"Its too cold..."
Ember's voice was barely a whimper as she hugged her knees, looking up to the others with a frown. She always felt cold anymore. The scientists had always made her room feel so warm- she guessed it to keep her under control. Her body had gotten so used to that heat, though, that even the mid 60's outside felt like ice to her.

"Jeezus, Em, then make a damn fire. Its not like its that hard for you," One of the others snapped, only making her pout a bit more. She hated to be yelled at.

Staring at one of the cardboard boxes across the way, she bit down on her lip and willed the combustion, only to give a soft yelp as it finally happened. Causing the flames seemed to hurt a part of her deep inside. Did it have something to do with all those tests? What had happened back in that lab? And what the hell had they done to Hendrik? The pain inside grew even more as she thought about him. She missed him so much.. He had been like a brother to her, protected her when she was most frightened, taught her the most about her power and how to control it to her will, not its own.

"We should get going," She finally said flatly, getting to her feet and dusting off her skirt. "Its only a matter of time that someone will leak out they've seen us. We don't exactly blend in to the locals very well." The meekness of her voice was gone, replaced with a sudden strength from the memory of Hendrik. She would at least try to be strong... even if it was nothing more than an act for now.

he banged on the door sending a charge through the old wires knocking out any power "freak squad come out and put on these coughs i have a nice warm bed waiting" he mocks "and i may even climb into it with some of you" he slamns his shoulder into the door it gives a little he hopes they are in the mood for a fight. "you cant win" he says as the door breaks sliding open he spies one of them.

All the noise wakes up Amara. First some one shouting - "...not like its that hard for you", and now this banging door.

She wakes up and is a bit disoriented.

"What the hell is going on?"

Nick began to piece together his equipment as it came in. The perfectly made hotel room bed held several boxes, some UPS some from other no name companies. They had been torn apart, and inside several wonderful goodies came out.

"Non lethal," He sighed to himself, looking at what had been given to him. Millions of dollars in testing equipment, but not a damn thing that could kill a man. All of it nice and calm, even them folks at PETA wouldn't have a problem using them on local animals.

The cute kinds, one that go on the endangered species list, not the dull slobbery gross kind which no one cares about. The kind that go into little school children's lunches each day at school.

Eat up hearty little ones, after all, you are the future.

Tranq guns, some with scopes. He could pin down a gnat from two hundred yards away if he wanted too. And he just might, some of these people would spot him coming a mile away. Heightened senses to see him, smell him, think him coming. He had become the boogeyman in their dreams, the dark scary shadow hiding in their closet, eager to come out as soon as mommy and daddy turned off the lights.

Nick loaded them up.

A sonic bomb, nothing more than a shock gernade using a sonic frequency that could knock out everyone in a grocery store if put in the right place. Concussion and harmonic frequency. They just finished testing this little device on bamboons.

Poor little guys.

He had several meters, hooking up to GPS systems tracking the city nonstop. The instruments themselves were keyed into several sensors, barometric pressure, heat, cold, condensation, anything and everything that could be tested. Any spike on the map would show him something out of the ordinary going on.

Local police and civilian bands of communication were being monitored through his agency. His agency had no name, no monogram, no series of letters to diviniate him from other such groups. They were off the record, they were ghosts in the machine, only their deeds were known, not the people behind them.

And there he was, sitting in a hotel room, armed to the teeth with the latest in weaponry... waiting and hoping one of them would make a mistake.

They had before. That is why he was here now. They had put the lost children over on the south side of town, somewhere. At least in the last few days they were here.

He was going to go dumpster diving as soon as the light faded. They didn't like to attract attention, so they mostly stayed to the streets, alleys and underground places. Homeless people would often spot them, but not care. They're homeless, why would they?

Still, if he could find a few eye witness accounts, maybe he could bag and tag a little munchkin before dawn broke.

