They should have arrived ten minutes ago! Alethi Storm wasn't happy in the least that she was having baby sitters on this expedition. Sure, the money belonged to the university, but what university actually hires thugs to make sure the excavation was a success? They didn't send an army with her when she discovered the missing galleons of Spain carrying tons of doubloons. Nor was she accompanied in retrieving artifacts from the pyramids in Egypt. All of them worth more than their weight in gold. All of them, she took back to safety without armed personnel against raiders and thieves and pirates and syndicates. She and her team could take care of themselves.
It was one artifact. One! And for some reason, she needed a retinue. True there were stories about it really having mystical powers, but what ancient artifact isn't surrounded by curses and magic? The board was just being silly.
Or maybe they weren't. After all, if she did find the relic, it would prove the existence of Atlantis...or something that Atlantis was patterned after. More importantly, it would contain so much information about the culture of that forgotten place. Find of the century indeed!
If she was successful, she would validate her sacrifices in her life. She could laugh in the faces of those who ridiculed her and called her a dork and bullied her. Given, none of them even recognized her anymore. After chucking her thick glasses and opting for lasik, her younger sister gave her a wardrobe overall and a makeup tutorial. Not that she used makeup often. Not in her job description at least. And goodness knows she barely had time to put on makeup during classes. At least her hair didn't need any maintenance. She could go all day without brushing and she'd still look like she went to the salon. But of course, her job required her to use a pony-tail, opting to tie it high up her head, rather than all loose at the nape of her neck when she was in college.
"They're here."
Alethi looked up and saw their plane finally touching down the runway. She stood in the hangar arms crossed, her foot tapping. Whoever was in charge was going to get an earful. They were going to lose precious daylight late as they were.
The plane finally docked in the hangar and she stalked toward the hatch. The words were ready in her head, but as soon as the first man stepped out, the words died in her mouth. She prayed to whatever god was listening that he wouldn't recognize her. No. Of course, he wouldn't. She changed so much. The same name could be a coincidence. Or, he could forget about her altogether. After all, she was the unremarkable, forgettable dork sitting near the trash bins.
Alethi hoped she was that forgettable.
