Dan Carson woke up in a bed a that was unfamiliar to him in a town that he knew liek the back of his hand. It didn't take long to learn the paved roads in this small southern town though learning the many dirt roads and trails were a different story. But he knew these as well as he had traveled them all since this was where he had grown up. In fact just down the road the was the high school from which he had graduated and the football stadium where had become an all state quarterback winning two state championships.

This room and in fact this entire building was new built while he was away at college and had a view of the river just to the south. It was an upper class apartment building one of which that had been built in the last few years when a new section of interstate had brought a bit more population to the small town. It was two bedroom with an extra room he had set up to be a game room and office. It also had a balcony with a hot tub over looking the river. It was certainly nice that was for sure and he could afford it having earned a nice salary during his two years in the NFL.

A knee injury had cut his career short and he was never a top guy nor a top prospect but he did play 3rd string and got into several games during those two years. His numbers weren't bad and he would have probably made it as far as a back up quarterback had it not been for the injury. He attempted to come back but some of his speed had been lost and playing against guys who was a lot more talented than himself he needed every advantage he could get. He wasn't going to be one of those guys that bounced from team to team, try out after try out hoping to get a chance. He had been paid well compared to what most people made. He had also taken out an insurance policy which paid quite handsomely when he was injured.

Dan had come home to figure out what to do with the rest of his life now that football was over. He missed it but was eager to start fresh and had already invested wisely buying several rental properties in Tampa where had played professionally. They were turning him a handsome profit so he didn't have to be in a rush.

But there was more than money he felt a need to come home for some reason he couldn't figure out so that is where he found himself this morning. He rolled out of bed and headed to the shower.

Once dressed he drove downtown in his black Hummer H3 Alpha and drove downtown. He checked out all his familiar hang outs from high school. He stopped at a local diner for lunch and of course was recognized instantly. He shook hands and exchanged tales and endured it all with a smile on his face. He knew it would take a few weeks but his small time celebrity status would settle down.

He had just began to eat when he caught the scent of a pleasant perfume and felt hands over his eyes.

"Guess who", came a female voice. He recognized that voice almost instantly, "Taylor Gaines" he announced.

The hands were gone with a little giggle as she took a seat across from him. He had graduated with Taylor and they had even dated off and on. To be honest they had slept together off and on wasn't a lot of dating involved in their relationship. She had been a cheer leader and though she did not sleep with anyone only those who was popular or had money.

She still looked great with blonde with her blonde hair and dark tanned skinned. She had certainly taken care of herself over the last six years. He looked at her hand quickly and saw no wedding ring but could see a tan line where one had been not so long ago.

"Oh my god I heard you were back and look at you. You still look amazing in fact you look better than ever." Taylor had the habit of talking so fast your best course of action was to sit back and just listen so that was what he did.

During this time he found out she had followed his career or so she said, had gotten married, divorced recently, no kids and had a date for that night. He hadn't even asked her out but it had been decided in that way that only Taylor can direct things. She gave him her phone number and he was to pick her up at 7pm to go to some new fancy restaurant out by the river.

The rest of the day he just drove around and visited his old high school football coach reliving the past and talking football. As evening closed in he headed home and got ready to take Taylor to dinner.

Looking at himself in the mirror his hair was dark, thick with a few curls and he had trimmed his facial hair short. He stood a flat six foot and weighed in at a muscular 230 lbs and though not quite in the shape after his first year in the NFL he still had a body most guys would love to have and most women adored. He knew his body was nice but always doubted his facial features not considering himself that attractive in the face.

He picked Taylor up and she looked very nice though she wore a dress which showed a lot of cleavage and was probably to short showing plenty of tan bare leg. It was definitely a dress that was made to elicit fantasy and catch ones eye.

They arrived at the restaurant which was busy and was shown to their table. As they followed the hostess Dan looked around scanning the place for any familiar faces. As they neared their table he thought he saw someone that he had missed in his initial scan of the room. He felt eyes upon on him and turned to look a second time. It was then that he saw her sitting there with a guy who he recognized but couldn't quite place. She didn't seem to be looking at him at the moment and where he was seated she was over Taylor's right shoulder a few tables away. He tried to keep from looking but kept waiting to see if they would make eye contact.

Leah Gentry stood on the back deck of her home, looking out over the lake that came right up to her back yard, reminiscing over the past two years. She'd come from a fairly well off family, was a popular cheerleader in high school and continued cheer in college, and now had settled back in her hometown. The home she lived in now was a nice, two story, 4 bedroom house, owned by her family but deeded to her. She had it all to herself and her two dogs. She'd founded and opened her own cheer studio which had gained a good amount of success in the two years since it had started. Though she'd always had plenty of money, she never felt better than anyone or treated anyone like they were less than equals. She was popular in school, but never stuck up or snobby. In fact, she was very serious about her studies and never got into trouble.

She leaned down to pet her Black Lab, Jack as he ran up onto the porch. She was fairly happy where she was in life. A great job, nice home, healthy social life. In their mid 20s, a lot of her friends had already gotten married and had babies or ones on the way. Leah had dated several men throughout college but she'd never felt ready to settle down. In fact, she had a date tonight with an old high school friend. She'd only been passing acquaintances with Eric in school because they ran in different circles. But she'd like him even then. He'd been more in the studious, nerd camp in high school, and now he worked for a computer programming company in Atlanta. They reconnected a few weeks ago. He visited on weekends and they had gone out a couple times.

She went inside to get ready for her date. After a shower, she dressed in a simple black dress that accentuated her curves without coming across as too revealing. Though she was more on the management side of her company, she still coached and kept in shape. Her hips were curvy but her thighs and legs were lean and toned, her chest was modest in size but shapely. Her hair was a light tone of brown and she left it down and wavy. Her eyes were a similar shade and her face had soft feature and full pouty lips. After slipping on shiny earring and a nice necklace, she found her black heels and stepped into them.

