Captain.S.Karess: Report to me.
Echo-5: Distress Signal activated, 500,000 starkilometers away.
Captain.S.Karess: What is the nature of the distress signal?
Echo-5: Engine Failure.
Captain.S.Karess: A Commonwealth ship?
Echo-5: Processing...Please wait. (7 second pause). Negative.
Captain.S.Karess: Go to full speed, and prepare the Silhouette for boarding operations.
The Silhouette is a ship unlike any other. Shaped like a dagger, and the colour of darkest obsidian it blends in with space around it leaving only a silhouette amongst the stars, thus earning its namesake. Like the predator sharks of old Earth, it moves silently towards its target that is “dead in the water” so to speak. The craft begins to slow down as it closes in on the distressed transport craft, circling it like prey until eventually the smaller details of the ship are made it out in greater detail. A couple of view ports are visible, as well as a few blinking lights plus the sparking engine that had caused the malfunction.
Aboard the main deck of the Silhouette, Captain Karess watches an intensified image of the downed ship on a large 3D hologram projector that erupts from the centre of the room. The Captain was young for a man of his profession, barely in his late twenties and although devilishly handsome, still bore a scar or two from his dangerous profession. With a sleek face and well defined cheekbones, he bore the natural looks of Commonwealth highborn. Only a small scar below his right eye marred his near perfect features, the result of a duelling wound he had received when first starting as a slaver. His raven dark hair fell down to his shoulders, some small strands plaited together and kept bound by small silver circlets. He stood with his arms folded as he studied the holographic projection of the ship before him, wearing a floor length black trench coat. The Captain was not alone in the room.
“We're ready when you are Captain.” the voice said, the gravel like sound suggesting the speaker had abused himself with too many tobacco-sticks. Forrix was The Captains second in command, approaching and in his early 40's. Dressed in combat plating and nursing a shotgun in his arms, he couldn’t be any more different from his captain. Forrix was short and bulky with muscle, whilst Karess was tall and built like an athlete. His hair was also cut short to his head, the signs of an ex military man (A disgraced one at that).
“Good, then let us begin operations.” Karess said, with a clear and precise tone. He naturally exerted the authority of a high born. “Echo-5, Patch me through to the ship.”. The captain patiently waited for the confirmation to come from his ships AI speaker system built in the small domed ceiling above them.
Echo-5: Affirmative Captain, Processing open link now Captain, please stand-by....please stand-by. You are now on an open link Captain.
“Fellow travellers.” Karess quietly cleared his throat before continuing, knowing that the hidden micro-sensors in the room would easily pick up his voice. “We have received your distress signal and have come to aid you in whatever way possible. We will be boarding your ship in a matter of moments, please congregate at the entrance of your airlock so you can receive whatever aid is necessary. We are coming aboard unarmed, this is is Captain Karess, over and out.”
Echo-5: Link closed
The captain grinned at his second in command, showing a row of perfect teeth as he placed his hands behind his back. “Prepare the droids Forrix, we board them in five minutes”. Forrix gave an ugly grin as he loaded a crystalline-buckshot round into his weapon.
