THE SCORCHED FACE by Dashiell Hammett, 1925
So far its the sole Hammett effort I care for, and I tried most of his stuff. Its pretty good.
A father hires the Continental Op to find his missing daughters. All are rich. The Op starts chasing clues. Then a close friend of the girls kills herself after the Op talks to her. Then the Op finds the dead body of the oldest daughter.
In a nutshell lotsa rich women joined a cult to learn religious mysticism, consumed a special Kool Aid, then fucked lotsa black guys while intoxicated. The cut leader got it all on film and blackmailed the women. The gals pay as long as they can but run outta money and suicide. The missing daughters are dead.