Ember glanced up a moment and raised her hand. Last she had known, this building was abandoned... and now the shouts fom upstairs were getting loud. Shit- The loudmouth who had yelled at her had alerted someone as to where they were. She just hoped the others staying in the room above would be alright.

"We can't risk everyone going up there," She said softly, glancing around quickly. "Whoever feels strong enough to go help, go right ahead... but the most I can do is cause a fire down here and wait for it to spread." She glanced over to two younger kids, though barely a year less than her. Some of them were so medicated still that they could barely talk straight, let alone stand.. trying to focus any of their powers would be impossible. "I need someone to help me with these guys. We gotta get out of here."

Hoisting the younger girl's arm up onto her own shoulder, she started towards the door, pausing long enough to look back towards the far right wall. She had heard the soft gas leak earlier in the night; a grave warning to her to be careful on how much spark she let loose. Now though, it was looking more like a blessing, even if it did alert even more hunting them as to their location. At least she could do something to help upstairs. "Cover your ear," She whispered to the younger girl, concentrating on the drywall until it ignited. "Make your decisions quick, guys- You don't have much time!"

Amara shrugged off the sleepiness. She can smell danger now, and the sleepiness is all gone. It is replaced by a desire to fight, desire to live a free life.

She looks at Ember. "Em, you start a fire, and have someone help you out down here. I will go check this trouble out, and try to fight it best I can."

With that, she rushes up towards the trouble upstairs. She proceeds cautiously upstairs to the additional rooms that the fleeing group had till now.

"what's going on here, and where is that noise coming from?"

he walks into the room holding his shirt over his mouth "surender or die" he says pulling out a non letal dart gun that looks like a standard 9mm with a silencer. "i am not in a good mood"

Amara concentrates and with her telekinetic power, pulls the dart-gun out of his hand. She does not tire in here telekinetic powers too much in just pulling the dart-gun out of his hand as its a small object. She looks at him and calls out loud

"What do you think you are doing? Why dont you realize that you are fighting from the wrong side. We grew up with you. We have faced the same tortures. We want to live a free life. Join us. Be on the right side. This is not a battle for good or evil. This is a battle for freedom, and that is one battle you want to pick the right side on"

true they were raised together but on opposite sides of the wall he was a guards son. "no i was not good enough i needed machines in my body" he spits out he resents them the naturals a sick and twisted way he is jealous of them "if i dont take you in my father will never be proud of me" shooting out lightening the gun explodes shooting darts in every direction.

Using a lot of her telekinetic power, she picks up the study table in the room. She brings it up between herself and the dart spray to block all the darts. "One touch and I might be knocked out" she tells herself. In one fluid motion, the table now having blocked the darts is flying towards her adversary to knock him off ground.

"Anyone around. Help me fight him off!"

he shatters the table turning it into kindling "we should leave before this place burns down truce" he ask his own arm burned he offers his hand then pulls back. "sorry force of habit"

She sees him offer truce. Being a kind person, she accepts the offer. He offers his hand, and she extends hers to shake. Suddenly she sees him pull his hand back and realizes danger. She pulls her hand back too, and is now angry. She uses most of her remaining telekinetic enery, and picks up the heavy door and throws it at him.

At the same time, she runs back, and jumps through the fire to the other side. She runs back towards the door that she knew Em would have fled through. As she is about to follow through, her keen senses observe the gas cylinder that caused the leak in the first place. She picks up the gas cylinder from the corner with the last bit of her telekinetic energy, and throws it at the raging fire where she had just come through. " That ought to do it for him" she said as she fled the scene, and the heard the gas cylinder explode. She ran out and saw Em and other kids running down the block and turn the corner. She runs towards them to join them.

a man in a van grabs her as he lowers his shield "you should have taken my offer" he watches her as she is cuffed with special cuffs that supress there power and a collar "now we play 20 questions" he says as they take a shark corner.

"Ember," He voice thick and hollow at the same time, like some large empty shell of a promise. It dripped as he finally could see her. She would be the one he could pick up so easy on his monitors. Everyone else had spikes here and there, depending on how much or little they used their power, but her...

