The state should get out of the marriage business. Most religions don't believe your married in a civil service. The church is the real marriage to many. So I believe if this is all to get benifits and make it so your partner can make medical decisions for example it should be some paperwork you file with the state. How to prove it is a real "marriage" is difficult. Organized religion documents such things so it is easy to bring to the clerk at the government office. How to handle a gay union well I don't know.......but it is a start. Being a conservative I believe that this is best. The state shouldn't be involved in your relationships, but I understand there is a need to prevent fraud. Also to protect those like the underaged or unwilling is another reason why the state should ahve some involvement.

I think this stance should satisfy both sides of the issue. One side stays firm with its religious beliefs and the other gets the benifits it wants. I don't know of any reckonized gay marriage rituals, but perhaps they need to be sanctioned. The state shouldn't care on you paper work whether your marriage is blessed by God or Satan long as it is commitment to each other. Call everyone life partner on the form for all I care. I know when and if I get married who my wife is and what she means to me and that is all that is important. Otherwise is is just a box on a form and some less taxes as far as the state should be concern.

ok, nothing against anything you said, but couldn't this have been keep in the same thread it belongs to?

We did the city hall thing and it's a real marriage to me. We're both pretty much atheists. I don't feel like I need the kudos of an imaginary being to have a good marriage, be a moral person, or get on M's insurance.

I think the church needs to get out of the government business.
