"Astounding!", "Excellent!", "Superb!". His architectural designs had won him praise, admiration and wealth. But as he looked up at the vaulted ceiling, of the house he'd designed and built himself, he found himself filled with loneliness.

The people who surrounded him were different. To be honest he didn't even like them. What a condescending, uptight, arrogant bunch! Cheating and using others to achieve their great... status? Maybe in their minds..

A scene flashed through Davids mind and he sat up fast. How many of his "social" circle would even consider sticking up for another person? Another image flashed into his mind and he was moving. It was insanity, madness, but he was out the door so fast that he didn't have time to reconsider.

The cars engine burst to life. Sweat began to form on Davids face as he accelerated onto the freeway. The downtown was miles away but he was moving well over a hundred and he would be there in minutes. He had a problem, but it was his alone.

The dream tore at Teresa. She was running as fast as she could but she knew the men would catch her soon.

"Help me!" She pleaded. She knew he would come. He always came.

Teresa saw her reflection, in a store window, as she ran past. But the woman she saw was blonde. "But I'm a brunette?"

"You fucking cunt! You know you're only making things harder for yourself." a man ahead of her yelled out.

A blow from the side hit Teresa hard and pain travelled through her body as the sidewalk seemed to come up and hit her.

"Bitch.." The man on top of Teresa growled under his breath.

Teresa struggled under the man. She couldn't turn her head to see the man but she could see a third man approaching with a baseball bat. "Sorry, bitch but we're going to have to punish you."

Her head seemed to hum for a second.

"Whaa??!!! FUUUCCKK"

A blur hit the man knocking him into the side of a nearby building. His body seeming to crumple under the impact

POP POP Someone was firing a gun!

Teresa felt the weight lifted from her back. "FUUUUCKK!!!" POP POP POP!
A blur of motion passed her.. "Ahhhhhhhh!" A man cried out in pain. And it was over...

"Are you okay?" A familiar voice asked her.

"Yes.."

Teresa rolled over in her bed. Moonlight was filtering through the window. She fumbled for the light on her bedstand.

Maybe drawing action comics was a strange thing for a single woman... an elementary school teacher, to do during the middle of the night -- but she was possessed. She called him "The Guardian of the Pacific Coast".

"You really need to get out more often." Melinda shook her head. "You need a real man in your life, not some... imaginary comic book character."

"I've made good money with those comics."

Melinda sighed and looked up at the ceiling.

Teresa rolled her eyes,"Let me guess, you've found me another guy..".

"Don't worry, he's not like Jim, or Bob. I admit they were assholes. This guy is.. um.. different.."

"O-kay.." Teresa sighed.

"He's never been married. He makes a good income, and he's a real looker."

"Gay?" Teresa shook her head and rolled her eyes.

Melinda ignored her, "I met him at that big event downtown. He's an architect."

"Definitely gay!"

"Stop it! When I told him I had a single teacher friend he said he might be interested. He said that sometimes he wishes he'd gone into teaching instead of architecture. "

I'd like to be David. But I'm looking for somebody to roleplay Teresa.

"I can't believe you talked me into this,"

Teresa smoothed back her hair for the fifth time and took her keys back out of her purse. Sure, it was supposed to be low key, it was supposed to be a casual chance meeting with the guy Melinda had been raving about, but Teresa was nervous. Drinks downtown, sure it sounded easy enough, but Teresa was still twisting in indecision. She'd enver met this guy, knew next to nothing about him and yet here they were going to 'casually' run into each other on a Friday night out.

"You know...I have to work on the last panel of the new book and I have the syllabus for next term to work on. I should probably-"

"You should probably learn to have some fun before you become a spinster. Jesus Teresa when was the last time you had a date with a guy who worked in all three dimensions?"

A glare cut across to Melinda, and had the woman not been her best friend for the past few years she might have gotten a nasty comment right back. But, sad as she was to admit it, Melinda had a point and a very valid one. Her dating life had never been exactly a wild ride, and since she'd begun to pour herself into her writing, well real men seemed less and less real to her.

"Ok, so it's weird but come on, Guardian?Mel he's the perfect man. And I created him. He's smart and funny and strong and decent and good and....he cares. Guardian isn't the kind of guy that would stand you up because his buddies want to have a kegger."

"Or the type who would sleep with your yoga instructor?" Melinda countered with that unsavory bit of Teresa's past.

"Sure, or that. But you see what I mean right? After him all other men are...well..." Teresa shrugged at a loss for how to complete that. She was stuck on this sort-of-blind date now and there was no getting out of it. She might as well resign herself to having a good time. And who knew, maybe it would provide good background fodder for Guardian.

A final touch of the dark auburn locks as they were twisted neatly up in a loose updo, wide clear green eyes blinked slowly and steeled herself for what was to come. She dropped her keys back into her purse and took a deep breath, she looked good. Catching her reflection in the elevator doors before they parted, simple black dress, nice heels, modest make up. Was she too plain? Guardian would never think so, but he was not like other men, he could see into your soul. Jesus I am in love with a cartoon.

Teresa shook her head and stepped forward when the doors opened. "Ok Mel, you talked me into this, you buy the first round."
