:nana: Let's have another day of celebrating! :nana:

It might not be nits... cos I changed my volumising spray recently, and sometimes I get sensitive skin. I also know there's a kid I teach whose head is crawling... which is probably what's making me paranoid.

And do you know what the worst thing is?

a) They no longer have the nit nurse coming round schools.
b) If a kid has nits, there's no way the school can make the parents do something about it, or stop the kid from coming to school. So if you get parents who don't give a damn, it turns into a headlice epidemic.

I'm gong to have to get my mother to check for me... The shame...

Is hedrin hard on your scalp?

Use conditioner and fine toothed comb. Then use a strong tea-tree solution (mix it into a base oil - ordinary sunflower oil would do) and leave it on for a while, then wash as normal. If neither of these work then get one of those electric zappy combs thingies.

Last time I had nits (t'was a while ago, admittedly) I used that chemical stuff and it ruined my hair for years. All dull and brittle until it grew out.

just an FYI.

paranoid thoughts of the day... no, week: My dissertation is a pile of crap and there is no way in hell I'm gonna get a decent mark. ever ever ever.

Damn, now you've made my head itch.
Add half a dozen drops of tea tree oil to your standard conditioner - little buggers hate the smell.

Only if you leave it in the bottle :p

Thank you for all the advice, everyone.

There's good news, though - the random paranoid thought has been shattered

One of my friends came over, and he went through my hair with the nit comb over white paper. Nothing jumped out, and there's no signs of any recent nit-activity. I trust his judgement, because he's gay. And gay guys always have an eye for detail :)

I've decided the itching was the result of:
a) Changing my conditioner and volumising spray both at once, and using too much of them.
b) Knowing that at least one of my charges is crawling with nits.

All clear with the random paranoid thoughts at the moment ;)

Good news :nana:

But could you please explain why my head began itching the moment I picked up on this thread ?

You think that might be the problem ?

*nods*

I do that every time the school sends a notice home that someone in one of the kids' classes has been diagnosed.

They never send "all clear" notices, either.

You see, we don't get any announcements like that over here. It sucks. You just kind of hear through the grapevine which kids are crawling with them. The worst was when one of them was diagnosed with scabies... :( That can be transmitted through furniture and clothing. I was coming home at the end of every day, shoving my clothes in the washing machine and scrubbing myself with disinfectant

I don't even get danger money for it...

we get notices all the time.

at least once a week theres a kid with nits.

its a way of life to wash the kids hair and comb it out at least twice a week just for in case

dont even think about it any more. if they're little and they go to school, they're gonna get it. nothing u can do about it

That's not fair! Why do I have to live in the one area where it's all kept secret

I'm big and I go to school... but I really don't want to get it...

Don't know if this is true or not, just something I've heard, but lice are not supposed to like the smell of coconut either. Perhaps combining the tea tree oil with a coconut scented conditioner could work.

I hate nits! Hate them, hate them, hate them. I have two daughters with long hair, and check constantly.

Now I'm itching, too!

Our town is called a "Well Head" town, because our school nurse keeps an eye on nits/lice and if a child has live bugs they are not allowed to come to school. They can come if the egg sacs are there, but not the bugs.

My kids have had it. It SUCKS!

My daughter had to postpone Summer Camp one year, and we ended up buying an electric comb for her and WOW that works! We combed her hair three times a day for a week, then two times a day for a week, the once, and then after that twice a month. When she came down with it again, we repeated all that.

On top of all this we washed everything and sprayed the furniture, the bedding, shaved my son's hair. They had laid eggs in his short hair, but had deserted him afterwards, because his hair was already to short for live bugs to hide in.

These things are a menance! I learned more than I ever wanted to learn about them!

I've never had them. It took me sometime to realize that the reason that was happened to be because I never stayed overnight at friends houses very often. While growing up I probably stayed at someone else's house a total of 10 times.

My kids have spent the night at friends' houses dozens upon dozens of times. It doesn't have to be at school where they catch it. It only takes one, and they can lay up to 200 eggs before they die!
