In a conversation this afternoon with a friend, (who knows who he is ;) ) , the topic of ego came up. Both ends of the ego spectrum were discussed. The inflated ego (i.e. the shit) vs. the deflated ego (i.e. a shit).
Which got us thinking, which is worse? Which is better? Some one who thinks they are The Shit? Or someone who thinks they are a shit? Who would be less irritating to be around?
My answer would be someone who thought that they were The Shit, because I would not feel bad trying to knock them down a peg or two.
The ego, what a trip.

Confidence is sexy. But when someone thinks they are above and beyond us mere mortals, then it gets to be a little much.

a little much sexy?

okay, now I have strains of Right Said Fred singing "I'm too sexy for this shirt, so sexy it hurts!" running through my brain.

I find that the people who are overly worried about a man's ego usually don't think very much of themselves, and, frankly, I don't give A Shit about them.

I would say person who thinks they are The Shit would be less annoying. You don't have to give them much, just let them behave in their egotistical fashion.

Whereas the needy person would seem to need things from you, attention, reassurance, time and energy.

Sounds like an interesting conversation you had... *smile*

Often certain states of meditation are thought of as a process of letting go of one's ego. Becoming egoless. But meditation is transitory, though more and more enlightening the more you do it.

So what paths are there to that state of egolessness? I think one can go in both directions, i.e. "a shit" or "the shit." Now which of those would be more fun? *grin*

Moving on...

I think I'd rather have a conversation with someone that has an inflated ego rather than someone that has a deflated ego... barring that condition as just a temporary one. Someone living in the "a shit" as a way of life is not someone I'd want to be around.

Now as far as hanging around someone who thinks they're "the shit." I'd qualify that by saying that I would only be interested if they had at least some reason for that inflated ego. Someone who thinks they're "the shit" and has absolutely no cause to think that way is really "a shit" pretending to be "the shit."

I was also thinking that its quite interesting that a simple article can change the meanings of a phrase so dramatically...

a shit
the shit

Its all in the article and not in the shit.

Dilly as usual is full of insight - it's the meditation.

It's a bit difficult for me with the language problem. In scots the word is "shite" to rhyme with "Kite".

I think this makes a difference since it's not just in the article it's all in the vowels. - a bit like Viscaya and Biscaya - where it's in the consonants and so on.

Chacun a un shit à un moment donné ou des autres. Mais queest-ce que peuvent vraiment indiquer qu'elles sont le shit?

I swing between extremes. Medicine and therapy are helping though.

Les vraies shits sont elles qui collent, je vous assure.

We're going to get bollocked for this. It's ok to play with English - but the frogs'll have us.,. the merde will fly.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say:

"I am the american shit, non?"

doesn't exempt you from French bollockings, green eyed.

Riff oscillates between the shits. Is he a banana shit?

Could you perhaps expand upon "it's the meditation."

This discussion interests me on many levels (not to mention the staring into wonderful green eyes level...)....

Some of these levels includes the sematics. Other's include the actual concepts of "a shit" and "the shit" - and yet others have to do with the importance of the word "shit" in not just english, but every language...

And also there is the concept of Ego. No Ego vs Inflated Ego. Either extreme is obviously overdoing it - but I do personally believe that a healthy ego does involve a fair amount of self-confidence. We are who we make ourselves to be, in any ways. If we do not think well of ourselves, why should others?

I do, urgently, have to get going - but as a swift response - self-esteem is vital for an energetic life, and that, for me, means really liking myself - bien dans ma peau - was it Lavy who said that in another thread.

That's essential to being OK.

The inflated ego in terms of arrogance is destructive of self image because it is false - we are all very small in terms of the universe's vastness (Is the contemplation of that not the starting point of all spiritual journeys?). And the zero ego is the point of being annihilated.

Every living being produces waste. It is a sign of life and part of the system of exchange in life. I expect you're right again, Dilly, there's milege in this thread - or at least it will return in another form.

I'm off.

Well said sir! Hope you come back.
How much waste to we impart? How much waste to we take in? What is our spiritual level of shit?

I think a lot of it is all seperation anxiety.

The Jungian thing, sir. Where's the titty?

Seriously, has anyone here read Hillman, James (I think)?

Hillman - psychology, right? Most of his work was based on Jung. Eons ago in college I read one of his books for a class - Heart and Soul of the World (I think). Two essays in one book.
Now that was great shit!
