ooc: This thread is lightly based on JMS's rising stars...

A small rural town of Missouri, population 2,037. Pine Crossing was always quiet, everyone knew everyone. Most of the men in town worked the coal mines, others worked the corn and wheat fields. The Town was suprisingly a booming banking district. And then of course there was the government training facility about 2 miles from the outskirts of town.

And then it happened, the night the stars fell..whole crops were lost, some familes lost loved ones...it took the town 3 days to put out the last of the flames....and then there were the 15.

They were isolated in the IC ward of the hospital...15 seniors, all struck by a star in the library that now lay in ashes. They were a study group, preparing for finals. Something has changed about them and strange events continue to plague the hospital that can only be attributed to the unknown and unseen. It took the first one 30 days to wake up...

“Where am I?” the teenager asked...

“Youre with the others son...youre with the Specials”....

think of any revisions to the plot/storyline, let me know..

Four days after Bo woke up, another of the students opened her eyes. She lay there in the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling for a few moments as she tried to gain her bearings. With a deep breath of realization that she was not in the place she last remembered being, she sat up. The IV in her arm tugged, eliciting a cry from her.

Someone came rushing into the room, a nurse, who almost looked surprised. Jessica didn't pretend to know why. "Another one is awake!" The nurse shouted down the hall. The echo of footsteps coming down the hall was the response.

"Where am I?" Jessica asked the nurse.

The woman just shook her head and told her, "You'll find out soon enough."

Third to come to

A little later that day, another of the young men started to stir. Eventually opening his green eyes and looking around as he lay still, trying to get his bearings, trying to remember how he came to be here. Turning his head he sees friends and acquaintances in adjoining beds, glad to see that they are alive, but uncertain about anything else.

When he hears a nurse enter the room, he lifts his head, clearing his throat and startling her into dropping the vials she carries. As he thinks that they shouldn't hit the floor like that, he's amazed to find that they stop falling, levitating back up to her hands. Shaking his head a bit, wondering what was going on, he struggles to sit up. She rushes over to him, checking his machines, checking his IVs. "Really, I think I'm OK," he says. "What happened?"

"all in due time," she tells him, "all in due time."

Cheree's eyes snapped open and she sat straight up in bed. "Where am I? What happened" She blurted out loudly before anyone had time to react.

A nurse rushed over to her bedside. "Sh, lay back, it's fine. Someone will be in to explain later."

Cheree laid back down, only now realising that she had machines and tubes attached to her body. Her gaze shifted around the room as she looked at the others around her.

Samael

He jerked awake. His eyes scanned his surroundings franticly. A hospital room! A little dark, like the lights couldn’t keep up with illuminating the room.

“Wha-! Where-!” He swallowed hard. It hurt.
“Shh. Just relax. You’re all right now.”
The nurse looked young. She had a kindness about her.

He scowled at her. “I don’t feel all right.” His voice held an edge, like a saw. Years of being ‘the freak’ to everyone in school making it that way automatically. Goths generally weren’t liked at that school.

“Just lay back. Someone will explain everything to you soon.” The nurse’s voice was gentle and she was smiling a bit.

He slowly lay back his suspicious eyes on her the whole time. He didn’t like her. She was too… happy… for his taste. Too bubbly. Something was up.

Name: Nick Bender / Samael
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 180 lbs.
Hair: Dark brown, slight waves, down to his shoulders
Eyes: Brown (Coffee)
Ability: Able to manipulate shadows and light. Able to rip body heat from other living beings to the point of extreme hypothermia, power works both ways, as he is also able to restore body heat.

The boy's eyes opened.

He took in the hospital scene around him, the other beds, the IV tubes attached to his body, without blinking, without his expression changing. The nurse on duty, fiddling with one of the other newly awakened student's feedlines, smiled at him.

"I expect you're worried, dear"

"No", the boy said, his tone distant and emotionless. "No, I'm not"

Because of it he is able to remember and keep track of all information that comes in as well as make decisions based on it better than anyone.

