The Poets and the Survivor Literotica Contest

"Uh? What do poets and the Survivor Literotica Contest have in common?" some of you might ask. "And what the hell is the Survivor Literotica Contest?" the rest may be wondering.

Let me start with the latter. The short way of putting it is by saying that the Survivor Contest is a game where you get points for each new story or poem you write, submit and have accepted at Literotica between January 2nd, 2005 and January 1st, 2006.

To many of us poets, it's nothing but a nuisance, having the new poetry list flooded with 30 or 40 (many times substandard) poems by the same author in one day. But the reality is that this year's edition of Survivor can be very different.

First, as has been announced here a few weeks ago, our very own Jim (jthserra) won the 2004 Contest, and demonstrated that it is indeed possible for a poet to compete and maintain the very high quality he got us used to in his poetry. :D

Second, and for the first time, the Survivor Literotica Contest is going to be administered and moderated in 2005 by two poets, Jim and myself. :D

Third, and this is when you should really be paying attention, because this year the prizes will be the greatest ever and will extend at least to the top 15 contestants.

"So? What's in it for us?"

Well, many of you already posted enough poems during these first 3 weeks of the year to jump to the top 5 automatically the minute you sign up!

Even if you write only poems and don't venture into story-land ever, at a rate of one poem a week, you can still get up to 68 points by the end of the year, which can in average extend to about 85-90 points with the weekly immunity draw. With those 90 points, you would have ended up in a very respectable 10th place, last year, still way within the top 15 and the prizes! Add to it a couple of stories or articles, and you can do even better.

Seriously, now:

More important than all that, I think it can be something fun just to participate in, to show Laurel and Manu that we, the poets, are proud to be a part of the site. And maybe we can show the rest of the contestants that it's OK to write good poetry even in a contest that is mostly about quantity.

So, if any of you poets wants to join in, with no competitive pressure, feel free to PM me or Jim, or just check the Survivor rules and registration here.

:)

You don't have to write stories?

ever? just poems?

;) The Survivor Literotica Contest isn't what I thought it was if you're saying we could just post poems.

Thanks for the info. I may jump in.

So tell me Laurenita. I can just write poems and theoretically win something, just with poems?

Oh. Neo just asked this. lol.

Cause if that's true I'll do it. I can write lots of poems. I can write more than one poem a day. I can write um more than one poem an hour, I'm pretty sure. Just not sustained over many hours.

Ok, I'll do it. Maybe.

:D

Well, the objective of Survivor is to write as many new and original stories/poems in as many different categories listed on the main story index in the course of the year as possible, so I can tell you right now that you're not gonna finish first if you only write poems. :D

As I said before, if you write 40 poems - 10 erotic, 10 non-erotic, 10 illustrated and 10 audio (and you can have another person record your poem) - you can get 68 points. That's the maximum number of points anyone can get from poetry, because there's a 10-poems cap per category.

There's also a weekly immunity draw; if you sign up now, odds are that you'll win, on statistical average, 6 or 7 immunities by the end of the year, and that would bring your total to around 90 points.

Judging by the 2004 final scores, those 90 points should be enough to finish well within the top 15 and win a prize. :D

And don't forget you can also write "How To" articles about poetry or poetic forms, you can write "Essays and Reviews" about your favourite poems and authors, and there's also the non-Erotic section, if you're averse to writing smut. ;)

wow

I might just do this, get me some motivation to write.

I have some stories in me waiting to come out.

okay damn it, I am goin' for it.

:)

I mean all I have to do is edit my passion posts a bit and post them and I am set :)

And it would be nice to see

more than the three line poems many of the contestants post as their poetry entries. It might be interesting to try to post a different form for each entry, start with a good haiku, work to a dodoitsu (a four lined Japanese form), a tanka, a triolet, a roundeau, a sonnet, a villanelle, pantoum, free form, roundeau redoubled, ghazal, and the list goes on...

The math is simple:

Three points for the first entry in a category 3
One point for the next nine in the category 9
A five points bonus for 10 entries/ category 5

That's the seventeen per category. They only allow 10 in each poetry category, but with four poetry categories that totals 68 points.

For each immunity you can complete a prose category and gain 2 points. To win immunities, you simply publicly choose a number and if the number is one of the numbers drawn in the Mersey Lottery (I think that's the name of it) you win. You have a week to declare the category you want to place the immunity in.

During the year I used only one immunity, but my number actually hit probably 5 times... So, if I didn't choose to write any stories and simply took the immunities I could have won 10 points.

Now, you can write a How to: article... and given a lot of the discussions here in the forum, the are a lot of things you can write about. My series of haiku articles all were How To entries. And then I wrote one titled: How to Eat an Oyster

Anyway, for just your first How To: article you gain 3 points.

You can then write a review or essay, I wrote reviews of several books of Erotic poetry, along with some mainstream novels with erotic content. Several contestants wrote essays about some of the silly comments they received on their stories and poetry.

Wait... don't run off shouting it's too complicated... We give you a scorecard that guides you though the scoring. And hey, if those prose writers can figure it out, surely us poet types can easily handle it. : )

Give it a try, it will be nice to see some really strong poetry entries in the survivor contest.

jim : )

okay I guess I should start posting my stuff under one name for a change. I got a bunch up there just rotting away! sigh

The rules didn't look too complicated. ;)

I'll give it a go, just means I have something to do with the dozen outlines and half finished stories that are left lonely on my hard drive.

No ;)

I have CRS and if I don't write a story idea done with a scratch-outline, I lose it.. or think snippets of my ideas are newly thought up stories.

lol

I just tried to think of something clever to no avail...

What is CRS?

some sort of pharmacy?
