the thing on the pier: why dont they get it

I'm thinking that maybe I understand it, but that doesn't mean I particularly like it.

After reading it, I felt much like the main character . . . just sitting in from of my computer screen mumbling "On the?"

exactly you did unders....
i didnt mind that no one liked the ending much. It was just that they couldn't understand the the ending was the ending place..

Sent you feedback.
I thought the ending was appropriate. Leaves the reader wanting more, but it's a good ending for what seems to be the beginning of a longer story. That may not be the case, but it makes a good launch pad for more.

The ending is like life and they just dont get it. ... Poor story got terrible votes lol... and I always thought it was my best...

The ending is like life and they just dont get it. ...

Yes, but that is the problem. People read stories to escape just that.

My cup runneth over with ordinary life...

point taken we read to escape life. i learned something resolve the issue completely. It is a good lesson for me..

The ending is the ending ...

Sometimes they just don't get it do they?

I've had only a few readers take me to task for having endings that werent's all happy and sweet. One anonymous reader told me that they got enough reality in their "suck ass life" and wanted to read something for an escape. It's great when the aims of the reader and writer coincide, but the writer is the one creating the imaginary universe and has the license to do what they want, even if it means leaving the reader hanging, begging, etc.

I thought the ending fit, but as I've learned don't expect the readers to accept it.

I read the story. It ended. I guess I don't understand your question about people not understanding the ending. What's there to not understand?

Really the ending was right for this story. Maybe you fixed it since you posted the question or something.

I liked the story - and the ending was obvious; there was no more writing after it.

I find that a lot of people need to have everything telegraphed to them all the time. Others choose to take what's in front of them and think it through themselves. For what it's worth, I liked thinking this one through. It brought to mind an old song by Blue Oyster Cult:

I'm feeling hungry, have another line
So faith is taken up
You raise your eyes say, "That's just like life,
There's never quite enough. There's just never quite enough."

It has the same quality: ethereal and mysterious.

i just finished the story "the thing on the pier" i enjoyed the ending as much as the rest of the story, and really couldn't see any other ending working as well as the one written.
it reminded me of the song,
Closing Time

(Album Feeling Strangely Fine)

...Closing time - time for you to go back to the places you will be from...Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end...

thank you all it restores my faith. I was asked to describe my style once. I said then and still say I am a writer who builds the frame. From the reader's own mind comes the picture. I still get feed back telling me it is not a story lol.

my only effing complaint is that song stuck in my head now.... <<hugs mystery writer>> :p