My sight still a bit hazy, i look around. Not really sure what to make of anything as this middle age women begins to record my vitals..

I can see Jess, Al, and Alexis in nearby beds...we all look a little banged up.

My mind a little cloudly, IV tubes running into my wrist, I think to myself this place looks a little to nice to be the local hospital in the 'Cross'..

Through doors at the end of the hall, I see men in military uniforms...but I dont have my glasses on...How in the world could I ever see them from here??

The boy let his gaze move over the hospital room.

"This can't be right"

The boy looked down, to where the nurse was looking at a read-out of his vitals.

"You're giving off no body-heat at all. In fact...", she felt the cold end of the stethoscope, and shivered, "You're radiating cold"

"Don't worry about it". The voice came from the entrance, where a grey-haired man in miltary uniform stood silhouetted. "You were told to expect... anomalies in the patients. This is one of them"

"But with a body-temperature like this, he shouldn't even be alive!"

For the first time since the scans began, the boy spoke:

"Should any of us?"

He returned his gaze to the room.

Jessica

Jessica remained sitting up in her bed, as her eyes shifted around the familiar faces of some of her classmates. She looked at the nurse tending to her with her brows knotted in confusion.

"What did you say?" Jessica's voice rose a pitch, as if she were frightened.

The nurse's eyes grew wider as she shooked her head and answered, "I didn't say anything."

Jessica looked at Jamie when he posed the question if any of them should be alive. She had a strange feeling that they had survived something quite amazing, and perhaps should be dead.

"What happened?" She asked, the question directed at anyone that might have an answer.

Alexis

OOC: So all we need is one more girl then?

IC:
Alexis finally opened her eyes when she heard the nurse making a big fuss over Jamie's temperature. She groaned a bit as she sat up in the bed. Her body felt stiff, like her muscles hadn't been used for quite some time. How long had she been sleeping? Last thing she remembered was studying for finals in the library.

She wasn't too worried about Jamie. He seemed fine enough, the silly woman had probably just read the thing wrong... but then the man in the military uniform spoke.

"Don't worry about it... You were told to expect... anomalies in the patients. This is one of them"

"What the hell do you mean by anomalies!?!" she questioned.

"What happened?" she heard Jessica ask in the bed next to her.

"I don't know," she replied, "But something tells me he does."

Her eyes narrowed on the military man, and unknown to Alexis... the fluids in her IV slowly began to boil.

His eyes had not opened yet, no, it was way too early for that. He was merely an inch out of that cold state of dark nothingness that the accident has submerged him into.

His head was cloudy, as it always is when a person comes out of unconsciousness. It starts off almost at a standstill, all cognitive processes dimmed almost to a nil, all consciousness of oneself absent - nothing but a complicated shell that supports itself at a primitive with no higher guidance. Then, like a car taking off from the street light, it starts to accellerate. The clouds begin to clear; it is suddenly apparent and certain that what is going on, what he is feeling is solid reality, that 'he' is an entity, and 'he' is in control. It is no longer a dream, it is he, Al Cox laying. Laying where? A soft, rather unfamiliar bed. Hospital, perhaps? The smell. The tiny, almost unnoticable aromas of medication, of isopropilic alcohol. Yes, hospital. How... The ambulance. His body holds faint, but definite traces of pressure the ambulances' stretcher applied. He knows it is unique to that ambulance. 09531. Blue Ridge County. A clear and vivid image of the ID card he had seen earlier is recalled. Latino, redhead, cute, clear facial lines, small nose, brown eyes, little makeup. Maria Santos, Paramedic, Blue Ridge County Hospital. Then another one: James Baker, Medical Specialist, United States Army. Army?! Why?

