Which story do you have here that people did not react to as well as you'd have liked. I know there might be more than one, but which one above all else, was judged lower than you'd hoped or even expected.

For me it's Lie Berries. This story has gotten very good response with the MC crowd elsewhere, but has only rated a 4.15 here. I'm not saying that's not fair, just below what I'd hoped.

I can live with -- okay, I can live with any score -- but my lowest rated story (3.94 for Season of The Witch) doesn't surprise me nearly as much. I don't fixate on scores, but when I check I always think, "Hmmmm, wonder why that one didn't do better."

On the other hand, that Wrapped is my highest rated score( at 4.81) also surprises me. I liked the story when I wrote it, but I never considered it my best. I think the romance catagory helped.

For me it was Lunchtime Yeah, it has an H but barely, and only nineteen votes. It's just a short piece of smut, but it ain't that bad.

At the other end was Abyss. I was pleased but not entirely happy with it when I submitted. I still get giddy with the accolades it's received.

I can't imagine not being happy with it. Hey, want to have me claim credit for it? I'll be more than happy to do so. ;)

Nah, that's OK. I'll take my giddy joy where I can get it.

Advent Calendar didn't do near as well as I thought it would...
Lost Souls did way better than I thought it would...

the reading public is fickle, go figure!

The first time I submitted "Twenty Years to Life", it didn't get enough reads or votes to even qualify for an H. I resubmitted it under a different category and it did better.

My "Run" series did much better than I expected, particularly considering some of the somber subject matter.

Well, okay, but the offer is still there!

I think it does have to do with finding the right audience at the right time. Sometimes it takes a while. I have friends who've known me forever who tell me they didn't read a story of mine 'cause the premise did not work for them, but loved it when they finally did. And again, these are friends!

Possession sits at a 4.59, and although I'm not complaining a bit, I consider it one of my best stories (won in Halloween '04), yet it has one of my lowest scores - not counting my essays. Those have fairly abysmal scores. :D

Latest ones are doing as I hoped.
Well, better than I hoped.

It does depend where you post them.

Thanks to Vampy,Evil and Shanglan.

I guess I have two as well for entirely different reasons.

Last Christmas did far better than I would have anticipated because of the subject matter and general tone of the story. It was one of those 'How I eel at the time' kind of stories and only took about an hour to write the first draft. I figured it would be destroyed in voting. Since the contest ended (and the troll voting by and large), it has remained remarkably consistant.

My 'regular' stuff is an ongoing 'Novels and Novellas' piece, that is not geared entirely toward sex. One chapter that I would consider crucial to the entire story only rose enough to get an 'H" recently. Is has consistantly remained the 'tail end' of the entire series, which is baffling to me as it is most 'story component' dense of all. You might be tempted to think it was a lack of sex in the chapter but there are others doing much, much better that have no sex in them either.
IMHO

"Sweetness and Servitude" continually amazed me with the positive feedback it got. I really never thought it was that good.

"The Private Diary of Alexander Pope" has one of my lowest scores. I think it's one of my best pieces. Evidently the world and I are in some disagreement on this topic. :D

The E for "Will" floored me. One of the happiest moments of my life. I think it's some of my best work, but I was very worried about that story. There are so many ways it can be read wrongly, and if read wrongly it's so antithetical to my own nature and ethics, that I hesistated a very long time before posting it. It's been a gratifying and immense relief that people have read it as I meant it.

Fantasy Nights. The scores are good on it, but not my best. It's the feedback that floored me, though. I consider it my best work (with the exception of what I'm working on at the moment), but I got some really nasty comments on it, basically because the husband doesn't get to fuck the other woman in the ffm. Whatever. I like it, anyway. :)

Will, is damned good. Both as a storyand as literature. Stop being mazed at your ability and put at least some of the doubts to rest.

Irish eyes continues to be one of my more puzzleing works. I think it is one of my best, in theme and character if not in my actual mastery or technique at the time.

Bets is my all time surprise for a high rateing. It was an exercise in using flashback, but people just seem to love it :)

Oh dear, you violated the Great Conventions.

I think that many of our readers have gleaned their theories on sex from mainstream porn films, which have conventions so ingrained that they are generally rules. Thus:

All ffm three-ways must include male+ f 1, male +f 2, f 1 + f 2 (never as the final act - only as a prelude to male participation), and male +f 1 + f 2 with all female attention focused on male.

Please consult your handbook for further rules. I was dinged for gratuitous violation of the "oral sex is an appetizer and never a main course" rule.

Heads off to rewrite chapter 5.

Untouchable Fate (in my sig.) is one which has disappointed me a bit. It's kind of special to me but doesn't even have an H. Not enough reads either.

On the other hand, my attempts at the Zodiac Girls chain are not better than some of the authors who participated in the chain. Doc, for one. Both of us wrote two chapters for the chain. Mine are rated higher than his. Totally undeserved and embarrassing and so wrong. Elizabetht's chapter was also great...

You'll have an H once I read it. ;)

My disappointment in the reads is with the fifth installment of my Immortal Sin. I had much feedback in interest in the novel throughout the year then post. Nada. Not even 10 votes yet. I guess my writer's block and procastinating caught up with me or I just suck.

Every now and then I go out on a bit of a limb and start a story by being very annoying. I have two intentions in this. This first is to set a mood so that later in the story I can pull the rug out from beneath the reader by going totally against the grain. The second is just to be annoying.

That's the theory, anyway. In the last year I tried this twice. The problem with this method of writing is you take the chance of turning off the reader so much that he becomes disgusted, skips to the end, votes "1" and gives you the boot.

This story, Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda generated a lot of hate mail because of the opening of the story. Most people hated it. But those that persevered past the beginning felt it was pretty good. Still, it's by far my lowest scoring story.

This story What is and What Should Never be wasn't quite as offensive at its outset, so a few more people stayed with it. But I still think it was a far better story than the score indicates.

The Touch of Her Thigh

When your Romance category, Nude Day contest entry winds up with a 4.26 score, surely one of the lowest in that category's history, even though it was, with minor alterations, later accepted by a literary e-zine, you know it's not your day, or contest.

Colleen, of course, is not permitted to doubt. Faith is only required in the absence of evidence; Colleen's work is evidence such that no reasonable person could deny it.
