I could not believe I had been chosen to pitch the new marketing strategy to our most important clients. As I gathered the required materials from my desk and office files, my thoughts were a day ahead of me. Along with my chance to boost my career, I was also given the chance to visit old and dear friends who lived in Denver. Tom and Tami had been friends of mine since I first met him in school. He was a great teacher who had taken me under his wing and helped me not only pass all my art classes but learn an appreciation that would have gone totally undiscovered. I think he was disappointed that I had pursued my degree in business but he never let on. They had a son about my age so I tried very hard to not allow my success come between them. From the letters exchanged over the years, it appeared that their relationship with him had grown quite strained, I never commented on it in my replies. They also had a daughter, she was very young the only time I had seen her and I doubted she even remembered me. My only mind picture of her was the dark curly hair that peaked out of a book or the light eyes that shown from behind her mother’s leg the one time I was in her presence. I looked forward to renewing my friendship with them all.
The plane touched down with a jolt, waking me from a rare nap. I was surprised at my ability to actually fall asleep on the flight from Portland to Denver. After collecting my carryon and finding my way to the gate, I found Tami waiting there. A quick hug and we were off to her car. Tami had always been a very no nonsense woman and she immediately let me know the bad news. Tom needed to attend an out of town seminar and of course, with his limited physical ability, her presence was also required. They were leaving later that night and would be gone for the entire length of my visit. I immediately offered to stay in a downtown hotel for my business, but of course she would have none of that kind of talk. “You will have the house mostly to yourself, Jennifer will be there of course, but her schedule is very busy and I am sure privacy will not be a problem at all.” Jennifer was their daughter, I wondered what kind of woman she had grown up into as we made our way to the suburbs. I was of course disappointed that I was not going to be able to catch up with my dear friends but not having to deal with the hassle of a hotel was a welcome relief in my busy schedule. Less than an hour after arriving at the house, we were saying goodbye and they were off to the airport. Tami had given me the tour of the house and made sure I understood where all the essentials were, fresh towels, food, and of course the guest bedroom. I made a note as to the other rooms in the house, the study/computer room and of course Jennifer’s room. After unpacking and sitting in the study reviewing a few of the documents from my sales pitch, I heard the door and the sound of company. I decided to go reintroduce myself to Jennifer. I had heard her mother talking to her on the phone earlier, explaining who I was and that I would be staying at the house for several days while they were gone so I was certain my presence would not startle her. As I walked the hallway, I did not realize it would not be Jennifer that would be disturbed by our meeting.
