THE RARE COIN SCORE by Donald Westlake.

Parker and his crew plan to rob a coin show of its stock. Parker figures its an easy half million dollars after the coins are fenced.

This novel introduces Parker's hot babe, Claire. Claire and Parker will be a pair till Westlake dies 30 years in the future. But the affair starts badly. Parker is an asshole.

This novel is highly rated by readers, I was bored. Its all formula composition, and once you've read 6 or 8 Parker books you know whats gonna happen. Its entertaining but not clever or surprising. Parker will get some strange pussy from some gal who exists to put out and vanish from the book. Her name is Mavis in this book. And she's fat. But she wants it. The Parker books always feature a serious treachery, this one has one.

3 starz because the chapters are short.

Did they make a movie of that, it sounds familiar?

It's a shame when a good writer starts getting in a rut. When I was in my twenties I read every Alistair MacLean book I could find. Going back to them ten years later I saw that he had a formula for many of them, and while they were still good reads, some of the fun left. I'd noticed the same thing in my teens when I was reading Edgar Rice Burroughs.

As for Weslake I've only read a few of his books, and none of the Parkers (that I remember.) I still have the hardback I got in a 2nd hand store of "High Adventure". Recently I finished Kahawa. both good reads. Or did I say that somewhere else?

Maybe there is only a limited number of plots.

Lovecraft always followed a pattern with his mythos stories. To the point they make games of it now.

Pick a narrator-investigator, relative...friend....and usually discussing someone who vanished.

Pick an evil tome...Necronomicon, Cultes des Ghouls....the book of the worm...

Pick a great old one, Cthulhu, Azatoth, Shub Niggurath

and it ends with...death, vanishing, insanity....

Most of Sidney's works are female centric.

If Tomorrow Comes has Tracy Whitney, who has almost everything, go to jail for a crime she didn't commit. She's raped and the child she's carrying is dead from the beating she gets.

Months later, she comes out a woman with hardened guts. Exacts revenge on the mafia who sent her inside.

Long story short, after prison no one gives her a respectable job she deserves, so she cons rich people and steals artefacts. Liked Book One and Book Two.

Dunno about Book Three.

I'll see if the library has a copy.

If you tossed in she severed their balls and made them eat them before they died, it could be something I'd write myself.

Its funny how movies and books(most) portray the mafioso as being so bad ass, you really can't find a bigger group of cowards.