Eric picked her up at 8pm sharp. He looked rather stunning himself in khakis and a button down. Tonight they were eating at a new restaurant out near the river. It was pretty fancy and higher class for the little town. Leah enjoyed Eric's company and loved that he was attractive and intellectually stimulating at the same time. It appeared that they may be heading toward a relationship if things continued to go well.

They'd been at the restaurant for about half an hour, talking, eating appetizers and sipping wine when Leah glanced up. When she saw the face of the man across the room, she did a double take. At first, she was shocked to see him. She knew that he'd played for the NFL after college, but she hadn't followed him, just assuming he would live that life for a while. So seeing him here in their hometown was a surprise. Dan Carson. He looked up and for a brief moment their eyes locked. Then she cleared her throat and looked away.

"What's wrong?" Eric asked when he saw the look on her face.

Leah sighed and shook her head. "Nothing..." She said softly. "I just never expected to see that asshole again."

She and Dan had dated in high school. She'd thought that he was the love of her life and she felt honored that out of all the girls he could have, and probably did have, he'd finally chosen her. But it turned out, he hadn't changed much, and when she told him she wasn't comfortable giving up her virginity to him just yet, he eventually found someone who would. She'd been crushed but she moved on. She smirked when she realized the blonde with him was Taylor Gaines. Apparently neither of them had changed much.

"Shit, I'm sorry." Eric said. "You want to go?" He'd known Dan in high school though they were never friends and knew about what had happened.

Leah shook her head. "No...no it's fine. It's been years and what's passed is passed, you know?"

She tried her best to continue the date and not think about Dan. Eventually, they finished their meal and paid. Their path out was right past Dan's table. She made a point to avoid eye contact and hold tightly to Eric's hand. He excused himself to go to the restroom before leaving so she sat outside on a bench to wait for him.

When Leah locked eyes with him even briefly he didn't see a look of happiness or friendliness. He did see recognition and hostility however though who could blame the girl. He had dated Leah back in high school and had broken up with her when she refused to allow him to take her virginity. Well, at least that was what she believed the real reason slightly different.

He examined who she was with and realized that it was Eric which caused him to lightly chuckle to himself. Eric was actually a pretty nice guy and quite smart always more inclined towards books than sports. But Dan had grown up a lot over the years and come to realize to much of anything is bad including to much smarts or to many muscles. He attempted to strike a balance at this point in his life of being smart and making good decisions while still able to be crazy, have fun and enjoy spontaneity. He was also surprised to see her with Eric as Leah had been a popular girl, cheerleader and hung out with his type of crowd. Eric, well yeah, not so much more the try to blend in and not be noticed crowd. He was probably still a virgin Dan considered and once more he almost laughed aloud at the thought that they were both still virgins.

Taylor touched his hand, "Dan, earth to Dan." Looking over at her, "I'm sorry babe I zoned out." She looked hard at him, "Yeah zoned out looking at Leah and Eric." Dan raised his hands, "Yes you got me but it was more of a can't believe they are a couple than anything else. I'm here with you and I know that so I'm sorry." He leaned in to give her a sweet kiss. Dan knew just how to make up with Taylor and how to push her buttons though this time he did actually mean it.

Taylor laughed, "A couple I hardly think so they have only been out a few times and Leah has never married. She and I still talk in passing but yeah they are not a couple not yet and she hasn't changed a bit over the years."

Leah and Eric had stood to leave and was forced to walk near them. He had to admit that she still looked beautiful with curves in all the right places to make a man sigh though he hide his appraisal of her from Taylor.

Dinner came and they finished and he enjoyed spending time with Taylor even if she was overly flirtatious. They talked about old times, his experiences in college and after.

"Hey Dan there is a party up on the big sand bar by the lake why don't we drive up there so I can show you off." Dan agreed as Taylor ran to the bathroom and he walked out to the sitting area to wait.

Leah waited for Eric to come out of the bathroom. Later that evening, she had planned to attend a party with several of her old friends. Though they weren't as wild and crazy as their teenage years, there was still plenty of fun and debauchery to be had. She was thinking of asking Eric, but wasn't sure if it'd be his thing. And then the thought occurred to her that since Dan was in town, he might be there. Especially if he was hanging with Taylor. She couldn't blame him, most of their mutual friends would probably be excited to see him. Especially the girls. She smirked, thinking he'd be hard pressed to find one he hadn't already slept with.

She glanced up when the door opened, expecting to see him. The smile faded though when she saw it was Dan that walked out instead. There was no way he'd miss her sitting there. She debated quickly whether she should say hello or avoid him. It had been years and there was no reason they couldn't be civil, but there was equally no reason to even acknowledge each other, right?

Dan looked over and their eyes locked again. There was an awkward tension for a moment, neither of them sure what to say, if anything. The problem was solved however when Eric came through the other door. "Hey, babe. Ready to go?" He asked. She stood and tore her eyes from Dan's.

"Yeah, let's go." She said quickly. Eric noticed Dan and where normally he would have spoken, he took Leah's cue that she wanted to get away. He merely nodded at him with a slight smile and grabbed Leah's hand again.

Once out of earshot, Leah gave him a grateful smile. "Thanks. That was really awkward back there."

Eric shrugged. "No problem. But maybe it doesn't have to be awkward. I mean, it's been years, people grow up. Maybe he's changed."

"I know, but seeing his face just brought back all the memories and I'd rather just avoid the negativity. Besides, why dwell on my past when I have a great guy that has been making me very happy the past few weeks?" She grinned and leaned up to kiss him gently before getting in the car.

On the way home, she brought up the party that night. "I really want to go and see all our friends but I have a feeling he will be there. I'm sure Taylor is gonna have him on her arm to show off or something." She made a face and Eric laughed.