Every spark bigger than a campfire sent up warning bells.

"A lot of people have been worried about you," He spoke, calm and serene througout the incident. People shouting, the burning noting more than a sinking inferno, and the cascade of explosions made everyone's ears have a low droning whine that refused to budge.

"I need you to come back with me, all right? We'll get you someplace warm again. Would you like that?"

He pulled out a gun, slow, steady, no sudden movements to frighten her. There was no fear in Nick's eyes as he walked steadily towards her, even if she could burn the very flesh off of his bones.

He walked towards her with absolute confidence.

"Just come back with me, ok? It's Nick, you remember me? I was there to help you? Don't you remember?"

Marcie had been walking on the bottom floor trying to find peace. While it was never a successful endeavor, she always tried. The voices were babbling, wailing, and talking to love ones long past as usual. She had forgotten her iPod. There was nothing to drown them out. Finally, she folded with frustration.

"Shut up!" she hissed. "You are dead. Acknowledge and move on with it!"

The voices started to call out in recognition of being heard:

"You heard me?"
"Listen, tell them I'm here!"
"What happened to me?"
"Help me..."
"Tell her I'm sorry..."
"That bastard better hope..."
"It hurts..."
"Where am I..."
"It's so dark..."

"Stop IT!"

They silenced with shock. Immediately, she could hear every creak and movement in the old building. Then, the voices of the living upstairs. Someone yelled out indifferent to their hiding. She breathed deeply with waiting, then a menacing man yelled threats through the front door. A loud crack echoed as he kicked at the rotten wood frame.

"Shit," she cursed.

"He's armed," a male voice called.
"Are you bad?" a childlike voice cried.

"Shhh" she held her finger to her mouth. "I need to warn the others." Her blue eyes widen with fear as her pupils searched the ceiling. Wiping her face, she looked back seeing the first split spread through the door.

"They already know," the man answered. "Get out!"
"The sad one is going to make a boom," another young female voice announced excitedly.
"Go to the back," a motherly one called.

"Can you help us?" she pleaded. "Make it hard for him while the little ones escape. I promise to help you."

"I will"
"Yes"
"I'm scared"

"It will be okay," she reassured them.

"Just GO!"

She couldn't leave her people. So, she went running up the steps away from safety. Reaching the top, she saw Ember silhouetted with the glow of fiery destruction. The crowd of project kids followed her like Joan of Arc. Marcie tired to concentrate on the rescue, but the voices were so loud. They taunted the living attacker even if he could not hear them. However, the sound of flying rocks, wood and debris was a sign he knew they were there. The dead were making an assault. Pointing to the back of the building, she touched the passing crowd sending them the right direction. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. Coming up the back, she followed them as they moved toward the back. Seeing something from the corner of her eye, she saw a girl run the wrong way toward trouble.

"Ember," she whispered loudly. "What is Amara doing?"

As Amara ran ou of the building, she could hear the xplosion go off. Unfortunately for her, the explosion was much bigger than she expected and splinters flew around, some finding her. She fell down, and got up. She had taken quite some damage from the explosion. She was bleeding, was covered in soot and dust. She had cuts in her knee where she had hit the ground. Her left arm was bleeding as well. A hand grasped her as she got up, and handcuffed her. She know instantanously that this would cut her super-powers out of the picture, and she would have to fight through this.

"Let go of me. Gget your hands off me. HELP!" She shouted. As she heard her rival call out "now we play 20 questions", and she looks at him in a puzzled manner. "What do you want?"

he sits indian style in front of her "i want to know all about are old friends" he says she looks so sexy cuffed he leans forward giving her a kiss on the cheek. "so what can you tell me you know you were always my favorite" he tells her offering her a bottle of water. he sits up the kneels he smiles he is happy to see one of his old friends.

He leans forward and kisses her on the cheek. She hates him and spits at him in the face.
"Friends, huh! You are no friend. You just showed that. I was even ready for peace with you in there, and you pulled your hand back. You can go to hell!"

