As an author, what do you feel would be a reasonable rate for lets say 1,000 words of your porn? Would you charge a flat rate, or per word, and would the price difference between exclusive and custom be of difference to you?

Yes, I don't do it anymore, but I used to.

I can't even remember what I charged now! I'll look it up, in my files somewhere and get back to you.

I do advertise on ebay and twice have sold stories that way, one was around 5000 words and another 2500.

I think my adverts on ebay are about £15 for 2,500 words. I have to watch my wording though, I can't out and out say i write porn *L*

I know what to charge for newspaper and magazine articles, which depend on circulation, ads etc. but there are generally usage rights for your work, and so you can resell after that period, as long as the content is timely.

I notice, researching just now, that anthologies do not pay a lot. Custom work can always be resold, so I imagine it would be cheaper. Exclusive usage is interesting, since you cannot resell that story, so should the price be greater, even though there would be more work involved in custom stories?

I advertised myself on my site, and I do believe I marketed myself and my writing well. Word spread, through various means, and I got quite a lot of work. So much, in fact, I couldn't keep up. Hence me finally chucking it in. Also, because it was exclusive stuff, I couldn't ever get the stories published anywhere, so it wasn't advancing my "career" as a writer.

PayPal, cheques/postal orders. But, I used someone else's address for the cheque and postal orders to be sent to (my brother's), because I was a bit wary of giving out my own address over the 'net. He suggested that, btw, I didn't just give out his address without asking him.

I guess I should ay my stuff is exclusive too, unless the person gives me permission to post it on my siteor here I don't post or show it to anyone but the peerson who bought it.

I can't rely on the money from stories, I get the odd extra 20/30 quid every now and then so for me it's no where near a part time job. thoughit'd be nice if it was*L*

When I come across sites where I think I could get more work, I generally write them a query. In this case, the opportunity came up from one of these letters. The site owner asked for a sample, and is now asking for a price re: exclusive rights.

Having worked in a variety of artistic arenas, usage is always of particular significance to me. Exclusive means I can't make any more than that, ever, and so the price must reflect the purchase. Porn, unlike a fashion article for example, will always be timely, and yet I can make upwards of $300 for a 700 word article from a daily, or $85 from a weekly publication. Usually, they ask for 3 - 6 months exclusive, after which time I can re-sell, though such an article is useless at that time anyhow. Not all articles are however. Travel pieces can be sold and re-sold and film reviews can be syndicated.

But porn? Well, it can be re-sold forever as long as you find a buyer, so exclusive? You can sell a story to a magazine, and then re-sell it to an anthology, so, in effect you can make, let's just estimate a total of $400 (thinking half-decent, but not creme de la creme publications). After that, you might not sell it anywhere else, but that's ok. So, exclusive, without making additional money? Hm. It is interesting.

As for custom, I would, being as I am, give two prices: exclusive custom and non-exclusive (after a period of one year, and if sold to a publication, dedicated to the name of your choice ) But, that's me, and since I could care less whether I get custom work, it does not affect me to lose any clients.