"Just go have fun." He told her. "Don't worry about Dan. If he's there, he's there. But don't let him ruin your good time. Just think of it as just another guy at the party. No worries."

Leah nodded. "You're right as usual. I get myself too worked up sometimes. Are you sure you don't want to come?"

"I'd love to hang with you, babe." He said. "But parties aren't really my thing. Besides, I need to get back tonight, I've got a Sunday work meeting in the morning."

"Alright." Leah sighed as Eric drove her home. He stayed for a little while longer, and they watched Netflix and made out. It didn't go any further. Not that Eric didn't want to. At 25, Leah was still a virgin. Not that she hadn't done anything, but somehow, she'd just never gone that far with a guy. Maybe it was something to do with her experience with Dan. She found herself wanting to make sure a guy was really into her and wouldn't let her down before she gave that part of herself up. And thus far, she hadn't found anyone like that. Thankfully, Eric understood and didn't push her. Maybe he would be that guy. Time would tell.

After he left, Leah got ready for the party. She threw on a bikini bc these sand bar parties usually ended up with people in the water. On top she wore a denim skirt that came to mid thigh and a simple white tank top that hugged her curves. She wasn't out to impress, or get laid, she just wanted to have fun. Her friend Alayna picked her up and the two headed to the party.

Once there, she'd forgotten all about Dan. She greeted all her friends, especially those she didn't get to see often, with hugs and laughter. So far, Dan was nowhere in sight and she was having a great time catching up. Someone had set up a makeshift bar, with coolers of beer and alcohol and mixers for any kind of drink you could want. After a bit, she headed over that way to grab a drink.

As Dan looked at Leah he narrowed his eyes just a bit and was about to speak when her date Eric walked up, "probably had gone to the bathroom", he thought.

He looked at Eric momentarily and nodded a hello in return to the guy. Dan could only smile and chuckle at the moment as he knew it was probably awkward for the both of them. She had appeared a bit nervous and also ready to move into that defensive mode she could so easily slip into.

Watching them go he saw her kiss Eric, "oh how sweet" he muttered under his breath not without a bit of sarcasm however. "I wonder if she is sleeping with him" he mused which also caused him to laugh just a bit. He had to admit though that seeing her did bring up some old emotions from the past and as he thought about it he felt arms slip around him.

He turned to face Taylor and she kissed him fully on the mouth which caused any thoughts of Leah to evaporate at least for the moment.

"You ready my handsome devil", she asked rather almost purred to him.

They walked to his Hummer which still bore his personalized plate of "TDBABY". He had gotten this in the NFL as it was his moniker throughout his college career. Whenever he threw a touchdown pass he would yell "TD BABY".

Taylor talked about the party and he was more than happy to take her and see some old friends. They made a quick stop by Taylor's house where she changed into a pair of cut off jean which were really short a tee shirt and underneath she wore her bikini that was next to nothing. She also grabbed them a few towels and when she asked about what he would wear if they went swimming he replied, "nothing at all" and winked at her. This elicited a huge giggle and a kiss on the cheek from her, "that will get you everywhere mister", came her reply.

Dan made a stop and bought a bottle of tequila remembering how Taylor loved doing Tequila shots. They drove to the party as she started jabbering away about first one person then another.

Dan pulled up and parked and noticed there were a lot of people here tonight. He had no idea who as he would no longer recognize cars and was sure there would be a lot of people he didn't know. He wondered if Leah would be there and then decided it was doubtful as Eric probably would not want to attend.

They moved through the throng of people towards the fire where a lot of people were standing around drinking and talking. She of course announced who was back and that he was her date for the night so to all the ladies he was off limits. Everyone wanted to talk to him as he quite the celebrity. Looking off down the beach he spied Leah getting a drink from the make shift bar and once more their eyes locked. She looked almost pissed or was it amused. Taylor was draped all over him and when she noticed Leah looking she kissed him while staring back at her.

Leah chatted with another friend as she mixed her Crown and Coke, one of her usual staples. She'd never been the girl that went for fruity drinks. She liked smooth and bold. She turned around, sipping her drink when she saw him. Of course he was here, she chuckled mirthless. Why wouldn't he be? And there was Taylor too, all over him.

Leah rolled her eyes and was about to turn away when she saw Taylor look right at her before planting a passionate kiss on Dan's neck. He, of course, didn't seem to mind. "Typical." She muttered and shook her head. Are we back in high school? She thought, turning away and adding a little more whiskey to her drink. Apparently neither of them had changed. She had to admit that the years had been good to Dan, and Taylor looked almost as if she hadn't aged a bit. Apparently neither had their brains.

She remembered Eric's advice and decided to ignore both of them. She didn't need that immaturity in her life anymore. Locating a few friends that actually weren't crowded around Dan, she jogged over to them and made a point to forget Dan and Taylor. She couldn't avoid catching a glimpse every now and then, and it was more of the same with Taylor flaunting him and making sure to rub all over him.

After a few drinks, Leah decided to join her friends in the water. Pulling her long hair back, she threw off her skirt and tank top, revealing her bikini. Then she waded out into the water with the rest. Someone had brought a beach ball and she joined in a game of tossing and batting it around.

She hadn't noticed Dan and Taylor enter the water. At least not until she leaped up to swat the ball, losing her balance and falling backwards. She felt large, strangely familiar hands grab her from behind to steady her. Swallowing hard, she jumped away when she realized who had grabbed her.

"Don't touch me." She said coldly.

Taylor laughed. "Oh come on, Leah. He was just keeping your clumsy ass from falling. Not like he's trying to hit on you. Why would he when he's got someone who'll actually show him a good time?" She smirked and pressed her body to Dan's, kissing him.

Leah just made a face of disgust. "Yeah, ok. Have fun with that." She said, turning to swim away.

