I know it's been done before, but anyways....

If you had to elect only

1.) three books to posess and read (ever again)
2.) three books to conserve for posterity
3.) three books to erase from all cultural/social/historical memory

What would be your choices? And why?

1.
o The Portable Atheist by Christopher Hitchens (compiler, essays by free thinkers about the importance living without God),
o The Stand (unabridged) by Stephen King (great book, and keeps me entertained for a week),
o The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein (the father of modern fantasy)

2.
o A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking (it answers many questions about the universe and is easily readable)
o The Bible (and the Torah and the Koran) (though I am not a believer, I think it is important to allow others the opportunity to believe)
o The Complete Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson (lessons on life are easier to swallow with humor)

3.
o Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler (I would erase every trace of that man's existence if given the opportunity)
o The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels ('nuff said)
o Quotations from Chairman Mao by Mao Zedong. (again, 'nuff said)

1. The Collected Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, Herodotus: The Complete Histories, The Collected Poems of Lord Byron

2. The Holy Bible, The Riverside Shakespeare, Milton's Paradise Lost

3. None
