Summoned. There was no other word for it. The terse text message on her cell had not used one word more than was absolutely necessary to deliver its message.

Not a 'Hello Darling, how are you?' or a 'having fun shopping?' in there, and nor was there even a qualifying statement, a 'as soon as is convenient', or even 'as quick as you can'!
This had better be an emergency, a matter of life and death! That made her mind whirl, perhaps Nathan had been taken ill, or been diagnosed with cancer or something? That would be sad..... but. I'll be a wealthy widow while I'm still young enough to enjoy it!! No! That's a nasty thought! But the insidious thought was there now, calculating just how much he was worth.
There were the restaurants, that was obviously the bulk of his assets, but he has his finger in other pies. Her mind began to roughly estimate the worth of Nathan Maxwell. OOoooh! What about life assurance?? He was bound to have that! She really needed to take a greater interest in her husband's affairs!! Besides, Ethan, his son from his first marriage would be looking for a sizeable chunk. She wrinkled her brow, thinking for a moment, yeah, he'd be almost 19 now, and undoubtedly he'd make a fuss. He had screamed at his Dad that he was irresponsible to be marrying "a fluffy bit of arm candy". Charming! But he's only 42, fit and slim, and realistically, it was unlikely his health was going to give up on him any time soon. She was glad. No, really, she was!
She spent the remainder of the flight from New York to Boston persuading herself just how glad she was.
She had her 5th Avenue bags of shopping, but really she had been planning on another two days! Really, this was too bad of him!! He ought to know that at 26 she needed a little excitement in her life, and nothing excited her like a high end shopping spree!! She had already blasted $11,000 on clothes, shoes and a handbag, but he wanted her to look nice, right.
Leah Smith had been on the cusp of a big break, or so she told herself, when she met Nathan, 16 years her senior. He was sophisticated, debonair, and rolling in cash, and he seemed intent on lavishing her with gifts! It was love at first sight, and three months later they were wed with a lavish reception in a five star hotel, followed by a three week whirlwind tour of Europe. That had been 18 months ago. She had subsequently found herself a little disenchanted with the hours he worked, always needing to be here or there, constantly on the phone, and rarely there to dance attendance on her. But, she had learned to entertain herself. She worked with her personal trainer to keep her killer body in top notch shape, and she shopped. Nathan had tried to get her to join up-scale charity committees, but frankly, Leah couldn't care less about the less fortunate, why didn't they help themselves!! And how would they ever learn to help themselves if some charity or other was always there handing them stuff on a plate??!
She reclaimed her luggage, complaining to herself that she had no one to carry it for her, but there was a benefit in looking as good as she did, and she soon had some guy offer to carry it out for her! Coming into arrivals, she spotted the driver of their town car, and he took the suitcase from the mildly disappointed young man, who had been hoping for if not dinner, then at least a drinks date!
The drive to their Georgian brownstone was uneventful, and she noted that it was 1.50 when she climbed the front steps, and after using the bathroom, touching up her always perfect make-up, she entered the wood panelled study at 2 on the button.