Dan watched Leah bat the ball lose her balance and since he was arms length away he reached out and steadied her. It wasn't so much as it was her as he would have done it for anyone. Her response when she realized it was him was cold and mean shocking him to a degree. Her "Don't touch me" gave him pause for a moment and was more than enough time for Taylor to defend him in her own little way.

The comment about showing him a good time was probably uncalled for and slightly bothered Dan as he really had no ill will towards Leah. In fact we would love to sit down with her and try to straighten things out at least to a friendly level.

Seeing her also stirred up some mixed emotions that ranged from loss, bad choices, what if's and the one girl he wanted and never had.

Dan was about to speak when Taylor kissed him and he didn't resist though he did watch Leah as she attempted to put some distance between them.

"Leah wait as you know I'm back and we will likely bump into one another the town isn't that big. So cant we just learn to be civil and move on with our lives?"

Then when she took a shot at Taylor it pissed him off. Despite the fact that Taylor was easy and a bit materialistic she wasn't the one that Leah was pissed at. She was defending him in her own way and he couldn't let it pass without saying something.

"Leah don't be a bitch to Taylor just because she chose to do something you didn't. That was your choice as it was hers and it has been six years so why don't you just let the past alone and learn some civility. If you can't fine you can be a bitch to me but not Taylor or anyone else I might enjoy spending time with.'

His words came out a bit harsh and stronger than he meant and he could tell by the look on her face she was had gone from irritated to angry. He knew that this was going to get ugly. A few people had gathered around watching the old drama play out once more before them. By morning they would be the talk of the town and though many would side with Leah he wouldn't go down without a fight.

The dilemma however was that he wanted to set things right with Leah not fight with her while part of him still viewed her as a challenge. He still wanted to be the one to take her virginity though not to embarrass her or make her feel bad. At one time he had felt that they might have a future together but immaturity, raging hormones and local football hero prevented him from being the boyfriend she deserved.

He pulled Taylor a bit closer to him as a show of support for her defending him and she smiled a evil little smile.

Leah half laughed at Dan's speech. "Me, a bitch? Are you going to pretend that what she just said was kind and thoughtful? Please." She rolled her eyes and stood facing him now, hands on her hips. "Oh, and you enjoy spending time with a LOT of people, don't you, Daniel?" She jeered, using his full name, that only she ever called him.

Leah caught the little smile Taylor gave her but ignored it. To think they used to be good friends.

She was vaguely aware of people standing around watching, the ball floating in the water untouched. But she didn't care, years of unspoken thoughts and unfinished business ran through her head. There was never any real closure to their relationship. He'd ended things and proceeded to fuck whoever would let him. She was raging with all the things she'd wanted to say to him back then.

"Looks like you haven't changed a bit." She spat and turned to wade back to shore.

Hearing her use his full name only pissed him off more, "You don't get to call me Daniel anymore baby doll." Baby doll was a name he had always called her and to this day only used it in reference to that.

"Don't just turn your back and walk off like a spoiled little girl that didn't get her way. You sure like to dish it out but can you stand here and take just as good as you give? Oh yeah you don't give anything do you!"

He was starting to get mean and so wanted to stop but just couldn't shut his mouth.

"As far as who I spend time with I wanted to spend time with you and only you but you and your morals didn't want that. But I suppose your morals don't cover how you treat people do they or what you say to them. No wonder you are with Eric as he probably can't get it up so there is no danger to your precious morals."

At this point he had said much more than he ever intended and already regretted the things he said.

"Leah lets just stop and not do this alright. I want to be friends and not hate one another."

His anger was gone now and his face looked sad and his eyes caught her it was the same look that he used to give her when they thought they were in love. It was a look he had only ever shared with her.

Leah whirled around at Dan's venomous words. She opened her mouth to retort back at his line referencing her virginity, but he continued to speak, finally insulting Eric. Her face was red and her eyes blazed with anger, shooting daggers at him.

She dug her nails into her palms to keep from slapping him. She had never hit anyone in seriousness in her life, but Dan had pushed her too far.

But before she could get a word in again, he seemed to back off. His voice became softer as he petitioned for the fighting to stop and for them to be friends. But it was that look that set her off.

"Fuck you!" She yelled, stepping up close to him. "No! You don't get to say those things to me then pretend you want to be my friend! You don't get to look at me like that anymore! It doesn't work! First, know nothing about Eric and me so leave him out of this! And you wouldn't know anything about morals either, would you? Because you don't seem to have any! And as far as how I treat people? I treated you better than you ever should have deserved! But it wasn't good enough for you was it? Because I wouldn't 'give it up' you threw it all away so you could stick your little dick in any cheap slut who would let you!"

She felt slightly embarrassed that everyone was staring now, but it felt good to get this off her chest after so long.

"So, no! I don't want to be your friend! I have much better friends than you could ever be!"

Her angry words hurt a bit not quite cutting to the bone but close. But Dan was good at hiding things and he didn't let her or the on lookers know his true feelings.

He knew that some of what she was so true however it was not nearly as black and white as she saw the world. In fact Leah always wanted everything to be black or white with no gray areas. Calling every girl he had slept with a slut wasn't fair but he would hold his tongue for now.

"Leah you have no idea what kind of person I have become or what kind of friend I can be it has been six years. I have changed a lot but it doesn't seem that you have. If I'm wrong fine then simply prove me wrong and give me a chance."

Taylor was pouting a bit by this point and Dan felt somewhat guilty as technically she was his date and he was all but ignoring her. Turning to face Taylor he looked at her, "I'm sorry for all of this Taylor I really am."

Taylor smiled at him as it signaled to her that he hadn't forgotten her. "Its alright Dan I understand that this needed to happen. But I can be that friend you need and I promise I will treat you like a King! As for you Leah I thought you were my friend and you refer to me as a slut? Thanks for showing your true colors you sure that you aren't a bit jealous that I have him and you don't?"

Dan wanted to tell her to be quiet but finally hung his head in defeat knowing better than to get into the middle of two women arguing.

