" mindset, where nobody who isn't "us" can be trusted about anything.

Using cult tactics to tell his followers what to think and who to hate has taken Trump further than I ever imagined he could go. He's programmed millions of Americans to hate the Kurds, the Ukrainians, Joseph Biden, Hunter Biden, the FBI, the CIA, the American Intelligence Community, NATO, American Free Press, the World Health Organization, Doctor Anthony Fauci, medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

Luckily, with Trump no longer in the White House and no longer in possession of his Twitter account, he's unable to communicate en masse with his followers.

Trump and his followers are still a threat, but they've become disorganized and lost cohesion. And some of them became disillusioned when Trump failed to join in on the assault on the Capitol and then refused to pardon the people who get arrested for assaulting the Capitol.

The scariest thing is that other right-wing extremists (like Marjorie Taylor Greene) might try to take Trump's place as the leader of the Trump cult.

The modern day 3 word political chants started with whom? That's right...Adolf Hitler. The apples don't fall far from the tree

The right will never recognize and acknowledge their inner hate monsters.

But we see them.......

So true. It's a collective hypnotic denial. They've projected it all onto "the left," and go genuinely blank when confronted.

Even before Trump, Fox News played essentially the same role. Some people have that crap on TV all day long, and even ten minutes or so of it is enough to see how some of our nutjobs here got the way they are.

Fox and Friends in the morning is hours of hate. The lies are never ending and every topic is picked to be more divisive than the last.

1984 is a social democratic lament of Stalinist Russia.

And Nazi Germany and Franco's Spain, which George Orwell (Eric Blair) saw for himself.

The ideology may be different. The tools for suppressing dissent are very similar.
