Music lovers do explore......
Take notes......cha,cha,cha
Yep....all that wonderful background music in all the commercials is this stuff
Just a thread to share and introduce good music to all.......please feel free to post your favorites in salsa, latin, and world music.
I urge you to indulge yourself as this is a genera of music that has been overlooked for many years and there is much of it....like other forms of music some of it is.....mediocre so this is intended as a guide. :)
I highly recommend it as a tonic for the blues.......once you get used to this stuff it becomes hard to go back to rock and roll, the complex texture of the rhythms and counter rhythms will become a delightful audio addiction.
I will start with one of my favorites.......

Eddie Palmieri's "El Rumbero del Piano" in the Tropic/salsa category Label..RMM

the cut "El Dueno Monte" is justification to buy the album alone

Great horn arrangements, excellent percussion(Eddie has a history of letting the percussionists do their thing) Great Vocalists
and of course Eddie's phenomenal piano playing.

This stuff is full of life, it will stir your blood with it's excitement and complex rhythms.
My reccomended playing list
for the album is...

Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,and 6

Enjoy!

I also have the site of a great latin/salsa online company that has a unbelievable selection if anyone is interested.

This next one is soft, gentle and a little sexy......Music of brazil....

"Brasileiro" Label Putumayo

Nice and low key laid back....various artists.....a very nice compilation.

Okay here are a few more.......

One of the best salsa dance compilations around.....some great stuff on here from different artists. It is hard not to move with this stuff.

"SALSA FRESCA! Dance hits of the 90's" Label:Rhino
Recommended playing list.....Tracks1,2,3,4,5,6,9,12,and 14

Another excellent compilation of various artists from the Latin Big Band era that is the 50's and 60's .......this stuff is great!

"The afro-Latin Groove.....SABROSO!" Label:Rhino

At last but not least is a great album, but I love one hit in particular.....The song "Palo Duro" is classic salsa the is sweet to the ear...participating artists like Johnny Pacheco, Ismeal Miranda, Pete"el conde" Rodriguez, Cali Aleman, Nester Sanchez to name a few. And of course Larry Harlow's excellent piano playing.

"Larry Harlow's LATIN LEGENDS BAND 1998" Label:Jerry Masucci Music

Hey Mr. Roberts--for a real twist on world music & salsa, have you ever listened to anything by Orquesta de la Luz? They're a salsa band composed entirely of Japanese musicians, and they truly kick ass (even have an endorsement from Tito Puente on their debut album). What's funny is that I've heard that other than their lead singer, no one in the band speaks a lick of Spanish--all of their background singing is just phonetic mimicry!

I've got limited knowledge of truly Latin music (I'm more familiar with Afro-Cuban jazz, a la Dizzy Gillespie), but I hear that Willie Colon is another band leader worth checking out...

Hey Roman, I have heard of them but have not heard their music yet, it is good stuff from all that I have read, they even learned some salsa and mambo moves for choreography....
Gets high marks for dance music!

Willie Colon is a great one.....there are many musicians that move back and forth between Jazz and Latin Jazz and salsa. Eddie Palmieri does both jazz and salsa...his brother Charlie does mainly Jazz. You got to love it when someone lays down a nice latin clave when the jazz cranks up.

Gilberto Santa Rosa.....an excellent artist, I do not have any of his albums but have heard some songs that I loved.

The album of today is.........

Wayne Gorbea's Salsa Picante - "Cogele el Gusto" Label:Shanachie

I will write what is on the back of the CD

"Here is hot, funky, irresistibly danceable salsa with a rambunctious Bronx flavor. Wayne Gorbea has been a popular bandleader on the New York music scene for fifteen years, leading his crack nine-piece band with dynamic piano playing and arrangements."

The first song is 10 minutes long......Nice! Very satisfying from a dancers point of view.:)

Artists to look for.....

Jose Alberto"El Canario"
Raulin Rosendo
Oscar D'Leon
Frankie Ruiz
Ismael Miranda
Celia Cruz(of course)
Cheo Feliciano
Johnny Pacheco
Jimmy Bosch
Alex Leon
Rey Ruiz
Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez
Luis Enrique
Joe Cuba(the sextette)
Brenda K Star
Tony Vega
.....more to come....:)

The salsa album of today is.....

This is a fine compilation of great salsa music, lively, and certain to keep things hopping. Various artists

Okay today we have a couple of excellent albums The first is....

"Caravana Cubana - The late night Sessions" :Label Rhino
This is Afro Cuban music and Jazz at it's finest. Some of the critics did not like it....considered it too stiff....the word I would use is Tight! These guys are amazing, the rhythms in this are amazing.....
Some of the names that jump out at me from this album are...
Jimmy Bosch, Al Mckibbon, and Jesus Chuco Valdes

The other album is a great Salsa Album out of New York City.....

The Spanish Harlem Orchestra " Un Gran Dia En El Barrio" : Label Rope a Dope Records
This album cooks with salsa, a bolero, a cha cha cha......great stuff and great musicians.
Adding to this as I have had this album for a while now.......Yes! Great stuff!

"The Buena Vista Social Club presents....IBRAHIM FERRER" : Label World Circuit/Nonesuch Records

Another great album is ....."Willy Chirino- Greatest Hits" :Label Sony
Some of these songs are fantastic making it a worthy purchase.
Willie is of the Miami cuban community.

A good artist to look for is.........Albita.......a cuban singer who left...or defected from cuba.....discovered by Gloria Estefan's Husband in Miami......
She has a fantastic song called " Fiesta Pa'Los Rumberos" which is on the "Dance with Me" soundtrack from the same name movie.
I bought this album just to have a copy of this song.......fantastic stuff. I did buy an album of hers that I was disappointed in but I have not listened to any others which could be good..:)

just a reminder for you, I do have an excellent online site that has all the music posted here on this thread, I am not affiliated with them..
I have ordered some music from them to my satisfaction, it cost a little more than best buy where you may find some of this stuff.
But as soon as my financial sitiation turns i will be ordering a lot of music from this company. If anyone is interested just PM me and I will send you the name.:)

Hello MizTabby, it is good to be back!
Oh yeah......Ritmo caliente! It stirs me to life!.....
Mark Anthony is a good one.
As well as all that you mentioned above.......

Do yourself a favor and get the two I mentioned two postings back,
Eddie Palmieri really did a great job on "Ritmo Caliente".....I have been listening and listening to this album and get a thrill everytime....Ritmo Caliente su corazon!
Rubalcaba "Pasado y Presente" Is astoundly wonderful as well.......I love this stuff.....I think I am going to practice up on my mambo.:D

This one is hot!

Jimmy Bosch "Soneando Trombon" Label:Rykolatino

This album came out in 1998, has a great cast of musicians
This is Salsa Dura at it's finest....
My favorite tracks are: 1,2,6,7,8,9 and 10 the last two on the album are latin jazz....wonderful pieces...
Track 8 is a hot cha cha.....makes one want to get up and dance......

Do yourself a favor and acquire this one....I highly reccomend it.
:)

Are there sample sound tracks to download and listen to at this site for the music? There's a site I go to that I check out 'clips' of music from the album/cd's, and I find it a godsend of technology so as not to waste money.
I know I like listening to alot of different music...easy listening and rock have their place...but this stuff, I know I can deal with. I am not sure if it applies or not but Carlos Santana Supernatural CD has a couple pieces on their CD that I think would be good dance music for the dances you speak of.
I'd love to learn to dance and have a dance partner to enjoy it with as well.