She is struggling agaist her captor, but doesnt get much as he is very alert. She gives up for a while then and relaxes back again.

he almost hits her "you fool if i had shook youre hand i would have schock you" his hands the source of his power but also his sin he slowly pulls on some plastic gloves. "i can hold in my power like you im a juiced up cyborg to much contact and you might have died" ghe turns not feeling like he should explain himself more.

As he shouted at her, she suddenly realized her error. She looked at him and said

"If you are telling the truth, and I really misunderstood things, I am sorry. Do you want to switch sides? Lets get rid of this guy here?"

he leans closer to her ear "I can't i need them you know for my metal parts" he leans back to the wall of the van "now just tell me what i want to know freak so we can gather up all youre friends"

She was beginning to feel desperate. "Come with us. We will fight together against them. and get you your metal parts as well."

Ice sighed lightly as he made his way towards the warehouse the other children were staying at. It was a pit stop of a sorts to hold off until they could move on again. Hopefully to a place far enouph away were they wouldn't run into anymore goverment agents and maybe just maybe live a normal happy life.

At least that's what Hendrik had wanted.

Ice himself didn't know if that was possible, he had his doubts but those were the wishes fo the late Hendrik who had met an unfortinute end 6 months ago within the research facility. He didn't know exactly how he had died but from what he could gather from the others it wasn't pretty.

It was Hendrik who out of all the children at the reasearch facility seemed to understand them all, even ice who dispite his cold hearted nature couldn't come to dislike the man. It was just something about him that made everyone feel calm and peaceful around him, like an older brother of a sorts with wishful thinking and dreams of living a normal life.

"pfft a normal life...as if that's possible" Ice said to himself coldly while carrying a few bags of food with him. The other children had sent him out on an errion to collect food for them to eat. They had managed to get the money through mostly begging and small petty theifs that only ice would commit without telling the others. How else were they going to survive in a world that wouldn't accept them for who they were and even hunted them in some cases.

Ice then stoped suddenly as he felt something in the air....psy energy..
Something was about to happen and sure enouph the moment he thought about it the ware house the other kids were staying at exploded in a burst of flames that sent peices of debree everywhere.

Ice gritted his teeth and took off running the bags of food dropped and forgotten as it was obvious the other chidren were in danger. It wasn't that he cared for them, it was just they were the only other ones like him and could even possibly understand him and his curse.

Ice came up to the burning building and glanced over to his right and saw Amara just as a hand wraped around her mouth and pulled her into the back of a van.

"Shit.." Ice said running towards the van then, he didn't see any of the others and somewhere deep within his cold heart he hoped they were okay, but for now he had to save Amara.

Raiseing his hands the first thing Ice did was freeze the wheels as a blue and white beam shot from his hands and completly encased the wheels in a block of soild ice. He then moved to the back of the van and did the same to the door freezing it completly before doing a round house kick that completly shattered the doors apart and reveeled Amara and another man who was also giving a certin aura of psy energy. Not wasteing any time he shot a beam of ice at the handcuffs freezing the handcuffs and makeing them brittle to the point he knew Amara could break free of with ease. He then looked to the other man with a freezing glare in his eye.

"...come on out Amara...and you remain there..." he said in a low icy tone that only had the promise of death if he tried anything.

he shook his head "how long would i have" he says sliding the divinding door "a week a month two" he looks at her he takes of the cuffs her power still supressed by the collar.

Amara was thankful to see Ice there. She saw the van veer to a halt, and her chains freeze up and get brittle. She broke the chains and ran out. Her Telekinetic power now free, and raging she lifted the van about 50 ft. high up in the air and left it to fall. She gabbed Ice in the meantime, and ran with him towards the corner she had seen her other friends run.

"Thanks Ice", she muttered as they ran along and turned around the cormer to disappear. As they got out of sight she stopped and asked him. "Fight or run? I say run"