"You've changed?" Leah shook her head. "Nothing you have done or said thus far has proven that to me. How about you prove it and I'll believe it."

She turned toward Taylor when she started talking.

"First of all, sweetheart, you hardly ever speak to me, so don't act like we're bffs. And second, I never called you personally a slut." She wanted to add 'but if the shoe fits...' but decided against it. "And no, I'm not jealous. You two were made for one another."

She turned back to Dan. "But you know what? You're right. It's been years and you're not worth wasting my energy on fighting. You know you were an asshole back then, but if you want to prove you've changed, come find me. If not, we'll agree to stay away from one another."

She turned and started once again to walk back to the beach. Any alcohol she'd had had worn off by now. She found a towel and quickly dried off before sliding into her regular clothes again. A few of her closer friends jogged over to see if she was alright, but she shook them off, not wanting to talk about it as she gathered her things.

"That's right just leave", Taylor told Leah as she stormed off. Dan feeling a bit of anger return called after her, "You know what perhaps us staying away from one another is best after all since I'm an asshole. Go hang out with your little book worm and have a nice life."

Once again he could have kicked his own ass for opening his mouth. "Why do I always sabotage my relationships", he wondered to himself? Leah might have been one of the first girls that he did something like that but she hadn't been the last.

He had dated Kelly in college and when she started talking about living together he stopped calling her. When she finally confronted her about it he picked a fight and they broke up. Lisa was another that was pretty much the same story and finally there was Tina who was a cheerleader in the NFL. They had dated for a year and she had been wanting to get serious finally he just went out and cheated on her. He also made damn sure she found out and ran her off. Didn't even attempt to reconcile and when she called wanting to talk he basically hung up on her.

The people milling about were beginning to return to drinking or the water since the show was over. Dan looked about and finally said to the crowd, "I hope you guys enjoyed that stay tuned for the rematch to be held at a future date and undecided venue.

Everyone chuckled and he went and grabbed the bottle of tequila finding a nice spot on the beach alone. Taylor joined him and they started doing shots while everyone else pretty much stayed away from them. "Don't you worry about that bitch baby you have me what more could you ask for." It was a statement more than a question and it made Dan think. Taylor was beautiful he had to admit and guys would kill to have her on his arm. She came from money and you could say one thing for her if she dated someone she didn't cheat not at least that he had ever heard about. She was fiercely loyal if anything but she was also very materialistic and enjoyed trying to climb the social ladder. She wanted the world to revolved around her and she usually didn't stay with one guy for very long. If single she would go out and sleep around a good bit and a one night stand was considered a fun thing to do for her. But he could do much worse he supposed though she wasn't the only girl that would be available to him that was for sure.

Leah however was also just as beautiful though more of a girl next door look rather than the blonde bikini model type. She was smart and had goals that didn't include climbing the social ladder. She was also very loyal and when they were happy treated him wonderfully always trying to do little things to make him happy. She was considerate, polite and was certainly the kind of girl you wanted to take home to meet your folks. Taylor you probably wanted to keep away from family outings if nothing else because of her reputation and her mouth.

Dan wondered how serious Leah and Eric was even though he held no ill will towards the guy he just felt in his heart that she was settling because he was a nice guy. He was the type of guy that would do anything for her but would never wear the pants in the family. He would never truly stand up for her but would hide behind Leah's coat tail. If he had been there tonight he doubted very seriously Eric would have said a thing. He was also smart and probably successful as well and could provide for Leah a very nice life style even though he knew she was perfectly capable of doing so on her own. He would want kids and make a good father until they wanted to play sports and then it would be up to Leah.

Taylor moved into Dan's lap and they began to make out as the tequila was beginning to take affect. They kissed for several minutes and finally Taylor looked at him, "Dan take me home baby lets get out of here."

Dan hesitated for only a second mainly because this was exactly what Leah expected out of him. But she had called him an asshole and any chance of her seeing him in a different light was slim to none. He remembered she told him if he had truly changed to come see her but his alcohol addled mind no longer cared.

Dan scooped up Taylor and carried her back to his vehicle as she nuzzled into his neck and kissed it. He drove her to his apartment and got out wondering where Leah lived and how funny and bad it would be if she saw him taking Taylor back to his house. "Oh well fuck it" he thought, "whats done is done."

Dan led her into the apartment and to the bedroom where Taylor wasted no time in removing both of their clothes and pulling him into bed. He awoke the next morning and her legs were intertwined with his his and managed to untangle himself slightly feeling a hang over brewing. He made coffee and then went and got into the large and spacious shower only to have Taylor join him shortly after. They spent a good part of the morning back in bed before finally she said she needed to go home.

As he drove her home he looked around wondering if he might pass or see Leah but he had no idea what she drove. He knew that his vehicle stuck out like a sore thumb as it was probably one of a kind here in town. Taylor chatted away telling him how wonderful of a night it had been and couldn't wait to see him once more. She wanted to go out that night but Dan told her he had would call her and let her know as he had to do some unpacking and was pretty tired from the move. She pouted a bit and offered to help him and Dan just said call me later and we will figure it out.

She gave him a big kiss at her door and then she was gone giggling as she went into her apartment. Shaking his head he made his way back to his vehicle wondering how he should spend his day.

Leah ignored Dan and Taylor as they called after her. Fuck them both, she didn't care anymore. She just wanted to go home. After she packed her things, Alayna offered to give her a ride and she accepted. The whole way, Alayna wouldn't shut up about Dan and Taylor, saying how sorry she was about what had happened and that Leah was better than both of them. Leah thanked her for her support but she just wanted to forget he even existed.

After she got home, she went right to bed, not wanting to think anything of Dan or Taylor. She awoke the next morning feeling remarkably refreshed. She really did feel a lot better and had lost a lot of the bitterness she felt. It didn't matter what Dan did anymore. She had her closure now and a possibly promising blooming relationship with a great guy.

