I am just wondering if there is a proper Etiquette to the boards. When you see a story that doesn't say 'closed' or 'private' or 'secluded'. Nor anywhere in the first post does it say that this is an Closed thread should you post? Or should you PM the person who started the thread to ask permission to post?

Etiquette is tricky

Hey sweetie,

As a relative newcomer to the world of RPG (who has no doubt stepped on some toes), I'm more a fan of the cautious "pm first" approach. Even then, I don't always get it right.

I don't know if there's any etiquette set in stone, other than Hecate's guide. The actual forum guidelines are fairly unrestrictive and deal more with being over 18 and not spamming everyone to death with advertisements or rigging your posts to blast music.

But since it can be hard to "read" people in a virtual environment, I tend to pm first -- better safe than sorry.

But that's just MH2C. :D

Cheers,
AriO

I'd suggest posting to the story presenting the character concept as an OOC post so all in the story can see and read it and a consensus can be gotten.
That way, if invited to join in, you'd know that all have had a chance to see your character and hopefully offer an opinion via PM or OOC. If invited it should be a warm and welcome one that way.
Tis why I voted just post w/o asking, the OOC way rather than just barging into the story.

I voted for PMing the thread starter. Sometimes just "barging in" on an existing story has detrimental effects if you aren't of the same mindset as the other players involved. But that's just my own 2¢ worth. ;)

I see your point, PP -- however I find OOC's in a main thread distracting to the story flow. As an occasional thread starter, I do like an OOC thread to accompany my main and in lieu of that would far prefer to have a character description sent to myself so that discussion (if need be) can be done in private.

I see you point MM; however, especially in long stories, sometimes the starter isn't active in it any longer for whatever reason that's why I suggested the OOC way.

Now an accompanying OOC story thread is a perfect solution to use for joining in or any questions, etc about the storyline..

That is as long as someone keeps 'bumping' it so it doesn't get lost in the back pages where no one knows it exists, or its been forgotten about it if it isn't used frequently.

Now see as my own P.O. I dont' think we should palce two psots about the same story, only because that is space that could be used for another story. I may be wrong but I don't think the 'owner', 'moderator' or whatever the person is that runs the WHOLE thing is called gets unlimited space for the BBS. I might be wrong. also I am looking at the lag factor. We have all expreienced it as well. Wether it is a ton of people on then the server has to look longer through all the boards you are trying to post to. I voted for PMing first.

Laaaaaaagggggg timmmmmmme whatttttttt doooooo youuuu meannnnn by laaaaaaag timmmmmmme? *L

Tons o' flavors

What seems to becoming clear is that it all depends on the situation. PPO1 raised a point I hadn't considered, which is the existence of older threads where the personnel has entirely changed (and then who the heck do you pm?). So, sometimes a pm might be the way to smooth your entry, other times it's a free-form dive-right-in kind of party...let your Spidey sense guide you.

It looks like you just need to go on gut instinct and be prepared for the fact that no matter how good your intentions, you're going to make the inevitable faux-pas here and there. But you're an amiable and outgoing gal, Destind -- I can't see any feathers staying ruffled for too long ;) :D

Cheers,
AriO

Thanks AriO...it is just I PM'd someone I wanted to RP with in a thread that they had posted...instead of jumping in..and someone else jumped in instead. I was just curious if it was Dumb on my part or bad ettiquette on thiers.

And no I am not pointing fingers.

I've had it happen to me too and probably done it myself. As there's no set way to do it, it's just a crap shoot and as Ari said gut instinct and Spidey sense time and go for it whichever feels right at the time.

Pming ... or not ...?

Been following the debate - I voted to PM first.

Even if you lose out, at least it's good manners ... BUT ... I have jumped in aswell ... !
I too have missed out by PMing, being accepted and then someone else jumped in and posted straight away!

In that case what do you do?

The thread starter was going to ask the "postee" to edit themselves out, but I felt too bad about that so let her take the role promising the originator I'd write with him some other time ... !

My loss ... but for me that was the right way to deal with it.

One idea though ... since then ... If I'm really interested in a thread I post and OOC comment stating something like:

Great idea. PM on the way to you. Good luck!

It makes no assumptions, or demands, but notifies the thread starter AND other readers of your interest!

Just my lil' comments.

But fox paws are furry and cuddly!

Aren't they? Hmm...maybe I'm confusing them with tiger paws...Is a puzzlement...

Destind, I sympathize with you, and hope that the originator of the thread made you a gracious offer to create an opportunity for another character in the thread so that maybe you could join at a later date. But yeah, that's the breaks. I'm no Emily Post, but I think you were fully within the parameters of good etiquette in touching base with the originator first. And it wasn't dumb -- you're like one of those lovely people on the freeway who actually leaves room for someone else to switch lanes. Unfortunately, it means you lost out this time......but hey, s'pose you could start your own thread along similar lines, yeah? After all, I don't see any rules around here against starting a thread that's similar to an existing one....

Banzai, baby!

Cheers,
AriO

^5 for DM.
Sounds like the perfect compromise. A very short OOC letting who ever is starting a story know that you're interested and a PM is forthcoming.

As the Aussies would say "Good on ya DM. " great solution for new stories.

*blushes*

Why thank you ... just something that's worked for me ...

AriO is so delicious isn't she:)?

Actually I already have so many posts I dont' know which way to turn...They are all well read as I can tell by the times they are taken a look at. I can't help but be flattered by the receptions I have gotten here.

DM that is a wonderful way to do things and I think I will start doing that.

But evry please keep voting I would like to see a majority on this one and see how it comes out:)

I will keep bumping it til the end of next week to see the rsults:) if no one else does;)

Awwwwww goshhhhh, yer sooo cute when ya blush like that. *S

PM first.

I agree with the lot of you. I would always PM, or at least ask permission to play, if there is an OOC. And would never post without a reply from the originator.

Isn’t that right DM?

* smooooch Gray!*

You are oh-so-right!

Always nice to ask first, I think ... and sooo nice to see you on the boards hun!

::sm:kiss: oo:kiss: ch ::

Take care hun!

However, Greybeard and DM, what do you do if the story starter isn't involved any longer?

BTW, to digress, does anyone know what posts can't be deleted by those who posted them? I've tried numerous times and all I get is I'm not allowed saying I'm not authorized to delete.

IMHO, then it is free game, but I would still ask those playing if I could join before jumping in.

Tnen we're in basic agreement alround it seems for that would mean an OOC post to the story itself .

GB, have you had any word on those in the slave story as yet? I haven't.

I don't know, I think I would still send a PM to somebody first. If no reply then post a OOC to the story.

And no, I've not heard from any of them. Now I am worried.

As I told you, I am too. They've never been out of contact this long before.
Some times they'd be off for awhile, but I always got a PM at least every few days or at the most a week or so and it's been far longer since I've hard from 'em now.
