So, when people talk about the local BDSM scene or the BDSM culture, what does that entail? I'm curious.

The Scene
Okay I'll start this off. I live in a City of one million people. There is only one "swingers," club in town and has been quietly operating for the past 5 years. I'm a Lurker, I look but don't dare step out of the shadows. But I know, pretty much what's going on.
The BDSM scene is on Sunday Afternoons, sometimes will even have an open invitation or "munchie" on Sundays 1PM. So some folks get dressed up in their Sunday best, and go to a very quiet bar for their services.
I've never been there, but well it's there. That one tree in the garden of Eden.

In my area we have several munches a month which is meeting in public in normal clothes to eat and talk but mostly not talk about kink things. It's free.
If you check out you then might be invited to the once a month or so demo and play party. You can buy a membership for the whole year or a one time thing which is about $20.
The demo is with an expert in a particular area showing how you do a particular activity safely. Afterward you can sample the activity. This is in a private home.
The play party after the demo goes on until all hours. The host has play spaces all over the house but you can bring in you own special tools and equipment.
There is no pressure to do or not do anything.

While we were still hanging out with "swingers crowd" husband and I used to go to several places, most of them in private houses, few public ones. They had separate rooms available for BDSM play open for everyone to watch. I saw lot of hot whipping, bondage and other kind of play.
A pair we used to play with a lot was in M/s relationship and very willing to talk about it and show us a lot of things. Several others were in D/s relationships.
I suppose there are strict BDSM places but I never heard of any. All those couples I mentioned were regulars at the same places we went to.
So, is it a common practice to mix "generally kinky crowd" where you others live? I live in Germany right now.

Pretty much exactly what FurryFury said. Here in Wichita there are two main groups that have munches and then play parties/demo nights. There is also a private members only dungeon that can be rented for private parties or specialized groups.
There are also several local people/couples that host private parties in their homes monthly or bimonthly. These can be great because "you" aren't bound by a groups "rules" and more styles of "play" are explored.

Munches, demos, parties, classes, events, weekenders, etc.
I enjoy being involved in "the scene." I've met a lot of my best friends that way, not to mention my current SO
But I'm pretty lucky to live in such a large city that has so much going on so often. Not everyone has the access to the community that I do.

You shouldn't feel like a virgin compared to me. I'm really not that experienced. You might be surprised.
Every area is different though. There is no wrong or right answer to the question.

BTW, weekenders are awesome, and everyone should try to go to one if they can, especially if the hotel is completely sold out to kinksters. There is nothing more awesome than walking around a semi (or completely, as is often the case) naked, hedonistic free-for-all for a few days. My first one was really one of the most fun weekends of my life. One of the best things about weekend events is you can set up pretty much any scene you want, even if its something that would be completely impractical most places, or is completely ridiculous.
I wasn't able to go, but at a recent local event, a bunch of friends organized a "fox-hunt" scene, where our friend, who is a pet-play puppy most of the time, got chased by a bunch of people wearing fox masks, followed by a bunch of other people on toy horses (this kind: http://www.hotfroguk.co.uk/Uploads/...inish-wooden-pole-with-wheels-23475_image.jpg). He got a head start, and then was sniffed out and hunted down, and then the after care was the puppy being caught by all the foxes and hunters, being in the middle of a massive cuddle fest with everyone going "we got you!