She grabbed a quick bite to eat and after it settled, she set out for her morning run. Leah lived a couple of miles from Taylor and her running route always took her past her apartment. She thought about changing her route up, but decided against it. It didn't matter anymore, right? She didn't really think anything of it until she approached her place, and saw the shiny Hummer with the familiar tag that she recognized as Dan's from the party. Of course he was at her place. Then she realized they were both at the door. Leah was far enough away that neither of them would see her, especially not with their faces smushed together. But still, she hesitated only a moment, contemplating slashing his precious tires while he wasn't looking. Then she realized she didn't have a knife. And that wasn't the kind of person she was and she was over it, remember? And also that was a little psychotic.

Leah continued her run, turning the corner away from Taylor's house and jogging down a side street, trying to push the thoughts from her mind. Today would be a good day, dammit!

Dan decided to just drive around for a little while and was in no hurry. He had the windows down and the radio on playing it really loud. He just took random turns here and there with no particular destination in mind. A song come on the radio and he smiled as he recognized it then frowned. This had been the song that Leah had called "their" song. He started to change the station but left it as he thought of her.

"Alright Dan do you want to do the right thing for once in your life?", he wondered. He knew that he should try and talk to her but yet that meant he would have to come to her with his hat in his hand and swallow that pride of his.

He was still debating it when suddenly the opportunity was thrust into his lap. There Leah was jogging down the side walk in front of him. Her back was to him and she had seen him just yet.

He pulled over and got out a piece of paper and quickly wrote, "I'm an asshole alright but I would like to show you I've changed. Can I talk to you?"

The yards of the houses were higher than street level and Dan reversed course and drove one block over then jumped out of the Hummer coming down the intersecting sidewalk ahead of her. Hiding behind a tree in the yard above her he took the note and fashioned it into a paper airplane. "Alright quarterback time to hit the wide open receiver."

He tossed the plane and it flew perfectly landing against her chest. If she would have had her hands open it would have fallen into them perfectly. He waited still partially concealed by the tree on the hill.

Anna didn't usually run with headphones. She liked to really feel her work out and not be side tracked by music blaring in her ears. For the most part, she was able to tune out outside sounds. Running was almost like a form of meditation for her. Vaguely, she would hear clips of songs from passing cars but paying them no mind. Until she heard an old song she hadn't heard in a long time. It was faint and coming from behind her but it was enough. It was "their" song. She ran faster, trying to block out the memories.

Finally, the car seemed to turn off and the song faded completely away. She hadn't ran much farther when suddenly something hit her right in the chest. Her hands flew up to grab whatever it was as she slowed down. A paper airplane? She looked around, thinking some kids had accidentally thrown it her way, but there was no one in sight. Weird. She started to crumple it up when she realized there was writing on it. Curious, she unfolded it.

The scrawling handwriting was immediately recognizable. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the note. A mixture of shock and confusion crossed her face. Dan? She looked up again, searching the area and finally spotted him behind a tree just as he stepped out. Was he crazy? She half laughed at the stunt, but it wasn't unusual for Dan. He was always doing off the cuff things like this.

She studied him for a moment. Part of her wanted to cuss him out but she decided against it. She had told him she'd give him a chance to prove himself. She wasn't sure that he could, but she finally sighed and started walking up the hill toward him.

"You know normal people just call." She said as she approached, holding the paper. "I'm sure you could've gotten my number from someone. But then again, I guess you never liked going things the normal way." When she reached him, she folded her arms across her chest and looked up at him. "Alright. So? You wanted to talk?"

He thought she just might throw the airplane down without a second glance but was relieved when she read the note. When she finally saw him she almost looked,,, well happy would be a far overstatement but she didn't appear angry at least.

"It just seemed like a easy way to ask if we could talk no pressure or anything. Yeah I suppose I could have gotten your number but was afraid you might hang up without me being able to say much. So I got my intentions across and I left the rest up to you."

Dan looked around for a second, "This wasn't planned and I'm not sure that standing on a street corner is ideal location but beggars can't be choosers."

Dan decided to sit down so that he wouldn't appear to be in an aggressive posture and he took a seat on the bottom of the little hill in the grass.

"Look I'm not going to rehash last night but I admit I was being a dick to you and said some pretty mean things. I didn't mean anything when I touched you was only preventing you from falling would have done that for anyone guy or girl though I understand your shock."

He picked a blade of grass and toyed with as he got his thoughts together.

"I'm sure I can never make up the past and know I can never change the past but I will tell you I'm sorry for any hurt or pain I caused you. I also know you will not understand this but back then it wasn't as black and white as you saw it at least for me. One day if we get to the point we can discuss it I will explain things to you but there was a lot more going on then just a horny guy wanting sex."

He swallowed watching her face cautiously for any hints of anger, "I'm not making excuses here just trying to give you a little insight. As far as the present is concerned well I have changed in many ways. College and the business world of the NFL has taught me how to be successful and financially sound but it taught me a lot more as well something more important than money. It taught me the importance of friendship. I'm not talking the type of friends that really aren't there when you need them. I'm talking about the type of friend you can always depend on no matter what."

He looked off into the distance almost seeming like he was somewhere else at the moment.

"I saw and did a lot of pretty cool things while I've been away traveled the world and been all over the country. I have also seen some pretty crappy things and done some things I'm not so proud of myself. But these things all changed me and mostly for the better I think. So I suppose that's my speech for now the ball is in your court and I will be glad to answer any questions you might have."

He stopped taking a deep breath so she could speak.

Leah watched Dan lower himself to the ground, but she didn't join him. She just stood in front of him, arms crossed over her chest. She let him speak, taking in his words. Occasionally, he would pause, but she didn't but in. This was his chance and she was going to let him have it.

