Taliban Say They Undermined U.S. Economy

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Afghanistan ruling Taliban movement has identified the root of the U.S. economic slowdown -- their leader Mullah Mohammad Omar's ban on opium poppy cultivation.

``What economic analysts will not tell you is that opium... was the main instigator of the economic miracle that (former U.S. president Bill) Clinton achieved,'' said an article in the latest edition of the Taliban's official magazine.

It said it was no coincidence the U.S. economy faltered as Omar banned poppy cultivation in Taliban-controlled areas in late 2000, sending prices soaring by reducing supply to the international drug trade after years of increasing output from Afghanistan.

Afghan production of opium -- refined into heroin, largely in other countries -- fell last year by 28 percent from the record 1999 production of 4,565 tonnes, three quarters of the world supply.

``It's known in select circles, spread over an extremely narrow area, that opium is more influential than oil in terms of its economic role in America in particular and the West as a whole,'' The Islamic Emirate magazine said.

``It's not a boulder in the mountain of global finance, no, it's fully one-half of the entire mountain,'' it said, concluding that the Taliban had triumphed in its struggle with the United States by undermining its economy.

oh my gawd that is good!

I'll have to remember that one for my next flame or rant!

Think he's a user?

He moves and speaks awefully slowly, like he's from Kansas, or on drugs, I mean he drones on and on in that monotone and listen and I grow sleepy and I want to go out and make day trades and dream of riches and wealth and uninflationary nonressesionistic times...

HEY!!! I Resemble That Remark...

Hey now AJ, you wanna watch what you say about Kansans...If it weren't for one house seat (unfortunately the one I live in), we'd be one of the most Republican states in the land...

Never a good idea to make generalities...remember one of the two most "Republican" Republican Presidents of the 20th Century was from Kansas...and his era is the one Republicans today are always accused of looking fondly upon...

"I Like Ike! I Like Ike! I Like Ike!..."

Just a little tweak of the nose *smile*, now quick get in the shelter...It's a twister, a twister I tell you....

Hey, I'm a Kansan! If I can't unload on the others, and I can't unload on me, whose left? :)

I am originally from the Democratic Free Republic of Wyandotte County/KCK and find it a hoot that the Democrat Represents Johnson County of all places. How'd dat happen?

How'd It Happen? You Ask

1) The Dem. had been a popular County Prosecutor at one time...so he had a foothold in Johnson Co. already.

2) The district was redrawn to include not only Johnson Co. and parts of Miami Co., Franklin Co., and a bit of Douglas Co. too (I think...but that could be wrong), but also added to the district was that very DFRWC/KCK where you used to live.

3) The candidates squared off evenly in their "strongholds", Wyandotte Co for the Dem. Johnson Co. for the Rep., but the deciding factors were now the votes from the more "rural" areas of the district, northern Miami and Franklin Counties, and Eastern Douglas Co....areas before that the Rep. candidates could write off because of the bloc of votes they were sure to get from Johnson Co.

4) *Hehehe...also gotta take my jabs when I can...* And in historic Democratic Machine Kansas City politics tradition, the precincts from Wyandotte Co didn't start coming in until after 99% off ALL OTHER precincts had reported...at which point the last Rep. candidate had a HUGE lead, but by 2:30 a.m. (when all honest folk were in bed) the Dem. had pushed ahead for good...

And, to his credit, became the first Dem. re-elected to any seat in the Kansas US Congressional Delegation in over 60 years.

5) AND...it just happened to be one of the most "nasty", mudslinging, negative campaigns in the 2000 Congressional Elections...which didn't help voter turnout.

And THAT'S some of the reasons why THAT happened...
