Socialism means that there's shared means of production and cooperative management of the economy between the private and public sectors. It doesn't mean that people don't participate in the economy or that there isn't an economy.

The real problem for socialists is that one or another flavour of socialism has been committing mass murder on this planet since the Bolshevik revolution right down to this day.

We can argue the numbers but between Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot, about 100,000,000 poor souls were liquidated in the search for the perfect socialist utopia. Some say the number of deaths due to socialism is closer to 200,000,000.

Socialism has murdered, starved and tortured more people than any other faith in the history of human existence.

(Notice that I didn't even bother include the murders by that famous German National Socialist of the mid-20th century.)

Even today, socialist derived green philosophies in polite modern civil societies are expressing their socialist fantasies about mass murdering their political opponents.

It's not socialists who are idiots that want to kill anyone who disagrees with them, it's humans who are idiots who want to kill anyone who disagrees with them. History, from ancient to modern, is full of such shit. Socialism as a philosophy is not about hate or violence; almost no philosophies are. But it's all but impossible to find any philosophy where some group of its followers weren't murderers, because almost none of them are about pacifistic non-violence either. Humans, and not just humans but the most closely-related primate species, have the instinct to get angry from several factors, but especially at those who don't fit in and those who have something to be jealous of, and try to kill whoever is making them angry. Half the reason any kind of government exists is because one thing we pretty much all agree on is that it's unacceptable for others to try to kill us.
 
Neither socialism or capitalism will ever be successful because the true ideologies get twisted by human self interest. Those with the lack of compassion required to trample their way into power will be exactly the type of people to twist the ideology to benefit themselves.
 
I am a socialist because I do not possess, (without labour or trouble), well-furnished palaces with vast sums of money and elegant carriages.

That's nice but most people here who support socialism do it in the context of backing a defined number of socialist policies within democracy and a wider capitalism. Nobody here is talking about Stalinist communism in the least bit so when you call Stalinism bad you're just declaring victory because you roundhouse kicked a straw man.