After he'd finished, she nodded, letting her arms fall to her sides. "I guess, I sort of overreacted when you grabbed me last night. I know you were only trying to help." She sighed. "I know I said some mean things too. It's just that...I thought I had put all that behind me over the years, all the hurt, the anger, and confusion. Seeing you again brought it all back to the surface. Maybe there was more going on for you, but all I had to go on was you leaving me, with no explanation other than you needed to be free to fuck other girls. Because that's what you did, so what was I supposed to think?"

Leah finally sat down too, crossing her legs in front of her and raising her eyes to his. "And the first time I see you in years, you're barely back a day and you're already hooking up with Taylor. So, you can see why I'd think you haven't changed at all. You know?" She looked down, playing with her shoelace.

"But I guess it doesn't matter. What's passed is passed and I guess I don't see any reason we can't be civil with one another."

Dan listened intently to Leah's words not saying anything just allowing her to talk. It had gone much better than he had expected and other than mentioning Taylor he was pleased. He also wanted to tell her that one reason he broke up with her was that her father had basically explained that he wasn't quite cut from the same cloth. That he wanted his little girl to marry a man that wouldn't just provide for her but would give her social worth as well.

Her parents were wealthy by a small town's standards and by many others honestly though she never flaunted that fact. Dan's however was middle class with his Dad working for the power company and his mom was a nurse at the local hospital. They didn't belong to the country club like Leah's parents nor did they have a park named after their family.

There was also more pressure than she could ever have understood during his senior year as college recruiters were constantly calling him. The town had lifted him on this pedestal and he was so afraid of letting anyone down. Girls just threw themselves at him and he was a 18 year old kid with raging hormones. Everyone seemed to want something from him and though he never let anyone know he was scared to death. Even his high school football coach put all the pressure of the team winning on his shoulders. The rest of the team was good just not great and if they were to win a state title it would be on how he played.

He was also fighting a ankle injury no one knew about and played through the pain telling no one. It was only a severe strain but he never told a soul cause he knew the doctor would take him off the field for a week or two and his backup was a freshman.

When she had finished speaking he waited a moment and then started to explain about him and Taylor.

"I didn't go searching for Taylor we bumped into each other by pure chance and asked me out. I had nothing better to do and I agreed to go with her. I didn't consider how it might look if I saw you and I'm not going to lie and say I regret it but I didn't roll into town and seek her out." He didn't tell her that they had slept together the night before as he figured she already knew that part.

"Honestly Leah I like Taylor but I have no real friends here anymore or really any where. Sure I always had plenty of buddy's in college and even in the NFL but I wouldn't call them friends. Mom and Dad moved to the coast and I have no desire to go there and I was tired of living in a big city. My heart is in the small town and I was ready to come home. So where do we go from here? Is this it we will be civil and if we happen to see each other. I don't want to cause problems with you and Eric either."

Leah stared at the ground as she listened to Dan. Unlike last night, when they were going at each other, talking with him today reminded her of the old Dan. The guy she could have long talks with about anything. The guy she knew before it all came crashing down. He explained himself sensibly and came across as genuine. Could they be more than civil, though? Could they be friends?

"Eric and I aren't really together yet." She told him when he'd finished. "He's a great guy and there's a lot more to him that what we knew in high school. But we've only been on a few dates. It's not serious yet, so who knows what will happen?" She shrugged. "I guess...we can be friends...if you're serious about having changed. Just know that it may take me a while to fully trust you again."

Leah stopped and looked up at him for a long moment. "You look good." She said finally, with a small smile. "I'm glad you're doing well."

ding out that Leah and Eric were not serious and had only been on a few dates lifted his spirits. Why he wasn't exactly sure cause he doubted that even if they became friends they would never be romantic again.

"I don't think Eric is a bad guy at all sure I was a little surprised to see you with him but he is a good and decent fellow or at least he was."

He didn't want to say more about him as there didn't seem to be to much to their relationship. He was guessing that maybe she was dating him because he was safe meaning he wouldn't push the sex issue to far.

"Leah, I'm very serious about having changed. I'm not going to lie and say that I don't still enjoy going out some and getting a bit crazy but I know when to do that and when not to now. As far as girls go well I haven't dated anyone serious in a good while but the last person I was dating exclusively I was totally committed until the relationship ran its course. But that really isn't an issue here since we would work on being friends anyways."

He put the last part in just so she would know he understood the order of thing. Dan would love a chance to go out with her again but if there was just a tiny chance he knew he couldn't push it till she saw what kind of man he had become.

When she told him he looked good he couldn't help but grin his old grin that usually melted girls hearts.

"Well football taught me one thing and that was the importance of being in shape. It's not to impress other people but was to keep me from getting murdered by a 275 lb pissed off defensive lineman that was getting paid millions to hit me really hard. But I think you win that contest as well, you look amazing even better than you did back in school."

He stood up, "I should let you get back to your run but would you take another chance and go for coffee with me sometime as friends? You name the time and place and I'm there."

He reached for his wallet before she could even answer and turned it over writing down his cell number.

"Sorry for handing you a business card but my personal cell is on the back and if you call the number on the front you can also get my answering service as well. Feel free to call or text me anytime day or not for whatever reason to chat, vent or even to yell at me. I promise I will listen and just say yes mam."

He laughed at the last part as he handed it to her.

"Leah once more thank you for at least listening to me I probably didn't deserve that but thank you."

Leah just nodded when Dan suggested they get coffee sometime. "Ok." Was all she said. She took his business card he handed her, flipping it over to look at the information on the front.

"Interesting." She said, bemused. Then laughed a little when he said he'd just listen and say yes ma'am if she called to yell or vent. Her eyes lifted to his, and for a moment she was struck by the same adorable crinkle in his eyes when he laughed.

"Yeah, um, we'll get coffee sometime. Sounds good." She told him, clearing her throat. "And I told you I'd give you a chance, and you cared enough to try to take it so...that shows a little bit of promise already." She smiled softly.