The answer to that snaps up to mind immediately, just like the answers to all other questions. Having started off at a near standstill, like everyone else's, Alfred's mind accellerates further and further, shifting into higher gears long after everyone else's would have already reached capacity. He wonders questions, and instantly works out answers to the questions he can. For those he cannot, Alfred knows for certain there is no answer from the facts he knows. He knows he needs to search more. The one that bothers him most is: what exactly had happened? How did he get to be so smart when not so long ago he had to work hard to maintain an A- average?

Finally, he opens his eyes. A wealth of new information invades his brain, and Alf is taken back, but his mind roars like the engine of a powerful racing car, and churns through it all with ease. He registers his friends in the room. All breathing, some conscious - he knows by the subtle movements of their eyes under the eyelids. There is an array of medical gadgets in the corner. The topmost one in a blue casing... He doesn't know what it is, there is not enough information to tell, but he knows it has a display and that display consists of exactly fourty nine LED segments organized into seven numbers. The middle LED on the second number from the right is out of order. "Texas Instruments" graces the front of the machine, and the capital "I" is missing a tiny piece where the paint had been scratched off. By the doorframe. The very doorframe that leads into this room. Those are all things an observant man would be able to note and tell, given this task, and enough time, but Alf knew it all within a twentieth of a second after he opened his eyes - it was exactly how long it took for the full image to reach his brain from his eyes.

The smell, the temperature, the humidity, the color of tiniest little objects, the exact number and shape of countless cracks (9478 of them) in the ceiling, all of those he knew and could reproduce with percision and accuracy limited only by the sensitivity of his eyes.

For a moment, Alf got scared of his own mind's power. He tried to swallow insinctively, but found his throat dry and sat up, falling into a dry cough.

Leaning up against the wall behind me, nurses taking reading of my friends around me, I just couldn't make things add up. How did this all happen? Was there an accident? I feel like I haven't had something to eat in years. Rubbing my hands together, sliding them down my stomach I can feel tighten muscles where fat once was. The sensation as if though I'm floating inches above the matress. Must be the lack of food and pain meds..

Looking down the row of beds I see Alf stirring...I know he's trying to figure things out...his cough wakes a few others around him. Everyone looks a little confused, and a little scared. Where are our parents?? Why wont they tell us what's wrong??

Turning my head over towards Jess, I see her crying...unable to get any words out, in complete utter shock..cant break my stare....whispering as though it hurts to talk, "Jess, you're skin...it's as white as those sheets"...

"You should see yourself", she replies, tears streaming down her face.."Bo, how are you doing that??"...my body floating inches off the matress.

Alf's involuntary cough ended, finally, and he regained composure of himself. Two quick glances and he knew exactly what was going on in any corner of the room.

Jess was nearly unnoticable over those bedsheets - even her eyes and lips turned near-white. Bo was levitating. Is was obvious both were the results of whatever had happened to them all, just like, probably, his own hightened smarts were. Perhaps their cognitive funcions have been boosted as well? No. The next few moments revealed. Both were very slowly coming to grips with what was going on and acted just like he would have expected his old buddies Bo and Jess to act. Perhaps Alf himself had some other abilities that were altered? No again. A quick but exhaustive test of his most important bodily functions found all of them funcioning normally. Except the brain. He was like an average-Joe's car with a fighter-jet-like engine stuffed into it. Freak.

'Well, fuck those 'normal' ones who might dislike me, then!' He lashed out at his quick realization. He knew he could outwit any of them, and come out on top. Especially if he and his friends stuck together and complimented each other's abilities. He leaned over and called in a quiet very hoarse and dry voice.

"Bo, Jess, guys." He made sure beforehand that nobody of the medical staff was near enough to hear them. "Test your abilities quickly and learn to control them. We don't know what they want with us and we might not have much time. Best if we can break out if they try to hurt us. We stick together and look out for each other. Right?"

Looking into Jess' eyes, barely able to see a hint of green left, a puzzled look came to our faces...It was as if we could hear Alf in our heads from across the room..How could he be talking to us, yet nobody else heard him??

Looking down the way, I could see Nick, Jeff, Cheree, and Jamie begin to stir..

