Hey guys,

We have a couple of Queenslanders on here so I thought I'd start this thread as our state here in Australia is slowly but surely going underwater.

As of today, suburbs surrounding mine have been evacuated, about two thirds of our state is a disaster zone and one woman was swept into the waters yesterday, she died sadly.

Several people are missing and others have been separated from their families. While my suburb is safe because we're on high ground, we may end up isolated from everything else.

Our Brisbane river is about to break its banks when the dam reach 220% capacity because they have to let the water go, the Bremer river will also flood and is at 17 metres of water in Ipswich currently.

Toowoomba has been cut in half by the flooding. Please keep us all informed fellow Queenslanders, we all got paranoid and stocked up on food yesterday lol!

SO...does anyone want some water? :D We'll share, you can take it!

Share your stories and let us know what it's like in your region please.

Kinda makes you miss the whole drought thing we had going.

Doesn't it though?!

And have you noticed, we have so much water that we're going under it and STILL the price of taking a shower hasn't taken a nose dive, it's as expensive as ever!

Okay wow, did anyone else get a text message not too long ago?

If you didn't, this is what mine says:

Flash Flood Warning - Brisbane River to reach 18-19 metres, Wednesday AM. Residents close to River or associated tributaries monitor site overnight & evacuate if required.

If you want to keep up to date with radar, go to www.bom.gov.au
They have great readings there along with warnings for each state, just click QLD for warnings or radar for the radar.

They're still selling sandbags out at Morningside and Darra so look into that, pretty big queues though apparently.

Call SES (State Emergency Services) 132 500 - pretty sure that's the correct number as of October 1st, 2010, if you need them.

Also, this is in from the Courier Mail as of two hours ago:

Spills to increase from straining Wivenhoe Dam, which is at 175 per cent of capacity

WATER managers are ramping up flood releases as Wivenhoe Dam upstream of the city reaches 175 per cent and is rising.

The releases will push up the already heavily flooded Brisbane River, threatening city suburbs.

Heavy rain in the Stanley River upstream of Somerset Dam and in the Brisbane Valley above Wivenhoe has produced enormous inflows.

Somerset Dam is at 160 per cent and releasing water into Wivenhoe, which is dispersing water into the Brisbane River

About 236,000 ML a day is being released but this will increase later today to ensure the dam remains safe.

As a result of Lockyer Creek floods and Wivenhoe releases, Twin Bridges, Savages Crossing, Burtons Bridge, Kholo Bridge Colleges Crossing, Fernvale Bridge, and Mt Crosby Weir Bridge may be inundated until Sunday.

Somerset is expected to keep rising and Kilcoy residents are being warned of flooding.

Five gates are open at North Pine Dam, north of Brisbane, releasing about 15,000 ML a day and will continue until at least tomorrow.

Leslie Harrison Dam in Redland city also is releasing water.

A minor release of around 1200 ML day is being made at Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast.

Water Grid spokesperson Dan Spiller said vital water infrastructure in the upper Somerset towns of Kilcoy, Jimna and Linville had been damaged and residents were being urged to conserve water.

``We have a limited supply in local reservoirs that is expected to last one to three days,'' Mr Spiller said.

``Power is currently down at the main water treatment plant in Kilcoy, with flood water restricting access to rectify the situation.''

In Jimna and Linville rising waters have impacted infrastructure that supports the region's supply.

Staff are working with Emergency Management Queensland in attempts to gain access to the plants and make repairs.

~ II ~

Be aware that when Wivenhoe dam reaches 220% capacity, they are forced to open the gates completely and release a helluva lot of water into the Brisbane River so when that happens, the city will likely go under.

For Ipswich Residents, they've set up an Evacuation Centre at the Ipswich Show Grounds so head there if need be. (I know cause I'll be working Traffic Control around there for the next week >.< )

Share your information guys!

Wow. I hope this is all over for you guys soon. Stay safe Minx, don't do anything too stupid!

starts an elaborate rain dance to try and draw water away from Oz and over to Blighty

That's what you get for living on a glorified penal colony and speaking that ridiculous dialect of botched english.

I'm kidding. Stay safe.

*Giggles*

Oh trust me, I won't have the time to do anything stupid, I just got told that we're not only stuck with the council but also SES crews for the next few weeks so we'll be bored at road closures instead of at home >.<

Fuck my car, does anyone have a boat I can borrow?!

Oh yeah, heard from my girlfriend at Leichhardt today and she's trapped, the bridge to her place is underwater so she can't even get to the shops.

I asked her if she still has that inflatable pool for the kids cause she might need it now!

