2 paragraphs off finishing a minor epic.
It wouldn't save.
It crashed.
The recovery document is 100s of rows of "??????????" plus the last 2 senteces I wrote.
Fuck it.
Breathe.

I'm so sorry. Same thing happened to me once. :rose:

I had that happen to three classes' worth of notes this semester.

Count your blessings. :) Still sucks, though, so you've my sympathies anyway.

(I always save stuff to my gmail as drafts; I've found that's reliable.)

The curse of computers and stupid me for not having a back-up.

I'm breathing. I'm taking it better than I thought. Fucked if I am writing it again. It's gone.

Fc - Using someone else's notes is just not the same.
Thanks Maggot

I'm using Googledocs right now-- http://***************/ It runs a little slow with my slow processor, but it doesn't crash... You can invite collaborators, too, if you want to or need to...

I lost my USB Memory stick once which had all my stories on it, some of which were not saved onto my hard drive. However, nothing compares to the time I lost all the data on my Playstation 2 memory cards. 100's of hours of gameplay lost in a split second.

I have experienced this pain too... like you, I decided to let it go and move on to something better. :rose:

(is it crazy that for me, the best thing about writing is the idea that the next thing I write may be perfect?)

Ouch! :rose:

I would have replied sooner, but I was busy frantically emailing myself copies of everything I've written since my last backup.

Oww. It hurts when it happens.

I've had that a few times with Word. If Word wont save it, the copy command usually works, try copy and save to a plain vanilla textedit programme - TextEdit on a mac, not sure what it is on a PC. You lose any formatting but saves the text. If copy works, you sometimes can find the file on the Word clip board - open a new .doc page and paste, it has surprisingly worked a couple of times. Word sometimes dumps files it can't deal with (by not saving) in Microsoft User Data on your hard disk. The lost file has an unrecognisable title, might be worth looking. :rose:

I'm not a geek so I'm just guessing. It sounds like because it's saved something at least, what it is missing is the key to what the characters are.

How this is relevant or usable is a matter for someone who knows more than just how to post on a thread.