Nurses were rushing to Alexis' side, doctors starting coming in from side doors...All I could hear were frantic mumblings..

The machine recording her temperature must have been malfunctioning..It just wouldn't stop rising.."It must be some severe fever," I could one of the doctors say..

Her IV's appeared to be boiling and an orangish/blue hue glistened from her skin...

"What the hell is going on Alf??...break out?? break out of what?? We're in hospital not a prison..Alexis looks really sick, and hell Jamie looks like he is turning blue!...Something is not right, maybe one of us should say something..."

Alf sighed internally. It would take getting used to, before he will be able to live with the fact that others didn't think nearly as quickly as he did. He would have to learn to put things to others broken down into chunks a normal brain can make connections with.

"Military hospital, Bo. Guards in camo with M16s. There aren't any around our town, yet we are certainly there. Look at the footprints on the floor - exact same dirt color as we have around school. They came here for us and did something to us."

He took a brief break, letting the quick, concise words sink in.

"We have all been modified somehow. I don't know how they did it, or if it was them, but we all seem to have paranormal abilities. Now, guys, until they prove otherwise, we can't trust these people, so I suggest you figure out what your new knack is and learn to use it. You may need it if they, say, suddenly decide to 'terminate' the project."

The man in the military uniform never did answer her question. Instead Alexis soon found herself surrounded by medical staff. All of them raving about a fever of some sort, her temperature was too high.

"But I feel fine!" she protested as they swarmed around her.

It was then that she noticed the fluid in her IVs.

"What the fu.."

The library. Something had happened to all of them at the library while they were studying. It was there, just out of reach in the far corners of her mind... Well it sure as hell didn't take a genius to figure out what her 'knack' was. She was begining to grow sick of all the IVs and monitors attatched to her, as well as all of the people buzzing around her. Across the room sat a small paper filled waste basket.

Perfect she thought to herself.

Focusing all of her attention on it, she noticed a small trail of smoke drift up before the entire thing burst into flames.

"Fire!" someone shouted, and all of the people that had been crowding around her now rushed off in search of a fire estinguisher.

A pleased smile on her face Alexis used the oportunity to pull the IVs from her arm, and disconnect herself from all the monitors. Sliding out of the bed she stretched her arms above her head, not even caring at the moment that all she wore was a paper hospital gown.

"Much better." she mumbled to herself.

Jamie looked at the panic surrounding the fire, the expression of absolute cold calm never leaving his face. The blaze was near him, but he felt no heat at all, nothing but a numbing, bone-deep cold. And that fact should have worried him, but he felt nothing at all.

Seeing how Alexis had done what she did, he experimentally squeezed his eyes shut and tried to let some of the cold out at the fire. The blazing fire suddenly began to smoulder and then choke off, abruptly dying into cold ashes, lined with a tiny sprinkling of frost.

Jamie still felt nothing.

Jessica hadn't realized at first why Alf and Bo were looking at her so funny, or what Bo meant when she said he was white as a sheet. She looked at herself, her arms, not really noticing anything out of the ordinary at first, but then, when she realized that she really was as white as the sheet, her heart began pounding.

It pounded so loud, in fact, that the constant thud of it flooded her ears, drowning out the voices of everyone else in the room. She looked across all of the faces, her friends, the hospital staff...the guards outside the doors, and suddenly she was pulling herself free of machines.

Tears spilled down her face as she tored herself away from the bed and made for the doorway. With the fire suddenly having caught everyone's attention, and her own skin still unnaturally white, which allowed her to blend in with the walls, the only thing that gave her away was the light blue hospital gown.

Cheree watched as a small fire broke out then faded just as quickly. She had been listening to the conversations going on around her. Her vision began to swim as she noticed how many people were actually in the room. She stood and ripped everything from her body that shouldn't be there and made her way to the window. It only opened about five inches. "Damnit! I need AIR!" She yelled, close to panic. Strong wind began to blow through the small gap in the window. Cheree's hospital gown billowed out behind her as the wind blew into the room.