Funny's from Facebook include:

Been invited to an event? My sister has; Canoeing in the Queen Street Mall, BYO Paddle! :D

Flood drinking games! drink every time you hear someone say deluge, inundated, 1974 or cut off on tv.... aanddd BREAK!

It's fine people, I have my floaties!

Q: So is it ok to start having really long showers and not be charged for it?

A: Only if you stand outside!

Just gave some ipswich kids a bath in the gutter :)

Status: Little paranoid. Stocking up on food and the important things.

Comment: Stock up for us to pleasee were stressing hahaha woolies is closed

Comment 2: Bring all that shit over here immediately!

My comment: Important? So alcohol right?
Share!! ♥

That's all Queensland needs, a drunk traffic controller waving her arms around wildly at a waterlogged intersection, dressed to distract as many motorists as possible!

I  you

Ahahaha! You left out the beer in my right hand :p

Firstly, thank you Minxy for the updates. My entire family are trapped up there atm, my sister evacuated and things are looking to get a hell of a lot worse. Your updates are far more informative and reliable then the news we are getting from VIC, so thank you so much. I can't tell you how much hell I am in watching this happen to my family and friends, so your information is keeping me updated and calmer. Thank you so much *hugs*

Secondly, I realise LI that your response is a joke and intended as such. But I will kindly ask that you refrain from such comments until after the seriousness of the floods settle down? Please? I took offense to it despite knowing it was humor. No one deserves what is happening to QLD and Brisbane atm, and your statement implied as such. I am sorry if this is coming off as too prudish and I know it is humor...but perhaps it was a little ill-timed. Sorry again.

Sorry and thank you again Minx. My prayers are with you all atm.

Drought then flood?
Are you sure your continent isn't a testing ground for the apocalypse?

I heard about this today and meant to pop in as soon as I could and check on you, minxy, glad to hear you are OK, and keep us up to date

Our continent is the testing ground for a lot of environmental stuff. Like - Monotremes.

But it has only taken 2 years for one dam to go from 17% capacity to 173% capacity.

But, I hope everyone else are taking notes on how to deal with the apocalypse test runs were doing here. No bitching and complaining when it hits the rest of the place. OK :)

Plus, we have blue sky in Brisbane at time of posting. It wont do us much good, but it wont make things worse, which is just as important.

You're welcome Shy, if you tell me what suburb your sister was in then I might be able to help you a little more with where she is now and how you can contact her.

I'm okay Vail, getting geared up to help out :)

Here's what my town looks like right now:

NOT THE PUB!!!

Yeah but are you ready for 'devastating' tomorrow?

Our town got worse overnight, they must have released a ton of water from Wivenhoe but we're all under now!
Thank god for being on a hill!

How is it looking on your side M?

I heard Milton copped it, my section of the Ipswich Motorway has gone under so I can't take dad to the hospital now either!

And correction:

Wivenhoe Dam is now 190% capacity, trains are only running hourly and you won't be getting one through to Ipswich because we've gone under!

Hopefully, this is helpful to you Shy and other Queenslanders and Australians alike.

Hope you guys following this are staying safe-and don't lose power, either. Aside from how boring it would be to have nothing to do except watch the water rise and fall, being unable to follow news is rather stressful.

It flooded here last year, but nothing nearly so devastating as this since I don't live particularly near a river. That also came following a pretty devastating drought-I suppose that's how it works.

Stay safe, minx.

You can't drown or suffocate Minx. A lot of men have tried and failed.

And Leo keeps trying! :D

On a sadder note:

:( My best mate just told me he's being evacuated from Corinda. :(

A few mates have told me: Milton is under, Cooparoo is under, Bundamba is under, Ipswich is under, Riverview is under and old Ipswich road is completely cut in half, no access. Also none through the main drag of Bundamba because it's under and the road is blocked.

I think I'm officially isolated because two out of three known exits to my town are underwater, I haven't checked out the third but it's probably gone too.

Best wishes for the third one staying open.

Is it true that you aren't allowed to use boats in the streets etc at the moment?

Thanks Noon, I'm doing my best, believe me >.>

We're not allowed to due to debree in the water, contaminants, sharks and crocs. We're supposed to stay clear of it as much as possible and we're not supposed to travel unless we absolutely have to.

Only SES is allowed to use boats to bring people to safety.

I think that one is waterlogged too no doubt so I am officially stuck >.<

Croc's and sharks...yeah, much worse than if Victoria happened to flood out as bad as Queensland is at the moment.

Well apparently they found a massive croc in Gympie, well out of its territory so apparently they're travelling downstream in the water. Of course, the Brisbane river is home to more than 4000 bull sharks so it's likely that we'll see some further down.