"So, yeah." She hesitated, debating if she should hug him or not. Then she stepped forward and stood on her tip toes to wrap her arms lightly around him. When his followed suit she had to stop herself from melting against him. It was so familiar and at one point used to make her feel safe. "I'm sorry about last night." She whispered in his ear. "It is really good to see you, Daniel." She finished then pulled back.

It wasn't a lie. She was glad to see him, even if she hadn't been thrilled about it last night. But he did seem to want to prove himself and she was glad of that.

"So, see ya," She gave a little wave as she backed up and started to jog down the street.

* * *

Leah had difficulty shaking Dan from her mind over the next few days. Occasionally, she would pull out the business card, contemplate calling him, then put it back. Talking to him, he seemed sincere and he didn't push her, but left the ball entirely in her court. He'd made no effort to contact her the past few days so maybe he was trying to show her he'd really changed.

She immersed herself in work for the rest of the week. She worked mostly from home, and it was pretty laid back, but she liked to work enough to keep her weekends free.

She was disappointed when the weekend finally came to find out that Eric would be out of state for work and unable to come down. So, Saturday afternoon, she pulled out the card Dan had given her, flipped it over.

Pulling out a phone, she sent a text.

Still up for that coffee? -L

Dan couldn't believe it when she stepped forward and hugged him. It felt so good to have her in his arms once more and he really didn't want to let go. He hugged her firmly but not tightly and didn't prolong it following her lead as to how long the embrace should last.

"Leah one more confession. I have thought more about you by far than anyone else in this town since I have been gone. So yeah it has been wonderful to see you even last night even though we were fighting it was better than not having seen you at all."

He said his goodbyes wondering if this would be the end of it but hoping it was a start to something great.

The next few days Dan only saw Taylor twice once for lunch and then one night they went out to a bar though it was an out of the way place that was quiet where they could just talk. A part of him wanted to tell her that he only wanted to be friends but despite all of her bad points and there was a lot he still had a bit of a soft spot for her. It wasn't like what he felt for Leah but he and Taylor had a history and he didn't have the heart to tell her he only wanted to be friends.

In fact he wasn't sure what he wanted. It was stupid to not go out with someone just based on the small chance he and Leah might start a new relationship. They were just trying to become friends once more and she was seeing someone and he knew she didn't expect him to just not go out with anyone. Though he could never see himself in a serious relationship with Taylor she was fine to be around that was for sure. That night he spent the night at her apartment once more. She invited him to go with her to the beach the upcoming weekend. He halfway considered it but declined saying that he needed to finish setting things up here. She pouted but was fine with it as it was such short notice.

"I promise I will make up for lost time when I get home. Just one so you know I'm not going to the beach this weekend to hook up with anyone alright."

Dan got the hint that she was considering the two of them somewhat of an item without just saying we are dating. Though honestly he almost preferred if she wouldn't have told him her intentions it was sweet.

"Look I'm not hooking up with anyone either in fact I will basically be stuck in my apartment setting it up or in the apartment office taking care of some business."

Saturday morning Dan went for breakfast and a quick workout at the local gym and answered about 20 texts from Taylor. She had sent him tons of pictures mostly of her in some provocative pose in her swimsuit and then topless then totally naked.

After the work out he had come home showered and ate lunch before falling asleep on the couch. He woke to the sound of his phone chirping signaling a text message. He started not to even look as he figured it was Taylor once more sending him some pic or something but decided to check just in case.

Still up for that coffee? -L He read it a second time shocked as he had figured she wasn't going to take him up on his offer as it had been several days.

He hit the reply button and began typing, I would love to go for coffee where and when?"

Leah was surprised at the quick reply she received to her text. It made her smile a little. She opened it, thinking for a moment, then sent another message.

How about the usual place at 7?

He would know what she meant by that. It was a place they went all the time when they were dating, every morning before class. She debated whether it would be weird or not, or if she should suggest a different place. But she decided that it would be nice to have something familiar to them both.

After receiving his confirmation, she felt strangely nervous about it. It wasn't a date. It was two people, trying to catch up and work on their friendship. That was it. No reason to be nervous.

Then why did it take her so long to decide what she wanted to wear? She wanted to be casual, but not too casual, and not too dressy. It was only coffee. It was only Dan. She kept telling herself that as she got ready to go.

She finally decided on a simple lavender sundress and flats. It was her style without looking too date-y. She left her place about 630 and arrived at the coffee shop about ten til 7. Dan wasn't there yet so she ordered her coffee and found a spot in the back corner to wait. There was a couch and a small table with another comfortably cushy chair opposite. She took a seat on the couch and waited for Dan.

Dan walked out of the house about to run late as usual. He had gotten tied up on the phone taking care of a small business issue then he had changed clothes twice thinking his first outfit was to dressy.

He finally decided on a pair of jeans that was fairly loose in the legs but fit him a bit snugger around the hips. They weren't tight by any means but fit comfortably and once again women always liked the way he looked in those jeans. He had caught more than one girl watching him from behind.

He slipped on a shirt that was V-neck with three quarter length sleeves and showed off his muscular upper body. He was even larger and more muscular than his high school days and took pride though not vanity in this fact.

Bounding to his vehicle he finally arrived at the coffee shop about five minutes late though he did text Leah and told her he was on his way and would be there in five.

He entered the place and memories came rushing back and he stopped just inside the doorway and inhaled deeply while closing his eyes. He could almost imagine he was back in high school and he and Leah had plans to conquer the world.

Finally, he opened his eyes and headed directly to where he knew that he would find her waiting on him. Sure enough there she was and she looked stunning even though he knew she wasn't in full date mode look.

"Hi sorry I ran late but a last minute business call one of my tenants AC went out and I had to call a maintenance man to go fix the thing. You look wonderful by the way."