"Someone close that window. Get her back into bed."

"No." Cheree called as she watched nurses running for her. The wind became stronger, holding them at bay for now.

Nick "Samael" Bender

Nick looked around at all the people in the room.
Bo was floating a few inches above his bed! He blinked a few times, shook his head to clear the cobwebs and then looked again. Yup! Bo was floating all right! Weird!
Jamie… Well, Jamie was practically turning blue and Alexis… Well, she’d been ‘hot’ before… But this was ridiculous! The fluids in her IV were boiling, for Christ’s sake!

And Jessica… Nick could list the number of people he liked in that god forsaken school, really truly liked, using the fingers on one hand, and Jessica was one of them. They’d been partnered up together a few times for various class assignments. She didn’t treat him like a cockroach that needed to be squished. She’d smiled at him and said ‘Hi’ to him in the halls. Her friends probably gave her crap for it, he didn’t know, but Nick really appreciated it. He always liked to see her smile, it tended to rub off on him and soon he’d find himself smiling too.

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. She was changing! Her skin was taking on the color of the wall behind her. She looked so frightened, like she was on the verge of panic. He felt the need to do something.

He started ridding himself of all the tubes and wires attached to his body as he gently called her name to try and get her attention. It wasn’t working. He pushed the covers away and got out of the bed. “Son,” a deep male voice called to him. “You need to stay in your bed.” Out of his peripheral vision he saw a large male orderly walking towards him. He could see Jessica almost fading away.

Everything happened at once. A fire started in the waste basket across the room and Cheree ran to the window screaming about needing air. And a panicked Jessica, or rather her hospital gown, bolted for the door! “Jessica! Wait!” Nick screamed as he took off after her. The hulking orderly intercepted him and got ready to grab him. “NO!!! DON’T TOUCH HIM!!!” The young nurse from earlier cried in alarm. The orderly’s massive hand clamped down on Nick’s upper arm like a vise, jerking it violently. Filled with frustration at being stopped and the pain in his arm, Nick whipped his head around to glare at the man.

A sudden rush of warmth filled him and seemed to settle in his chest, making him gasp and stagger slightly. The orderly’s eyes went impossibly large and the shocked look on his face was terrifying to say the least. His body went rigid and cold and he crashed to the ground.

“GET THE THERMAL RESTORATION KIT!! AND GET A CRASH CART IN HERE!! NOW!!!!” The young nurse’s screaming voice barked out orders like there was no tomorrow. Medical personel started pouring into the room with all sorts of equipment and got busy trying to help the man.

Nick was stunned. What the hell had just happened? Did… Did he do that? He looked at his upper arm in shock before looking at the man again. His hand went to his chest, the warmth was still there, just lingering. He could swear he heard the hammer of a gun being cocked, but he couldn’t move. He just stood there, rooted to the floor, his eyes locked on the man on the floor. He heard the young nurse use a word that stuck in his head. ‘Hypothermia’.

“My god.” His trembling voice was barely audible. “What did I do?”

Jessica

Jessica had just about made it to the doors when she was stopped by the voice of a very urgent Nick shouting for her to wait. Her natural reaction was to stop, of course and turn around, which is exactly what she did. He was rushing toward her, ready to take the role of her getaway associate, but was stopped by one of the orderlies.

She watched in shock as the man grabbed him and then, in the blink of an eye, collapsed on the ground. The place was in an uproar -- a picture of utter and total chaos. Jessica didn't know which end was up.

She looked to Nick again as if pleading him to come on, but it was obvious none of them were going anywhere any time soon. Just as the nurse shouted for help, the doors swung open behind her, giving way to several other doctors and nurses, as well as armed military guards.

Jessica pressed herself up against the wall, and while she probably could have made it out the door, she was too afraid to move. Instead she slid down the wall until her ass touched the cool tile floor and curled her arms around her legs, watching the happenings in the room with a total sense of displacement and disbelief.
